Book Freewill Foreknowledge and Fate

Download or read book Freewill Foreknowledge and Fate written by Edward Search and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freewill, Foreknowledge, and Fate: A Fragment On revisiting Alma Mater Oxoniensis after a long absence, among many noble edifices entirely new to me, I observed an elegant range of chambers at Magdalen, on either end of which there projected two rows of rough stones from top to bottom ready to fasten in with future walls that might be run up against them; and chimnies were worked between for the accommodation of future chambers that might hereafter rise out of the adjacent ground. But as the said adjacent ground was smoothed into a meat parterre, and I saw no preparation for further erections, I could look upon the projector as having designed only to exhibit the fragment of a building. Book The Freedom of the Will Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Freedom of the Will Classic Reprint written by D. D. Whedon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freedom of the Will Any substantial contribution to the most difficult of all psychological and moral problems, the reconciliation of the sense of Responsibility with our intellectual conclusions regarding the nature of Choice, must be a service to a true psychology, a consistent theology, and a rational piety. It can hardly be expected that any single mind will at the present time so solve this problem, even with all the aids his predecessors in the discussion afford, as to leave nothing to his successors to elucidate. Yet the present writer would not offer this treatise to the public did he not believe that even to so ancient a debate he had furnished some new thoughts, and brought the difficulty nearer to a solution. Upon such a subject it is a matter of course that, agreeing or disagreeing, a writer would have something to say of President Edwards. Disagreeing with him fundamentally, the present writer has taken an unequivocal but respectful issue with that great thinker. Whether he has not demonstrated forever the existence of a number of undeniable fallacies in the "Inquiry" on the Will, fallacies that vitiate its most important conclusions, it is for the reader to judge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Will and Destiny Much has been said lately as to the need of a New World and a Change of Heart. This short treatise is intended to throw light. Mainly from a psychological point of view, on the meaning Of these familiar phrases. The method of approach adopted is dynamistic or kinetic, rather than static. That is to say Stress is laid on the fact that all Worlds, like thoughts, are necessarily changing though at different periods the rapidity of the rates Of change varies. There are certain times when current views, opinions, customs and traditions are markedly unstable. The present is cer tainly one Of these times. Conditions Of life are seen to be difficult, and many rush to the conclusion that they never were so before, or not to the same extent. Book The Free Will Problem in Modern Thought Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Free Will Problem in Modern Thought Classic Reprint written by William Hallock Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-27 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free-Will Problem in Modern Thought IT is now some twenty years since Professor James opened his famous address on the Dilemma of Determinism with the remark that he knew of no subject which was less worn out than the free-will controversy. Subsequent events have justified his Opinion, and various circumstances, among which the in uence Of Professor James' polemic is not unim portant, have conspired to bring forward again this world old problem, and make it at the beginning of our century one Of the prime subjects of philosophic discussion. Au thoritative announcements that the free-will doctrine has been shattered by modern science or that the problem has been dropped by modern philosophy have not been wanting, but in the light Of recent discussion these seem, to say the least, premature. The writings of Martineau, Brad ley, Ward and Royce, not to mention Howison, Mallock and the authors of Personal Idealism, give evidence of a deep and widespread philosophical interest, and this interest may, perhaps, excuse the present attempt to show how the prob lem presents itself to the modern scientific and ethical con sciousness. Book Free Will and Human Responsibility

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Will and Human Responsibility: A Philosophical Argument The following monograph grew out of class exercises in my course in philosophy given for a number of years in Dartmouth College. In order to quicken interest by varying the method and to make philosophy touch life, we would sometimes have classroom debates on philosophical subjects by the students under the guidance of the instructor. The main issues in philosophy, because of their two-sided nature, of the uncertainty of their settlement, and of their stimulating effect on both the imagination and the intellect, lend themselves easily to the method of debate, as Plato, the Scholastics, and Bishop Berkeley illustrate. Book The Problem of Human Destiny

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Human Destiny: As Conditioned by Free Will During the session of the Universalist General Convention held in Boston, 1899, an evening was set apart as Interdenominational Evening. The attendance at this congress of the churches was large, and profound interest was manifest. His Excellency, Governor Wolcott, gave an address of welcome; Dr. Francis G. Peabody of Harvard University spoke for the Unitarians, and Dr. Frank O. Hall of New York, for the Universalists. Dr. Lyman Abbott, editor of The Outlook representing the Congregationalists, gave a notable address entitled, "Why I am not a Universalist." This address was printed in full in The Outlook, and later in The Universalist Leader, and immediately called forth a review by Prof. W. G. Tousey of Tufts College, under the caption, "An Open Letter to Dr. Lyman Abbott." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Religion and Free Will

Download or read book Religion and Free Will written by W. Benett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Free Will: A Contribution to the Philosophy of Values We have observed (Asceticism, ad fin.) that, when the end is strength of character, no extreme of self-torture is excessive: and from this statement we are unable to recede. It suggests an examination of the popular conception of goodness as the mean between excess and defect; and we may prepare the way for a more comprehensive treatment of the subject by inquiring how far the principle of the mean will help us to explain the particular concept of justice. Justice is a good thing. Is it a mean? and, if it is, between the excess and defect of what quality? And we must throughout bear it in mind that a mean between the excess and defect of any one quality, when represented quantitatively, is not the same tiling as the balance between two opposed qualities. A balance between two opposed quantities, however high, or however low they may be, if they are equal, is always zero. Retributive justice has been commended as a protection against the double danger of an excess or defect in the workings of revenge.
