New York Times bestselling author John Lescroart’s most beloved protagonist returns in a masterful novel that showcases the author’s extraordinary storytelling gifts: a cast of flesh-and-blood characters, morally complex situations, and relentless, nail-biting suspense. When his brother-in-law and old friend Moses McGuire is the prime suspect in the murder of his own daughter’s rapist, attorney Dismas Hardy agrees to defend him. But McGuire has fallen off the wagon, and his stay in prison could bring to light old secrets that would destroy Hardy and his closest colleagues’ careers. As the overwhelming evidence against McGuire piles up, Hardy focuses on planting doubt in the minds of the jurors—until, in a feat of legal ingenuity that is staggering in both its implications and its simplicity, he sees a new way forward that might just save them all. Book Heroin Acting and Comedy in New York City

Download or read book Heroin Acting and Comedy in New York City written by Barry Spunt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on New York City-based actors and comedians who are self-acknowledged heroin users. Barry Spunt examines a number of hypotheses about the reasons why actors and comedians use heroin as well as the impact of heroin on performance, creativity, and career trajectory. A primary concern of the book is the role that subculture and identity play in helping us to understand the heroin use of these entertainers. Spunt captures the voices of actors and comedians through narrative accounts from a variety of secondary sources. He also examines how New York-based films about heroin relate to the major themes of his research.

Book Crossing the Creek

Download or read book Crossing the Creek written by Anna Lillios and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the twentieth century's most intriguing and complicated literary friendships was that between Zora Neale Hurston and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. In death, their reputations have reversed, but in the early 1940s Rawlings had already achieved wild success with her best-selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Yearling, while Hurston had published Their Eyes Were Watching God to unfavorable critical reviews. When they met, both were at the height of their literary powers. Hurston appears to have sought out Rawlings as a writer who could understand her talent and as a potential patron and champion. Rawlings did become an advocate for Hurston, and by all accounts a warm friendship developed between the two. Yet at every turn, Rawlings's own racism and the societal norms of the Jim Crow South loomed on the horizon, until her friendship with Hurston transformed Rawlings's views on the subject and made her an advocate for racial equality. Anna Lillios's Crossing the Creek is the first book to examine the productive and complex relationship between these two major figures. Is there truth to the story that Hurston offered to work as Rawlings's maid? Why did Rawlings host a tea for Hurston in St. Augustine? In what ways did each write the friendship into their novels? Using interviews with individuals who knew both women, as well as incisive readings of surviving letters, Lillios examines these questions and many others in this remarkable book.

Book Troubling the Social

Download or read book Troubling the Social written by Jeremy Punt and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers, from the annual Summer/Spring School of the IRTG, revolve around the theme of “troubling the social”, exploring the complex relationships between religion, social worlds and transformation from the vantage point of the postcolony—not so much as a geographical location, but rather as a way to understand the world. The contributions examine the coloniality inherent within the academic enterprises related to religion, but also what, how, and why religious experiences, worldviews and engagements count as knowledge and the implications this has for understanding, examining, and activating social transformation processes. Processes of transformation have been prominent within the continent in the last decade and still animate crucial debates and knowledge production. In these, religion has figured paradoxically as the “blind spot” or occupied a default and marginal position. However, religion participates, through a complex assemblage of practices, subjectivities and meaning-making processes, in the creation of social worlds, social imagination and social transformations. They also explore how the decolonial renaissance is troubling the social and epistemic origins of religion and the social sciences, as well as its imagined relation to social transformation. Contributors are from Southern Africa and Germany, societies with histories of colonialism and segregation, both of which have experienced postcolonial transformations to the social fabric of their societies, and both have increasingly seen calls also for critical research on coloniality, religion and social transformation.

Book excerpt: Now in mass market, the thirteenth novel of the Hugo-nominated, New York Times-bestselling Toby Daye urban fantasy series! Hundreds of years ago, the Selkies made a deal with the sea witch: they would have the sea for as long as she allowed it, and when the time came, she would call in all their debts at once. Many people assumed that day would never come. Those people were wrong. When the Luidaeg--October "Toby" Daye's oldest and most dangerous ally--tells her the time has come for the Selkies to fulfill their side of the bargain, and that Toby must be a part of the process, Toby can't refuse. Literally. The Selkies aren't the only ones in debt to the Luidaeg, and Toby has to pay what she owes like anyone else. They will travel to the fabled Duchy of Ships and call a convocation of the Selkies, telling them to come and meet the Luidaeg's price...or face the consequences. Of course, nothing is that simple. When Dianda Lorden's brother appears to arrest Dianda for treason against the Undersea, when a Selkie woman is stripped of her skin and then murdered, when everything is falling apart, that's when Toby will have to answer the real question of the hour. Is she going to sink? Or is she going to swim?
