Book excerpt: Western culture has been marked by deep divisions between action and contemplation, intervention and passivity, and decisiveness and withdrawal. Conceived as radical opposites, these terms structure the history of religion, philosophy, and political theory, and have left their imprint on the most intimate processes of individual decision-making and geo-political strategies. But, in On Tarrying, Joseph Vogl argues for a third way, a mode of thought that doesn't insist on these divisive either/ors. Neither an active refusal to engage with the world nor a consistent strategy of resistance, tarrying, as defined by Vogl, defers, multiplies, and suspends the strictures of decision-making. In his far-ranging reflections Vogl shows that the traditional insistence on the exclusivity of these terms impoverishes and distorts the range of human responses to a world full of possibilities. His readings of texts by Freud, Sophocles, Friedrich Schiller, Robert Musil, and Franz Kafka provide rich examples of how to resist the binary of activity and passivity through tarrying. This important book offers the first-ever extended analysis of tarrying as a mode of subversion and presents provocative new readings and interpretations of significant works of German literature and thought.

Book Making a Global Immigrant Neighborhood

Download or read book Making a Global Immigrant Neighborhood written by Tarry Hum and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on more than a decade of research, Making a Global Immigrant Neighborhood charts the evolution of Sunset Park--with a densely concentrated working-poor and racially diverse immigrant population--from the late 1960s to its current status as one of New York City's most vibrant neighborhoods. Tarry Hum shows how processes of globalization, such as shifts in low-wage labor markets and immigration patterns, shaped the neighborhood. She explains why Sunset Park's future now depends on Asian and Latino immigrant collaborations in advancing common interests in community building, civic engagement, entrepreneurialism, and sustainability planning. She shows, too, how residents' responses to urban development policies and projects and the capital represented by local institutions and banks foster community activism. Hum pays close attention to the complex social, political, and spatial dynamics that forge a community and create new models of leadership as well as coalitions. The evolution of Sunset Park so astutely depicted in this book suggests new avenues for studying urban change and community development.

It’s been three years since their breakup, but when Caleb reveals he’s suffering from amnesia after a recent car accident, first she feels regret—and then opportunity. Seeing a chance to reunite with Caleb, she keeps their past, and the details around the implosion of their relationship, a secret. Wrestling to keep her true identity and their sordid history under wraps, Olivia’s greatest obstacle is Caleb’s wicked new girlfriend, Leah, who's equally determined to possess the man who no longer remembers her. But soon Olivia must face the consequences of her lies, and in the process discover that sometimes love falls short of redemption.

Book Tarry Awhile Drawing on the Riches of Black Spirituality for the Whole Church

This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Wonderful' JUSTIN WELBY Tarry here and watch with me . . . (Matt 26.38, KJV) Tarrying is a Black Christian spiritual practice in which believers actively wait to experience the manifestation of God's presence. It answers yes to the question Jesus once asked his disciples: will you tarry here and watch with me? Whether in the vibrancy of music and singing, or in the hushed silence of the congregation, people of all ages anticipate an encounter with God that will transform what they know, feel and experience day to day. This book makes the wisdom of Black spiritualities and faith available for all people. It focuses on seven themes: darkness as a place of encounter with the divine; the unity of all things; movement, belonging and migration; the Spirit as one who moves in unexpected ways; quiet contemplation as essential to spiritual growth; healing in community; and weeping that turns to joy. Tarry Awhile centres the stories of often overlooked people and communities, offering wisdom for all people who hope to encounter God in the midst of wearying times. It provides fresh reflections on familiar biblical passages, and draws on personal stories, theology and the spiritual wisdom of ancestors who have gone before us.

Book Let God Deal with Him

  • Pages : 158 pages

Download or read book Let God Deal with Him written by Apostle Vivien Rose and published by . This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may find it interesting to note, God works on men and women in different ways because the heart of men has been moulded separately to that of women. During a season of prolonged prayer for men to be saved, and restored to their families the heavenly Father gave me an insight into how HE DEALS WITH MEN. As a rule, He works on men and in women. Only three of the ten ways are positive. However all ten ways yield positive results. The process is often difficult and challenging yet the Lord permits it in order for your son, brother, husband, father or leader to bear the fruit of repentance, recreation and restoration in his life. The Father's ultimate concern is to redeem the soul of that man.Men have been given a stronger heart to be able to function privately in their priestly office as husbands, fathers, and leaders in the home alongside their public office as kings and priests in ministry, the marketplace and society. Their position was bestowed upon them with a responsibility. However the heart of many men has departed from God and hardened in pride. It is written "God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble" James 4:7. So once a man's heart hardens in pride, he malfunctions in his office, and calling and the first place people feel the consequences is the family unit which is the foundation of the kingdom of God.There are many men in this generation who women have given up on because their heart is beyond the reach of human reasoning and persuasion. These men have ignored the cry and pleas of God, men and women alike. Thankfully no man is beyond the reach of God. Warning! We are living in dark days and men are the number one target for the devil However the One men should fear in these last days is God Himself. Eternity is knocking at the door. LET GOD DEAL WITH HIM "10 WAYS GOD DEALS WITH MEN" is a revelation of how God is restoring divine order in the family, the church and the Kingdom of God. It reveals why men's hearts have become so hard and how God in these last days is going to deal with them in order to save them. This book will show you ten ways in which God teaches, reaches and changes the hearts of men. Only three of the ways are positive, but all ten yield positive results and tutor men to honour and submit to the will of God. MEN WILL IDENTIFY why they are experiencing certain challenges and what to do about it. Plus It will help WOMEN TO REDIRECT their focus away from talking about what men are doing to hurt them and take them deeper into effective intercession which produces change! Finally it will help the BODY OF CHRIST to understand how crucial it is to prioritise resources concerning reaching and raising godly boys, youth and men in the Church. As we yield to divine wisdom, we will experience a mighty harvest of souls of men, women, children and families. Reviving the nations, one family at a time!
