This implies the inclusion of the energy equation and non-constant fluid properties in the continuity and momentum equations. The necessary additions are included in new chapters, leaving the first nine chapters to serve as an introduction to incompressible flows and, therefore, as a platform for the extension. This part of the book can be used for a one semester course as described below. Improvements to the incompressible flows portion of the book include the removal of listings of computer programs and their description, and their incor poration in two CD-ROMs. A listing of the topics incorporated in the CD-ROM is provided before the index. In Chapter 7 there is a more extended discussion of initial conditions for three-dimensional flows, application of the characteristic box to a model problem and discussion of flow separation in three-dimensional laminar flows. There are also changes to Chapter 8, which now includes new sections on Tollmien-Schlichting and cross-flow instabilities and on the predic tion of transition with parabolised stability equations, and Chapter 9 provides a description of the rational behind interactive boundary-layer procedures.

The first two sections focus on instabilities and transition in sub sonic and supersonic flows, respectively. The third section deals with developing turbulence, while the the final section treats related prob lems in engineering fluid mechanics. The diversity and scope of the articles contained herein exemplify the insight and expertise required in the study of transitional and turbulent flows today - traits which also exemplify Eli Reshotko's contributions to these fields. A few of the articles in this volume were presented at a sym posium in honor of Eli Reshotko's 60th birthday, held in Newport News, Virginia, on July 28, 1991. The symposium was sponsored by lCASE, and organized by M.Y. Hussaini (lCASE) and R. Hirsh (U.S. National Science Foundation). Of those who could not attend, many chose to honor Professor Reshotko by a contribution to the volume dedicated to him. We would like to use this opportunity to express our deep ap preciation to M.Y. Volume I contains the contributions from the transi tion research, and Volume II contains the contributions from both the turbulence and combustion research. This is the third workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, the second in 1991, and their proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the titles "Instability and Transition" (edited by M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt) and "Instability, Transition and Turbulence" (edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar and C. L. Streett) respectively. The objectives of these workshops are to expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of transition, turbulence and combustion, and to acquaint the academic commu nity with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC. It is hoped these will foster con tinued interactions, and accelerate progress in elucidating the funda mental phenomena of transition, turbulence and combustion. Book excerpt: Starting from fundamentals of classical stability theory, an overview is given of the transition phenomena in subsonic, wall-bounded shear flows. At first, the consideration focuses on elementary small-amplitude velocity perturbations of laminar shear layers, i.e. instability waves, in the simplest canonical configurations of a plane channel flow and a flat-plate boundary layer. Then the linear stability problem is expanded to include the effects of pressure gradients, flow curvature, boundary-layer separation, wall compliance, etc. related to applications. Beyond the amplification of instability waves is the non-modal growth of local stationary and non-stationary shear flow perturbations which are discussed as well. The volume continues with the key aspect of the transition process, that is, receptivity of convectively unstable shear layers to external perturbations, summarizing main paths of the excitation of laminar flow disturbances. The remainder of the book addresses the instability phenomena found at late stages of transition. These include secondary instabilities and nonlinear features of boundary-layer perturbations that lead to the final breakdown to turbulence. Thus, the reader is provided with a step-by-step approach that covers the milestones and recent advances in the laminar-turbulent transition. Special aspects of instability and transition are discussed through the book and are intended for research scientists, while the main target of the book is the student in the fundamentals of fluid mechanics.
