Book Degeneration of algebraic hypersurfaces and applications to moduli problems

Download or read book Degeneration of algebraic hypersurfaces and applications to moduli problems written by Marco Manetti and published by Edizioni della Normale. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important question concerning algebraic geometry and differential topology is the so-called def=diff? problem: are two complex structures on a closed compact differentiable 2n-manifold deformation of each other? In the case n=1 it is a classical result that the answer is yes, while in case n=2 the above question (Friedman-Morgan conjecture) has a positive answer in some cases, but in general is still unsolved. If we restrict to minimal algebraic surfaces of general type the above question can be interpreted in terms of properties of the moduli space of surfaces of general type. The main goal of this thesis is to study the general connectedness properties of moduli spaces of surfaces of general type and to construct some algebraic manifolds with the same underlying manifold structure that cannot be continuously deformed one in the other.

Book Degeneration of Abelian Varieties

Download or read book Degeneration of Abelian Varieties written by Gerd Faltings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and complete treatment of semi-abelian degenerations of abelian varieties, and their application to the construction of arithmetic compactifications of Siegel moduli space, with most of the results being published for the first time. Highlights of the book include a classification of semi-abelian schemes, construction of the toroidal and the minimal compactification over the integers, heights for abelian varieties over number fields, and Eichler integrals in several variables, together with a new approach to Siegel modular forms. A valuable source of reference for researchers and graduate students interested in algebraic geometry, Shimura varieties or diophantine geometry.

Book Real Enriques Surfaces

Download or read book Real Enriques Surfaces written by Alexander Degtyarev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-05-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first attempt of a systematic study of real Enriques surfaces culminating in their classification up to deformation. Simple explicit topological invariants are elaborated for identifying the deformation classes of real Enriques surfaces. Some of theses are new and can be applied to other classes of surfaces or higher-dimensional varieties. Intended for researchers and graduate students in real algebraic geometry it may also interest others who want to become familiar with the field and its techniques. The study relies on topology of involutions, arithmetics of integral quadratic forms, algebraic geometry of surfaces, and the hyperkähler structure of K3-surfaces. A comprehensive summary of the necessary results and techniques from each of these fields is included. Some results are developed further, e.g., a detailed study of lattices with a pair of commuting involutions and a certain class of rational complex surfaces.

Book Ramified Surfaces

  • Author : Michael Friedman
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2022-09-26

Download or read book Ramified Surfaces written by Michael Friedman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers an extensive study on the convoluted history of the research of algebraic surfaces, focusing for the first time on one of its characterizing curves: the branch curve. Starting with separate beginnings during the 19th century with descriptive geometry as well as knot theory, the book focuses on the 20th century, covering the rise of the Italian school of algebraic geometry between the 1900s till the 1930s (with Federigo Enriques, Oscar Zariski and Beniamino Segre, among others), the decline of its classical approach during the 1940s and the 1950s (with Oscar Chisini and his students), and the emergence of new approaches with Boris Moishezon’s program of braid monodromy factorization. By focusing on how the research on one specific curve changed during the 20th century, the author provides insights concerning the dynamics of epistemic objects and configurations of mathematical research. It is in this sense that the book offers to take the branch curve as a cross-section through the history of algebraic geometry of the 20th century, considering this curve as an intersection of several research approaches and methods. Researchers in the history of science and of mathematics as well as mathematicians will certainly find this book interesting and appealing, contributing to the growing research on the history of algebraic geometry and its changing images.
