Download or read book On Laughter Silvered Wings written by Gail Strever-Morkel and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well written and thoroughly researched biographical account of the life and times of a South African WW2 pilot (the author's father) is sure to appeal widely. The story is by necessity highly personal, drawing on family history and changing lifestyles as the central figure fights his way through a series of challenging experiences, flying coastal strike missions in the Mediterranean and North Africa, then in the Far East against the Japanese. The story is full of personal perspectives and gets off to a thorough and engrossing operational start, before retracing the personal family story to place everything in context. Images of a lost world haunt the pages, evocative of an era where a decisive individual could challenge the system and get results, despite massive inflexibility within the Services. This work is sure to make a welcome addition to any discerning readers collection; the story of Coastal Command is often overlooked, with histories focusing largely on the Fighter boys and Bomber Boys of World War Two and their associated experiences. The exploits recorded in this book therefore serve as an overdue reminder of the Unit, and the part they played in the Allied effort.Ted's wartime exploits include the first midair skyjacking in history, a daring solitary attack on the Italian fleet after losing the rest of his strike team, narrowly surviving being burnt in the subsequent inferno of a horrific air crash in the Ceylon jungle, many emergency crash landings and finally as Commander of 27 Squadron carrying out dangerous rescue operations behind enemy lines for members of the Indian Resistance Movement who were operating in the jungle of Burma. Written largely in the first person, and illustrated extensively, these exploits come vividly to life.

Douglas Harvey includes delightful anecdotes sent to him by “WDs” -- as enthusiastic and proud as any member of the air force, the first-ever members of the Women's Division led a life that was often tough, but always intriguing. This book contains dozens of hilarious stories from WDs who recall the days when uniforms seemed to come in just a single size -- but women had to be brave in more ways than one. There is a wealth of other incident here as well. Confessions of blunders (or hair-breadth escapes) in the air, details of disastrous parades, and stories of social occasions that were sometimes bungled -- but always enjoyed. Poems, pranks, and practical jokes are all part of this light-hearted look at the air force from pre-Royal Canadian Air Force days on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QF32 is the award winning bestseller from Richard de Crespigny, author of the forthcoming Fly!: Life Lessons from the Cockpit of QF32 On 4 November 2010, a flight from Singapore to Sydney came within a knife edge of being one of the world's worst air disasters. Shortly after leaving Changi Airport, an explosion shattered Engine 2 of Qantas flight QF32 - an Airbus A380, the largest and most advanced passenger plane ever built. Hundreds of pieces of shrapnel ripped through the wing and fuselage, creating chaos as vital flight systems and back-ups were destroyed or degraded. In other hands, the plane might have been lost with all 469 people on board, but a supremely experienced flight crew, led by Captain Richard de Crespigny, managed to land the crippled aircraft and safely disembark the passengers after hours of nerve-racking effort. Tracing Richard's life and career up until that fateful flight, QF32 shows exactly what goes into the making of a top-level airline pilot, and the extraordinary skills and training needed to keep us safe in the air. Fascinating in its detail and vividly compelling in its narrative, QF32 is the riveting, blow-by-blow story of just what happens when things go badly wrong in the air, told by the captain himself. Download or read book To Light a Penny Candle written by Alex Lawson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Light a Penny Candle offers Christmas and Easter devotionals full of colour, poetry, and joyful symbolism to touch our souls in many ways. These holidays, in particular, are a delight for every preacher, with their endless variety of themes and rich messages. The sermons in this collection were written at the height of author Alex Lawson's ministry; preaching was, for him, an activity of great joy. Alex loves the challenge of telling the old, old stories in new and exciting ways. His personal art of preaching shows the influence of two main factors: his extensive training in psychotherapy and his many visits to the lands of the Bible-Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, and Palestine. His sermons reflect his experiences in both cases, offering added insight into the biblical stories he relates. These are topical, homespun sermons, preached to congregations of prairie folk; they surprise and delight with flashes of insight and wisdom, painting in memorable and often lyrical terms a picture of a loving God, as well as a portrait of his loving minister. "Alex Lawson has a way of touching souls, lifting spirits, and bringing scripture alive." -Maxine Reidell, psychotherapist

The story also takes a look at some of the wild R & R escapades Marines experienced in Hong Kong, Bangkok, the Philippines and other hot spots around the world. There is also a provocative look at the political scene in the U.S. during the war in Vietnam and how it affected several of the characters in the book in a ways they never thought possible when the war began. With dialog that snaps with electricity and realism, “Snake, Rolling in Hot” takes the reader into the cockpits of Marine choppers during action packed missions flown against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army. After reading this book, no one will ever feel the same about helicopters and their crews again.
Download or read book The Way the Crow Flies written by Ann-Marie MacDonald and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The sun came out after the war and our world went Technicolor. Everyone had the same idea. Let’s get married. Let’s have kids. Let’s be the ones who do it right.” The Way the Crow Flies, the second novel by bestselling, award-winning author Ann-Marie MacDonald, is set on the Royal Canadian Air Force station of Centralia during the early sixties. It is a time of optimism--infused with the excitement of the space race but overshadowed by the menace of the Cold War--filtered through the rich imagination and quick humour of eight-year-old Madeleine McCarthy and the idealism of her father, Jack, a career officer. Ann-Marie MacDonald said in a discussion with Oprah Winfrey about her first book, “a happy ending is when someone can walk out of the rubble and tell the story.” Madeleine achieves her childhood dream of becoming a comedian, yet twenty years later she realises she cannot rest until she has renewed the quest for the truth, and confirmed how and why the child was murdered.. Publishers Weekly, in a starred review, called The Way the Crow Flies “absorbing, psychologically rich…a chronicle of innocence betrayed”. With compassion and intelligence, and an unerring eye for the absurd as well as the confusions of childhood, , MacDonald evokes the confusion of being human and the necessity of coming to terms with our imperfections.

Faith is part of everyday life and not an opposite of science. He proposes ways to experience the living presence of God in their lives. Faith is not simply believing in creeds. Download or read book Film Pilot written by Jerry Grayson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jerry Grayson left the Royal Navy's Search and Rescue helicopter fleet aged 25, he was the most decorated peacetime naval pilot in history. In terms of excitement, however, civilian life couldn't compete – especially when the only real demand for helicopter pilots was as glorified chauffeurs for the very wealthy. Jerry had a passion for the movies and spotted a way in to a new career. Somebody had to fly those crazy acrobatic stunts and capture dramatic aerial footage, and he reckoned he could do it better, push his helicopter further, and guarantee the most exciting shots, which other pilots might have considered impossible. And he was right. Over the past 35 years Jerry has become the go-to man for aerial filmmaking, shooting everything from music videos, car commercials and nature documentaries to the Athens Olympic Games and the landing of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. But it is in Hollywood that Jerry has really made his mark. He was barely out of his 20s when he worked on the airborne finale to the James Bond film A View to a Kill, and that helped cement his reputation for the decades since. Film Pilot: Flying the Lens is full of entertaining behind-the-scenes stories (some that almost ended in disaster for Jerry and an A-list actor or two...) and revelatory insights into just how this invisible sector of the film business operates. We all take aerial footage for granted, without appreciating the lengths gone to shoot it. This is perhaps never more apparent than when Jerry's skills are called upon to gather more important footage – the burning oilfields of Kuwait following the first Gulf War, and flooded New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
