In 1918 he was appointed Admiralty Official Artist, and went out to Mesopotamia and Palestine to do pictures for the Imperial War Museum, which resulted in the making of a good many of the sketches in this book, and also in two other books of which he is both author and artist - The Last Crusade and A Dweller in Mesopotamia. In pre-war days he was a keen yachtsman and traveller, as he has shown in his books The Log of the Grifiin, A Cruise across Europe, and Adventures with a sketch-book.
