Book On Freud s Psycho Analytic Method and Its Evolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book On Freud s Psycho Analytic Method and Its Evolution Classic Reprint written by James Jackson Putnam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Freud's Psycho-Analytic Method and Its Evolution But while no man, however able, can without long study master the details of this method, every man who would be liberal or scientific can and should master its principles and give the move ment his generous sympathy and support. What is psycho-analysis, and what, in general, are its aims? Psycho-analysis is a method of investigating and treating nervous invalidism and (incidentally) faults of character, which owes its strength to the fact that it searches and studies in detail, so far as this is practicable, all the significant experiences through which the patient to be treated has passed, and the motives and impulses which have animated him at psychologically important moments of his life, even since his earliest childhood. In doing this it discovers, not, indeed, all the causes of the disorder from which he sufiers, but a large number of important partial causes, and thus prepares the way for the influences tending toward recovery. This definition is, I think, substantially correct, but it needs some explanation, amplification and qualification. Book excerpt: The classic, in-depth history of psychoanalysis, presenting over a hundred years of thought and theories Sigmund Freud's concepts have become a part of our psychological vocabulary: unconscious thoughts and feelings, conflict, the meaning of dreams, the sensuality of childhood. But psychoanalytic thinking has undergone an enormous expansion and transformation since Freud's death in 1939. With Freud and Beyond, Stephen A. Mitchell and Margaret J. Black make the full scope of twentieth century psychoanalytic thinking-from Harry Stack Sullivan to Jacques Lacan; D.W. Winnicott to Melanie Klein-available for the first time. Richly illustrated with case examples, this lively, jargon-free introduction makes modern psychoanalytic thought accessible at last.

Download or read book Psychoanalysis written by Clara Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clara Thompson was a leading representative of the cultural interpersonal school of psychoanalysis, sometimes known as the "neo-Freudians," which included Karen Horney, Erich Fromm, and Harry Stack Sullivan. "Classical analysts" once viewed neo-Freudians with the greatest suspicion and mistrust, yet today they can be seen for the innovative group of thinkers they were. Thompson's Psychoanalysis: Evolution and Development, first published in 1950, remains an enormously fair-minded discussion of the history of psychoanalytic theory and therapy. Psychoanalysis has always been a theory of personality as well as a technique of therapy. Since Freud was born in 1856, and was an outstanding representative of the culture of old Vienna, Thompson thought there was plenty of room for revising classical analytic thinking in light of later developments. Such revisionism, she believed, need not lose the essential appreciation of the dynamic unconscious within classical analysis. However, Thompson felt Freud's biological outlook needed to be supplemented by a culturally more sophisticated orientation, and she was among those who tried to put Freud's concepts of libido into historical perspective. Instead of psychoanalysis having as its objective the release of tensions, Thompson proposed that the goal of analysis ought to be the growth of the total personality. Her revisionism also meant that the scope of psychoanalytic treatment could be broadened well beyond the neuroses Freud sought to explain. Thompson well understood the impact of the social environment on character formation. The psychology of women needed to be rethought; differences between men and women could be partly explained by the social expectations that traditional Western culture had imposed on them. Thompson believed the whole analyst-patient relationship needed to be rethought; the real personality of the therapist has to be acknowledged, and the full human interplay between patient and analyst required examination. In the current positivistic therapeutic climate based on technological advances in psychopharmacology, the ethical and humanistic dimension may be lost. Reflecting on the work of Clara Thompson and the neo-Freudian school can remind us of earlier efforts to challenge therapeutic authority and their distinct relevance to our problems today.

Book The Evolution of Psychoanalytic Technique

Download or read book The Evolution of Psychoanalytic Technique written by Martin S. Bergmann and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available for the first time in English, this is the definitive account of the practice of sexual slavery the Japanese military perpetrated during World War II by the researcher principally responsible for exposing the Japanese government's responsibility for these atrocities. The large scale imprisonment and rape of thousands of women, who were euphemistically called "comfort women" by the Japanese military, first seized public attention in 1991 when three Korean women filed suit in a Toyko District Court stating that they had been forced into sexual servitude and demanding compensation. Since then the comfort stations and their significance have been the subject of ongoing debate and intense activism in Japan, much if it inspired by Yoshimi's investigations. How large a role did the military, and by extension the government, play in setting up and administering these camps? What type of compensation, if any, are the victimized women due? These issues figure prominently in the current Japanese focus on public memory and arguments about the teaching and writing of history and are central to efforts to transform Japanese ways of remembering the war. Yoshimi Yoshiaki provides a wealth of documentation and testimony to prove the existence of some 2,000 centers where as many as 200,000 Korean, Filipina, Taiwanese, Indonesian, Burmese, Dutch, Australian, and some Japanese women were restrained for months and forced to engage in sexual activity with Japanese military personnel. Many of the women were teenagers, some as young as fourteen. To date, the Japanese government has neither admitted responsibility for creating the comfort station system nor given compensation directly to former comfort women. This English edition updates the Japanese edition originally published in 1995 and includes introductions by both the author and the translator placing the story in context for American readers.

Its central hypothesis, that we live in conflict with ourselves and seek to resolve matters by turning away from reality, did not emerge from experimental science but from self-examination and the unique opportunities for observation presented by the psychoanalytic technique - in particular, from the confessions produced by 'free-association' in Freud's consulting room. Book The Technique of Child Psychoanalysis

Download or read book The Technique of Child Psychoanalysis written by Joseph Sandler and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book distills the essence of child psychoanalysis from the practice and thought of its founder Anna Freud, who for over 50 years has been at the forefront of this controversial field. Children are the most refractory of all subjects to treat analytically. Here, for the first time, is a primer on the difficult technique as practiced at the Hampstead Clinic in London, which was founded by Anna Freud and is today the leading child analytic center in the world. She and her colleagues expose their wealth of experience to systematic review, which yields up rich insights not only into child psychoanalysis and psychotherapy but also into basic child development. In addition, their findings have relevance to the understanding of emotional disturbance at all ages. The book follows the treatment situation through all its stages, from the first session to termination and follow-up. It focuses on the interaction between therapist and child in the treatment room, illustrating the points with copious clinical vignettes. One point examined is the structure of treatment with respect to such matters as scheduling sessions and handling interruptions. Another element that comes under scrutiny is the development of the child's relationship to the therapist, which subsumes such factors as establishing an alliance, transference, and resistance. The child's repertoire of expressions, both verbal and nonverbal, is explored, as is the therapist's armamentarium of interpretations and interventions. Woven throughout the description of these elements is incisive commentary by Anna Freud. Her commonsense approach gives the book unique value, lifting it to a rare level of human wisdom.

Book The Psychoanalytic Method

Download or read book The Psychoanalytic Method written by Oskar Pfister and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychoanalytic Method Psychoanalysis originated on a medical basis as a method of treatment for certain nervous maladies which are called functional and in which there is recognized with constantly increasing certainty the result of disturbances of the affectivity. It attains its object of removing the expressions of such disturbances, the symptoms, by presupposing that these symptoms may not be the only possible and final outcome of certain mental processes, and with that in view, exposes the history of the development of the symptoms in the memory, reawakens the processes lying underneath these symptoms and affords them a more favorable outlet under the guidance of the physician. Psychoanalysis has set up the same therapeutic goal as the hypnotic treatment, which, introduced by Liebault and Bernheim, after a long and hard struggle had acquired a place in the technique of neurologists. It goes far deeper, however, into the structure of the mental mechanism and seeks to attain permanent results and lasting changes as its objects. The hypnotic suggestion treatment, in its time, very soon passed the bounds of medical application and established itself in the service of education of young persons. If we may believe the reports, it has proven itself an effective means of overcoming the faults of children, disturbing physical habits and traits of character otherwise incorrigible. No one raised objections at that time or expressed surprise over this extension of its field of usefulness which has become fully intelligible to us only by the aid of psychoanalytic investigation. Book On Freud s Formulations on the Two Principles of Mental Functioning

Download or read book On Freud s Formulations on the Two Principles of Mental Functioning written by Lawrence J. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers by leading contemporary psychoanalysts who comment on the continuing important relevance of Freud's (1911) paper, Formulations on the Two Principles of Mental Functioning. The contributors gathered here represent current European, Latin American, and North American perspectives that elaborate the continuing value of Two Principles for present-day psychoanalytic thinking. Each author examines Freud's paper through a personal lens that is coloured by the psychoanalytic culture from which he or she comes. In each instance, the writers' chapters demonstrate the heuristic value of Two Principles for twenty-first century psychoanalytic theory and technique. A common thread that runs through all the chapters is the view that this brief paper by Freud, which he humbly introduced by stating, "The deficiencies of this short paper, which is preparatory rather than expository ...", is a masterpiece that contains within it the seeds of much of his later writing. The distinction he draws between the pleasure principle and the reality principle are profound and raise questions that still preoccupy analysis today.

Book Psychoanalysis of Freud and Adler Classic Reprint

Download or read book Psychoanalysis of Freud and Adler Classic Reprint written by Francis C. Sumner and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychoanalysis of Freud and Adler logical support which shall herewith be presented. For sake of clearness this evidence may be divided into two categories: 1. The Phylogenetic; 2. The Ontogenetic. I. The Phylogenetic - When the principle of Mendelian inheritance is applied to the evolution of the two sexes the results are significant for the bisexual theory. The so-called male and female of the species have descended from a remote common ancestor in the micro-organic realm. According to Belfield this far off ancestor of the two sexes while hermaphroditic in the main, nevertheless bore more points of similarity to our so-called female than to our so-called male and for that reason he prefers to indicate femaleness as the dominant Mendelian character; maleness as the recessive Mendelian character. From this primitive common parent of the two sexes were evolved the two lines: one in the masculine direction and one in the feminine direction. The respective goals of these two evolving lines are conceived as approximations to absolute masculinity and absolute femininity. After the two sexes were evolved, i. e., after the division into male and female according to the primary sex-character, there recapitulated in each of the two sexes the evolutionary process which had gone on before in the evolution of the two sexes. The masculine line again differentiates itself into the more masculine as recessive line and into a more feminine as dominant line; the feminine line differentiates itself into the more masculine as recessive line and into a more feminine as dominant line. This secondary differentiation deals with secondary, tertiary, etc., sex-characters. A genealogical tree of the evolution of the sexes based on Mendelian inheritance might here serve to clear up the foregoing. Thus far have evolved four great bisexual character-types: 1. The males in whom masculinity predominates (M2). 2. The males in whom femininity predominates (M1). 3. The females in whom masculinity predominates (F2). 4. The females in whom femininity predominates (F1). It is proper here to insert some of the biological evidence for this genealogy of the sex-types. Belfield claims that as the unicellular organisms or protozoa are the most primitive ancestors of man so also their reproductive life is the evolutionary prototype of present-day reproductive life of the higher animals including man. He with Thomson, Geddes and others trace the reproductive life in the following three stages: 1. Asexual reproduction.
