Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On General Thomas's Staff In the first book of this series, entitled "General Nelson's Scout," the author depicted the struggle in Kentucky during the first year of the war; in the book now offered to an indulgent public, the story is carried forward from the so-called siege of Corinth to that memorable charge which swept the heights of Missionary Ridge. The period embraced by this tale was, for the Union, one of the darkest in the Civil War. It was not until Vicksburg fell and Gettysburg was won that the clouds began to break and roll away. History and fiction are here closely interwoven, and there is hardly an incident given that is not founded on fact. The account of the death of General Nelson is as told by an officer who was close to one of the chief actors in the tragedy. The country never fully realized the great loss it suffered in Nelson's death. If he, instead of General Gilbert, had been in command of the center at Perryville, the history of that battle might have been different. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General George H. Thomas: A Critical Biography Reports of battles, then, were to the people as much stories from the unknown as Stanley's tales of a dark conti nent. Not only this, but the hearers had no information by which to test their truth or probability. A most ludicrous instance of this occurs when General Sheridan's army was surprised and defeated by General Early. The commander was asleep in bed at Winchester, twenty miles away. He would have been called to account for thus ahsenting him self from the front at a time of great peril to his forces from the immediate presence of the enemy, and had to answer to a court of inquiry or a court-martial, but for a crazy poet and a patriotic actor. The very dereliction of duty was made the basis of a rhymed eulogy, and instead of being tried for willful absence, he was glorified by the mob and promoted by the administration. The returning general is pictured as galloping back to the roar and rumble of a ter rific fight and meeting his entire army in full flight. Ac cording to the wild fancy of the rhymester, he alone rallies the panic-stricken thirty thousand and turns them back to victory. The prosaic fact is, that General Wright had re formed the broken lines and was actually moving into battle when Sheridan returned. The fight was made and won without half of the army knowing that General Sheridan was present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thomas We will hold the town till we starve the carrying of Mission or Missionaries' Ridge, at the Confederate centre, opposite Orchard Knob, or Indian Hill, which constituted the grand feature of the second battle of Chattanooga proper; and the supreme triumph at Nashville, Without a parallel on our continent, the only battle of the war (except Mill Spring on a vastly smaller scale) which resulted in the annihilation of an opposing army. Like Gustavus Adolphus, whom he resembled in every virtue, and in every grand pre-eminent characteristic, he was taken away because he was too good to be left, and because, if our people could have lifted up their souls to conceive his; if their minds could only have taken him in as he was; they would have neglected all other idols, and made him the object of their devoted admiration.
