Book Inverse Nodal Problems Finding the Potential from Nodal Lines

Download or read book Inverse Nodal Problems Finding the Potential from Nodal Lines written by Ole H. Hald and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we consider an eigenvalue problem which arises in the study of rectangular membranes. The mathematical model is an elliptic equation, in potential form, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that the potential is uniquely determined, up to an additive constant, by a subset of the nodal lines of the eigenfunctions. A formula is shown which, when the additive constant is given, yields an approximation to the potential at a dense set of points. We present an estimate for the error made by the formula. A substantial part of this work is the derivation of the asymptotic forms for a rich set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a large set of rectangles.

Book Progress In Nonlinear Analysis Proceedings Of The Second International Conference On Nonlinear Analysis

Download or read book Progress In Nonlinear Analysis Proceedings Of The Second International Conference On Nonlinear Analysis written by Kung-ching Chang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-07-24 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real world is complicated, as a result of which most mathematical models arising from mechanics, physics, chemistry and biology are nonlinear. Based on the efforts of scientists in the 20th century, especially in the last three decades, topological, variational, geometrical and other methods have developed rapidly in nonlinear analysis, which made direct studies of nonlinear models possible in many cases, and provided global information on nonlinear problems which was not available by the traditional linearization method. This volume reflects that rapid development in many areas of nonlinear analysis.

Book Method of Spectral Mappings in the Inverse Problem Theory

Download or read book Method of Spectral Mappings in the Inverse Problem Theory written by V. A. Yurko and published by VSP. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse problems of spectral analysis consist in recovering operators from their spectral characteristics. Such problems often appear in mathematics, mechanics, physics, electronics, geophysics, meteorology and other branches of natural science. This monograph deals with inverse problems of spectral analysis for ordinary differential equations and aims to present the main results on inverse spectral problems using the so-called method of spectral mappings, which is one of the main tools in inverse spectral theory. The book consists of three chapters and opens with the method of spectral mappings, presented in the simplest version for the Sturm-Liouville operator. The second chapter deals with the inverse problem of recovering higher-order differential operators of the form, on the half-line and on a finite interval. In this chapter the author introduces the so-called Weyl matrix, which is a generalization of the classical Weyl function for the selfadjoint second-order differential operator. The last chapter contains a study on inverse spectral problems for differential equations with nonlinear dependence on the spectral parameter. This monograph will be of value and interest to specialists in the field of inverse problems for differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest collection of proceedings provides a state of the art review of research on inverse problems in engineering mechanics. Inverse problems can be found in many areas of engineering mechanics, and have many successful applications. They are concerned with estimating the unknown input and/or the characteristics of a system given certain aspects of its output. The mathematical challenges of such problems have to be overcome through the development of new computational schemes, regularization techniques, objective functionals, and experimental procedures. The papers within this represent an excellent reference for all in the field. - Providing a state of the art review of research on inverse problems in engineering mechanics - Contains the latest research ideas and related techniques - A recognized standard reference in the field of inverse problems - Papers from Asia, Europe and America are all well represented

Book Nonlinear Analysis in Inverse Problems and Control

Download or read book Nonlinear Analysis in Inverse Problems and Control written by Joyce R. McLaughlin and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major activity is in inverse nodal problems, a new class of inverse problems. This work is focused on uniqueness results, algorithms and bounds for the algorithms and bounds for the algorithms. These new results show strong uniqueness theorems and (surprisingly) accurate algorithms with a minimum amount of data. Another major area of research has been obtained for inverse spectral theory problems. Existence and uniqueness results are sought, in current projects, for inverse membrane problems and for one dimensional problems with 'rough' coefficients. Accurate approximations are sought of continuous inverse problems by discretionary inverse problems. (kr).

Book Inverse Problems in Groundwater Modeling

Download or read book Inverse Problems in Groundwater Modeling written by Ne-Zheng Sun and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ... A diskette with the updated programme of Appendix C and examples is available through the author at a small fee. email: [email protected] fax: 1--310--825--5435 ... This book systematically discusses basic concepts, theory, solution methods and applications of inverse problems in groundwater modeling. It is the first book devoted to this subject. The inverse problem is defined and solved in both deterministic and statistic frameworks. Various direct and indirect methods are discussed and compared. As a useful tool, the adjoint state method and its applications are given in detail. For a stochastic field, the maximum likelihood estimation and co-kriging techniques are used to estimate unknown parameters. The ill-posed problem of inverse solution is highlighted through the whole book. The importance of data collection strategy is specially emphasized. Besides the classical design criteria, the relationships between decision making, prediction, parameter identification and experimental design are considered from the point of view of extended identifiabilities. The problem of model structure identification is also considered. This book can be used as a textbook for graduate students majoring in hydrogeology or related subjects. It is also a reference book for hydrogeologists, petroleum engineers, environmental engineers, mining engineers and applied mathematicians.

Book The Radon Transform and Medical Imaging

Download or read book The Radon Transform and Medical Imaging written by Peter Kuchment and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the main mathematical ideas and techniques behind some well-established imaging modalities such as X-ray CT and emission tomography, as well as a variety of newly developing coupled-physics or hybrid techniques, including thermoacoustic tomography. The Radon Transform and Medical Imaging emphasizes mathematical techniques and ideas arising across the spectrum of medical imaging modalities and explains important concepts concerning inversion, stability, incomplete data effects, the role of interior information, and other issues critical to all medical imaging methods. For nonexperts, the author provides appendices that cover background information on notation, Fourier analysis, geometric rays, and linear operators. The vast bibliography, with over 825 entries, directs readers to a wide array of additional information sources on medical imaging for further study.

Book Decision Problems for Equational Theories of Relation Algebras

Download or read book Decision Problems for Equational Theories of Relation Algebras written by H. Andréka and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We prove that any variety of relation algebras which contains an algebra with infinitely many elements below the identity, or which contains the full group relation algebra on some infinite group (or on arbitrarily large finite groups), must have an undecidable equational theory. Then we construct an embedding of the lattice of all subsets of the natural numbers into the lattice of varieties of relation algebras such that the variety correlated with a set [italic capital]X of natural numbers has a decidable equational theory if and only if [italic capital]X is a decidable (i.e., recursive) set. Finally, we construct an example of an infinite, finitely generated, simple, representable relation algebra that has a decidable equational theory.'' -- Abstract.
