Obwohl im Prinzip darüber einig, dass der christliche Glaube in seiner Grundtendenz von einem übernationalen, ja universalistischen Charakter geprägt ist, wird spätestens seit dem 19. Jahrhundert immer wieder gefragt, ob nicht doch Nation und nationale Identität zur Schöpfung Gottes gehören. Gegenwärtig wird das in den Kirchen Europas kontrovers diskutiert, eng verbunden mit Erfahrungen von Migration. "Nation" klingt anders für protestantische Minderheitskirchen als für orthodoxe oder römisch-katholische Kirche in ehemals kommunistischen Staaten und wieder anders für deutsche Kirchen, die ihre Verquickung mit dem Nationalsozialismus verarbeiten müssen. Können Nationalbewusstsein und gegenwärtige Migrationserfahrungen zusammengehen? Haben die Kirchen in ökumenischer Perspektive dazu etwas Spezifisches zu sagen? Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt sich dieser Tagungsband der Societas Oecumenica. Mit Beiträgen von Elzbieta Adamiak, Niko Huttunen, Petre Maican, Ivana Noble, Friederike Nüssel, Peter Phan, Hector Scerri, Peter-Ben Smit, Andrea Strübind, Ulrike Link-Wieczorek, Kaholi Zhimomi Churches in Europe have specific historical experiences regarding their relationship with the nation. Although in principle it is agreed that the Christian faith is in its basic tendency shaped by a supranational, even universalistic character, since the 19th century at the latest it has been repeatedly asked whether nation and national identity do not belong to God's creation. At present this is controversially discussed in the churches of Europe, closely connected with experiences of migration. Can national consciousness and current migration experiences go together? Do churches have anything specific to say about this in an ecumenical perspective? These are the questions addressed in this conference volume of the Societas Oecumenica.

Populist ethno-nationalist discourse seeks to ignite fear and hate, promote marginalization and exclusion of those who are regarded as not belonging to "the people". What is the role and responsibility of theology and the churches in the midst of these developments? Church leaders and teaching theologians from eighteen different countries offer analyses, trace emerging global trends and outline some country-specific developing situations. Welche Rolle und Verantwortung haben die Theologie und die Kirchen angesichts dieser Entwicklungen? Kirchenleitende und Theologen aus achtzehn verschiedenen Ländern erstellen Analysen, verfolgen neue globale Tendenzen und beschreiben einige länderspezifische Entwicklungssituationen. Book excerpt: While wars between nations have taken a staggering toll in human lives, even more people died in the 20th century from violence at the hand of their own governments. Much of this suffering and death has been sparked by tensions and hostilities arising out of ethnic differences. Today's social, economic and political realities, including the weakening of the nation state in a global economy and the disappearance of multi-ethnic nation states such as the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, mean that ethnic conflict is likely to remain on the international agenda. For the churches, committed to reconciliation but often themselves identified with one party or another in ethnic conflicts, this raises critical questions regarding their mission in the world. The heart of this book is case studies of nine 20th-century ethnic conflicts, in which millions of people have perished. The author illustrates the complexity of these situations as they have evolved over the centuries and highlights the role which religious affiliations and convictions, including Christianity, have often played in worsening relations among ethnic communities. A final chapter suggests four lines of reflection and action for Christian churches confronted by ethnic conflicts in their own contexts and elsewhere. This book is intended to help concerned Christian individuals, congregations and study groups to recognize the complexity of issues of ethnicity and nationalism, reflect biblically and theologically on ethnic identity, and respond pastorally to such situations of tension and conflict.
