Book On Slight Ailments and on Treating Disease Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Slight Ailments and on Treating Disease Classic Reprint written by Lionel S. Beale and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Slight Ailments, and on Treating Disease Each one of us has, no doubt, suffered at times from slight derangements of the health - derangements which are not dependent upon or likely to determine structural change in any tissue or organ of the body, but due rather to temporary disturbance - to an alteration in the ordinary activity of tissues and organs, which soon may be succeeded by a return to the healthy state. In many instances the derangement is, in fact, an alteration in the rate at which normal phenomena are performed. Perhaps, in consequence of changes in the blood itself or in the tissues outside the vessels, the blood may flow too slowly or too quickly through the capillaries. These tubes often become unduly distended or relaxed, and disturbed action in the adjacent nerve-fibres being thereby occasioned, pain or discomfort is experienced. Among civilised nations a perfectly healthy individual seems to be the exception rather than the rule. I do not remember having seen more than two or three men in the course of my life who had never experienced any form of illness and did not know what it was to feel out of sorts. It is indeed very rarely one meets with a person who has reached the age of thirty who will not admit that at various times he has suffered from many different, though slight, derangements of health. We are indeed often told by those whose prospects of longevity are nevertheless good, that they have scarcely passed a week without the occurrence of some very decided departure from the perfectly healthy state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Slight Ailments: Their Nature and Treatment Some, again, who are considered to be in perfect health, scarcely know what it is to sleep soundly and rise refreshed, with spirits buoyant, ener getic, with a desire for work. Men and women there are, and in every class of society, poor as well as rich, hardworking as well as idle, who scarcely ever eat without discomfort, and suffer still more if they do not take their usual meal. Few, indeed, of those who live in cities pass through life without being troubled with various derangements connected with the action of the stomach and intestinal canal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symptoms and Treatment of All Diseases The best physicians at present, consider Feyer a disease of the whole system: and seem to have but little confidence, in any theory that has been suggest ed respecting its nature. There is, however, a gem eral belief, that the reaction of the heart and arteries, is an effort of nature to throw off. Disease, but they think the attempt to ascertain the first link in the chain of diseased act1on, is vain. The inference drawn by the Thomsonians, from this theory, is, that Feve and inflammation are friends, and should be treated as such; but they are such fuénds as often destroy life, by their too Violent efforts to restore. Book Of Nature and Art in the Cure of Disease Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of Nature and Art in the Cure of Disease It is true that, since the period referred to, great advances have been made in some important points of the history of diseases, as in their structural pathology or morbid anatomy, as well as in many of their physiological relations so that it must be admitted that well-informed practitioners of the present day, have a much deeper insight into the exact character of many of the diseases treated by them, than was possessed by their predecessors. It is very remarkable, however, that in regard to one most important part of the history of diseases, that, namely, of their natural course and event, infinitely less progress has been made insomuch that it may now be affirmed that the practitioners of the present day are, speaking generally, almost as uninformed in this particular as were their predecessors fifty or a hundred years back. Book A Manual of the Practice of Medicine Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of the Practice of Medicine Classic Reprint written by Frederick Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 916 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Practice of Medicine A Manual of the Practice of Medicine should deal with diseases, their nature, course and treatment. It has never been very satisfactorily determined what is to be called disease, or what are to be called diseases. TO say that disease is any divergence from health, or anything that is the Opposite of health, opens up the question, What is health? To this the answer is A perfect structure Of all the organs or tissues, with a perfect performance of all their functions and, in the broadest sense, any alteration Of structure or function may be called disease. But some special cases have to be considered. A distinction is commonly drawn between injury and disease; but the inflammation which so Often results from injury is disease of structure and function, and although the immediate effects Of injuries are not generally spoken Of as diseases, remote troubles sometimes occur which are so classed. Slight ailments, whether of a structural kind, such as mild catarrhs, or of a functional kind, like headaches - are Often Spoken of not as diseases, but as disorders, or ailments. There is, however, no essential difference, and no broad line Of distinction can be drawn between those which pass Off readily, leaving no trace, and those which persist, or recur frequently, or finally shorten life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cause, Cure, and Prevention of Disease MY only object in the writing of this book is to tell what I know to be the truth. I have endeavored to make my criticism independent of my prejudices, understanding as I do that prejudice never knows the Value of a fact. While my criticism of the medical profession, and of all those engaged in the treatment of disease, may seem somewhat severe, yet I have said nothing that 1 have not myself verified. Here it may be well to state that in the medical profession there are many noble and useful men, whose gen ius and skill in surgery are only surpassed by their honest ambition to accomplish good. It has been my intention for Some time to write a book which, from my personal experience, I knew would be of great importance and benefit to the human race. Yet I know that upon this subject of disease much glistening eloquence has been squandered in the hope of personal gain. Book Chronic Ailments and Their Cure Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chronic Ailments and Their Cure Classic Reprint written by C. S. Eldridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronic Ailments and Their Cure Doctors have failed in the past, and good doctors, too, because they did not understand that what most people complain of as actual disease 1s but the reflected shadow of it, and not the disease itself. Most symptoms we, as physicians, are called upon to treat, are due to morbid conditions located at points remote from those to which our attention is usually directed by patients. Too many times the patient makes the trump, plays the leading card, and the doctor follows suit. To the medical man who understands the subject of reflex or sympathetic irritation, such a course is an impossibility, for he certainly can point out the reasons for a patient's misconceived notions, and by logical reasoning predi cated upon a thorough knowledge and understanding of orificial philosophy, orificial pathology, and or'ificial treatment, portray the exact nature of ailments, and make appear reasonable a cer tainty of cure. Experience and much observation have taught me that what most people complain of - I mean such as have symptoms, but never could succeed in cornering their trouble, or getting a suitable name for it - invariably have a localized, mor bid condition, situated in some cavity or channel, ensconced, as it were, conveniently out of sight, yet always working to the great discomfort and abridgment of health. To state it more explicitly, the aches and pains, the blanched and sad faces we see in such multiplied numbers; the disordered and faulty working stomachs, the hearts irritable and palpitating, torpid livers, kidneys crippled in their work, bowels poor in peristaltic action, minds amiss in either sex, are but the inevitable, the legitimate fruits of nerve waste. Nerve waste is responsible for a poor capillary circulation, which may mean congestion in one part and lack of blood in an other. Capillary circulation makes and keeps bones in repair; through it assimilation and nutrition are carried on. If this be so, then it must be plain that to abridge or destroy capillary action is to abridge repair, and the processes that sustain life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Diseases of the Skin: With Notes of Diagnosis and Treatment The object of this small volume is to provide illustrations and a Short description of some of the commoner diseases of the Skin, with a few lines on differential diagnosis and methods of treatment. NO one appreciates better than the author that dermatology can only be properly taught from clinical material, but this is not always within reach of the student and illustra tions can in a measure replace it. The book is not intended to take the place of the larger works on dermatology, but the necessarily comprehensive nature of such works makes them at times a source of confusion to the student, whose lack of knowledge renders it difficult for him to identify one disease among the descriptions of a number of somewhat similar, but perhaps rare, ones. Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine of mcgill University will recognize that - the views enunciated closely follow the teaching of the former Professor Of Dermatology, Dr. Francis J. Shepherd, whose almost uncanny astuteness in diagnosis and simple methods of treatment the writer had the advantage of following for twenty years as his assistant in the Montreal General Hospital clinic. In choosing the diseases which Should be included in a work of this scope, the writer has based his selection on the statistics of the hospital clinic with which he is connected, thereby, possibly, admitting some not properly classed as common, because of the large proportion of aliens in his clientele. I have not thought it necessary to dwell minutely upon maladies of rare occurrence, or upon details which are interesting only to specialists; neither have I attempted to achieve that kind of completeness which is produced by undigested compilation. Hence there is no bond of union between these forces and the organism, and it must be possible to separate them. Download or read book Functional and Organic Diseases of the Stomach Classic Reprint written by Sidney Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Functional and Organic Diseases of the Stomach IT is some years since a systematic treatise on diseases of the stomach was published in English. No apology is there fore necessary for the issue of this work. During the past few years great advances have been made not. Only in patho logical chemistry, but in pathology generally; and these advances specially affect the study of functional and organic diseases of the stomach, inasmuch as the changes in the processes of digestion in disease have been studied during life, with the result of throwing great light not only on the symptoms, but also on the treatment of these diseases. Since it is possible to study changes in secretion, and, to a less extent, those in motor activity of the stomach during life, the functional disorders of the organ can be with advantage discussed in a separate treatise.
