Book excerpt: The subject of this collection covers the work of the artist yann beauvais in roughly the last quarter of the 20th century. The years correspond both to his use of the physical medium of photochemical film and his role in the larger history of experimental film in Paris. In the new century yann beauvais moved on both geographically from Paris and artistically into electronic media. But the importance of his activity when he was based in Paris both as an artist in Super 8 and 16mm film and as a champion of other filmmakers through his work as a critic, curator, distributor, and exhibitor, deserves specific attention. He recalled this period with characteristic modesty: There have always been musicians' musicians so I thought maybe I was a filmmakers' filmmaker. I might never have public recognition but other filmmakers might recognize me and realize that, had I not been there, something would have been lacking. The book has two parts: Making Films (1976 - 1997) is a transcription of yann beauvais's spontaneous spoken commentary recorded in 2017 while viewing his film work. It was transcribed and then edited for coherence with his approval. Articles on Film (1979 - 1998) is a translation of the complete text of Poussières d'image published in 1998 by Paris Expèrimental. Certain chapters were originally published separately in English and, in those cases, the original translator is credited. All of the others have been translated for the first time by this book's editor.

Book Reelpolitik Ideologies in American Political Film

Download or read book Reelpolitik Ideologies in American Political Film written by Beverly Merrill Kelley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reelpolitik Ideologies in American Political Film, Beverly Merrill Kelley examines more than a century of political movie history, providing a thorough historical background for diametrically opposed political ideologies in order to facilitate debate and dialectical learning. Kelley explores 185 American political movies (categorized by ideological themes and presented in chronological order) in order to illustrate the history of film as well as the history of the specific political ideology. Each chapter includes a case study which provides an in-depth analysis of the single film that best illustrates the ideology at hand, including: The Candidate (populism), Wall Street (elitism), The Godfather (fascism), All the President's Men (anti-fascism), Patton (interventionism), and M*A*S*H (isolationism). Reelpolitik Ideologies in American Political Film establishes a paradigmatic analysis of political films that details the cyclical nature of ideological dialectic throughout American history and identifies the values, attitudes, and beliefs of the voters who choose not to affiliate with Republicans and Democrats, and who often determine the outcomes of elections. The text also includes an extensive ideological filmology spanning more than 100 years of American cinema. This study represents a bold investigation of the political and social values of American film, and is an essential text in the study of the relationship between culture and politics.

Book Voice and Vision A Creative Approach to Narrative Film and DV Production

Download or read book Voice and Vision A Creative Approach to Narrative Film and DV Production written by Mick Hurbis-Cherrier and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-03-13 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voice & Vision is a comprehensive manual for the independent filmmakers and film students who want a solid grounding in the tools, techniques, and processes of narrative film in order to achieve their artistic vision. This book includes essential and detailed information on relevant film and digital video tools, a thorough overview of the filmmaking stages, and the aesthetic considerations for telling a visual story. The ultimate goal of this book is to help you develop your creative voice while acquiring the solid practical skills and confidence to use it. Unlike many books that privilege raw technical information or the line-producing aspects of production, Voice & Vision places creativity, visual expression, and cinematic ideas front and center. After all, every practical decision a filmmaker makes, like choosing a location, an actor, a film stock, a focal length, a lighting set-up, an edit point, or a sound effect is also an expressive one and should serve the filmmaker's vision. Every decision, from the largest conceptual choices to the smallest practical solutions, has a profound impact on what appears on the screen and how it moves an audience. "In Practice sidebars throughout Voice & Vision connect conceptual, aesthetic and technical issues to their application in the real world. Some provide a brief analysis of a scene or technique from easily rentable films which illustrate how a specific technology or process is used to support a conceptual, narrative, or aesthetic choice. Others recount common production challenges encountered on real student and professional shoots which will inspire you to be innovative and resourceful when you are solving your own filmmaking challenges.
