Book Gender Differences and the Making of Liturgical History

Download or read book Gender Differences and the Making of Liturgical History written by Teresa Berger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping uncharted territory in the study of liturgy's past, this book offers a history to contemporary questions around gender and liturgical life. Teresa Berger looks at liturgy's past through the lens of gender history, understood as attending not only to the historically prominent binary of "men" and "women" but to all gender identities, including inter-sexed persons, ascetic virgins, eunuchs, and priestly men. Demonstrating what a gender-attentive inquiry is able to achieve, Berger explores both traditional fundamentals such as liturgical space and eucharistic practice and also new ways of studying the past, for example by asking about the developing link between liturgical presiding and priestly masculinity. Drawing on historical case studies and focusing particularly on the early centuries of Christian worship, this book ultimately aims at the present by lifting a veil on liturgy's past to allow for a richly diverse notion of gender differences as these continue to shape liturgical life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholic ecclesiology stands at the threshold of a new moment in the reception of the Second Vatican Council. The election of Pope Francis- coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the council-has inspired a fresh consideration of its teaching in such diverse areas as ecumenism, inculturation, missiology, and ministry. The chapters in this volume have their origin in a special symposium honoring the ecclesiological legacy of Thomas F. O'Meara, OP. The symposium called together over forty leading North American scholars in order to discuss the future of Catholic theological reflection on the church-a conversation that offers an entry into some of the most pressing issues in ecclesiology today.

Book From Blind Obedience to a Responsible Faith

Download or read book From Blind Obedience to a Responsible Faith written by Donald F. Fausel and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Donald F. Fausel was raised in the pre-Vatican II Catholic Church, when prescribed beliefs were rarely questioned and blind obedience to authority trumped following ones conscience. Through a process of developing an informed conscience and learning to think critically, his journey led him to a more responsible faith, while remaining in his Catholic tradition. This memoir recalls Fausels life experiences, his reflections on those events, and how they affected his spiritual journeyfrom his birth in 1929; his formative years; his life in the seminary and ordination in 1957; his nine years in the active ministry, ending with a dispensation from the Vatican in 1972; and his continued journey as a married Catholic. Fausel reflects on a range of faith-related issues: the differences between faith and beliefs; abortion and artificial birth control; the doctrine of infallibility; the danger of relying solely on the magisterium; the charism of celibacy and mandatory celibacy; the place of women in the church and the ordination of women; and the effect of the new cosmology on our image of God. Not only does Fausels memoir frame the events that shaped his life, but provides reflections to help others in their faith journey.

Book The Mystical Priesthood of the Mother of God

Download or read book The Mystical Priesthood of the Mother of God written by Walda Taylor-Javier and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-06-15 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope John Paul II has claimed to have no authority to ordain women to the priesthood. Since the Catholic Church believes that all legitimate authority is derived from its source—God, the Creator, Dr. Javier shows how the authority is present in the Church to ordain women priests by virtue of God's own example. In choosing Mary as the one human parent of Jesus, the Christ, God ordained her priest by definition. Dr. Javier shows how the belief has been implicit in the Church since its inception, using scripture, tradition, and theological writings including those of Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger. Examining the need of today's church for priestly vocations and the expressed desire of women to serve the Church through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, Dr. Javier concludes that Mary, the Mother of God, first woman priest, is the exemplar for the ordination of women.

Book Ignatian Spirituality at Ecclesial Frontiers

Download or read book Ignatian Spirituality at Ecclesial Frontiers written by Fredrik Heiding S.J. and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order, presuppose Roman Catholicism, but are today made by many who are not Catholics. Moreover, even Roman Catholics who make Ignatian Exercises often are not spontaneously inclined to obey Roman ecclesiastical authority. Neither avoiding the ecclesial dimension nor an authoritarian 'follow the rules!' provides adequate orientation when working with issues at Church frontiers. This ground-breaking study in pastoral theology seeks to navigate a middle position by moving beyond the individualism and the a-historical assumptions of the existing relevant literature. The aim of this book is to take Ignatian studies forward by combining relational anthropology, hermeneutics and a sacramental understanding of the Church, and to apply this synthesis to the practice of Ignatian Exercises. Book Gospel On the Road To Emmaus

Download or read book Gospel On the Road To Emmaus written by Edward Joseph Clemmer and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-03-17 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Indiana, Dr. Edward J. Clemmer is a social psychologist by profession. He now lives with his Maltese wife, Jane Zammit, and enjoys dual citizenship with Malta. His four sons by a previous marriage continue to live in America. His personal journey with the Lord into this Gospel (on the Road to) Emmaus began in a moment of grace on 12th September 2003, as Ed was on his way to the priest. The context for this initiation was the Feast of Exultation of Holy Cross (14th September), as the source of every grace is derived from the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The gospel is explained for us as the author and reader journey with the Lord as potential disciples. Our journey begins at Bethany near the Jordan with John the Baptist preaching and baptizing. Part 1 continues up to the Transfiguration of Jesus. Volume One reaches its climax before the Lords final journey to Jerusalem, when Jesus returns to Bethany where the Baptist had preached. Volume Two resumes with the Lords healing and preaching at Bethany near the Jordan. Part 2 concludes in Bethany near Jerusalem with the Lords dinner celebration with Lazarus, after Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead. This celebration anticipates the Lords death and resurrection, and ours in Christ. Part 3 takes up the Grand Liturgy of the Lords New Creation, with Holy Week. The book initially concludes with a retrospective of the incarnation, of Jesus as God-with-us, and with the parallel coming of the Spirit at Pentecost. Then, in the Part 4 conclusion of this gospel, our post-Emmaus journey with the risen Lord returns to our post-Pentecost life in the Holy Spirit. The authors seven-year personal journey through this Gospel Emmaus ends in 2010 with the Feast of Sukkot, just as when the Lord also had anticipated the Holy Spirit. But the Lord provides us with his own conclusion: although he had healed ten lepers as they were on their way to the priest, only one had returned to give thanks.

Book The Catholic Labyrinth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter McDonough
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2013-06-14
  • ISBN : 0199989834
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book The Catholic Labyrinth written by Peter McDonough and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual abuse scandals, declining attendance, a meltdown in the number of priests and nuns, the closing of many parishes and parochial schools--all have shaken American Catholicism. Yet conservatives have increasingly dominated the church hierarchy. In The Catholic Labyrinth, Peter McDonough tells a tale of multiple struggles that animate various groups--the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, Voice of the Faithful, and the Leadership Roundtable chief among them--pushing to modernize the church. One contest pits reformers against those who back age-old standards of sexual behavior and gender roles. Another area of contention, involving efforts to maintain the church's far-flung operations in education, social services, and healthcare, raises constitutional issues about the separation of church and state. Once a sidebar to this debate, the bishops' campaign to control the terms of employment and access to contraceptives in church-sponsored ministries has fueled conflict further. McDonough draws on behind-the-scenes documentation and personal interviews with leading reformers and "loyalists" to explore how both retrenchment and resistance to clericalism have played out in American Catholicism. Despite growing support for optional celibacy among priests, the ordination of women, and similar changes, and in the midst of numerous departures from the church, immigration and a lingering reaction against the upheavals of the sixties have helped sustain a popular traditionalism among "Catholics in the pews." So have the polemics of Catholic neoconservatives. These demographic and cultural factors--as well as the silent dissent of those who simply ignore rather than oppose the church's more regressive positions--have reinforced a culture of deference that impedes reform. At the same time, selective managerial improvements show promise of advancing incremental change. Timely and incisive, The Catholic Labyrinth captures the church at a historical crossroads, as advocates for change struggle to reconcile religious mores with the challenges of modernity.
