Book Mechanical Aspects of Interfaces and Surfaces in Ceramic Containing Systems

Download or read book Mechanical Aspects of Interfaces and Surfaces in Ceramic Containing Systems written by A. G. Evans and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical behavior of various multicomponent materials have been investigated. The systems studied include ceramic matrix composites, metal/ceramic bonded systems and polymer particulate composites. Experimental observations of fracture behavior have been used to develop criteria that identify the fracture parameters pertinent to structural design. For example, the matrix cracking strength and the ultimate tensile strength have emerged as important parameters in ceramic composite failure. Micromechanics models of mechanical behaviors have also been developed, whenever experimental knowledge sufficiently characterizes the important physical features. Matrix cracking in composites and edge effects in metal/ceramic bonded systems are examples of phenomena that have been comprehensively modelled. Originator supplied keywords include: Ceramic matrix composites; metal/ceramic bonded systems; particulate toughened polymers; interface bonding; interface friction; crack blunting; edge effects; fracture toughness; matrix cracking; indentation fracture; and metal/ceramic interfaces.

Book Surfaces and Interfaces in Ceramic and Ceramic Metal Systems

Download or read book Surfaces and Interfaces in Ceramic and Ceramic Metal Systems written by Joseph Pask and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 17th University Conference on Ceramics, which also was the 7th LBL/MMRD International Materials Symposium, was held on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley from July 28 to August 1, 1980. It was devoted to the subject of surfaces and interfaces in ceramic and ceramic-metal systems. The program was timely and of great interest, as indicated by the large number of contributed papers, which included contributions from ten foreign countries. These proceedings are divided into the following categories dealing with the chemistry and physics of interfaces: calculations of interface/surface states, characterization of surfaces and inter faces, thermodynamics of interfaces, influence of surface and inter faces on selected ceramic processes, grain boundary structures, effects of grain boundaries on deformation and fracture, interfacial phenomena, formation of interfaces, development of adhesion, and reactions at interfaces. A number of papers deal specifically with the Si-Si02 interface, which probably has received more attention than any other because of its importance in the electronics industry. This coverage fulfills the principal objective of the symposium which was to explore and assess the current fundamental understand ing of interfaces and surfaces. A parallel objective of the symposium was fulfilled by a group of papers dealing with the correlation of interfacial characteris tics with mechanical behavior. This group includes papers dealing with the adherence of dissimilar materials at interfaces.

Book Metal Ceramic Interfaces Relationships Between Structures Chemistry and Interfaces

Download or read book Metal Ceramic Interfaces Relationships Between Structures Chemistry and Interfaces written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interface fracture resistance measurements have been conducted on metal/ceramic interfaces with and without reaction products. Both ductile and brittle interface fracture have been documented. Some effects of residual stress have also been investigated. The influence of thermal expansion misfit on the mechanical behavior of metal/ceramic bonded systems has been shown to be strongly governed by the sign of the misfit strain, its magnitude, the yield strength of the metal and to be subject to substantial geometric effects. In some cases, the misfit causes interface failure, while in other, cracking occurs in the ceramic. Generally, misfit has detrimental effects on bond strength, but in special cases, the bond strength can actually be improved. Reaction products exhibit a wide variety of fracture behaviors. In some cases, the reaction products are brittle and subject to residual stress, leading to low fracture energy interfaces governed by the fracture resistance of the reaction product. In other cases ductile reaction products occur, resulting in good bond properties and fracture energies that increase as the reaction product layer thickness increases. Stress corrosion has been found to occur at oxide/metal interfaces, leading to substantial reductions in the fracture resistance. The phenomenon is governed by water vapor and is similar to, but more pronounced than, that found in oxides.

Book Metal Ceramic Interfaces

Download or read book Metal Ceramic Interfaces written by M. Rühle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As engineering materials and structures often contain a metal or metallic alloy bonded to a ceramic, the resultant interface must be able to sustain mechanical forces without failure. They also play an important role in oxidation or reduction of materials. The workshop on 'Bonding, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces' was held in January 1989 within the Acta/Scripta Metallurgica conference series. It drew together an international collection of 70 scientists who discussed a wide range of issues related to metal-ceramic interfaces. The sessions were divided into 7 categories: structure and bonding, chemistry at interfaces, formation of interfaces, structure of interfaces, thermodynamics/atomistics of interface fracture, mechanics of interface cracks, and fracture resistance of bimaterial interfaces. Within these headings attention was paid to grain boundaries, the influence of chemical processes on the behaviour of interfaces, diffusion bonding, characterization of fracture, and crack propagation by fatigue and by stress corrosion. The book presents a useful reference source for materials scientists, physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers who are concerned with the roles and properties of interfaces.

Finally an appendix chapter is included in which a collection of several types of questions including multiple choice, short answer and long answer are provided.

Book Bonding at Metal Ceramic Interfaces in Hybrid Materials

Download or read book Bonding at Metal Ceramic Interfaces in Hybrid Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical properties of metal-ceramic interfaces were measured at high temperatures. New methods were developed to measure the time and strain rate dependent properties of metal-ceramic interfaces under shear loading and under tensile loading. The shear experiment consisted of depositing a film of the ceramic on the metal and stretching the metal until periodic cracks developed in the ceramic film. Experiments on the copper/silica system demonstrated that these interfaces slide at high temperatures, with a linear relationship between sliding rate and the interfacial shear stress. In tensile experiments, bicrystals of copper and sapphire were loaded in tension.
