Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Copyright Design in Art and Manufactures Property in form, distinct from that of the material substance or article in which it was exhibited, was, till within a few centuries, quite unknown. It has of late years attracted much notice, various arts having facilitated the multiplication of copies, and Government has paid attention not merely to the legal protection of Design, but to its encouragement by schools of art, museums, &c. while it is not only patronized but practised by Royalty itself. Legally the subject has generally been treated of as an appendix to or variation of literary copyright, or of patents. It has, however, an independent character distinct from either of these. 1. In literature ideas are expressed by letters representing vocal sounds; the shape of the black marks, dots or strokes on the paper being immaterial. But in an engraving or a pattern, these are the language of the author, and subject of the right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Design in Jewellery and Fans Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Design in Jewellery and Fans Classic Reprint written by Charles Holme and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Design in Jewellery and Fans IT is in the thorough belief of the soundness or these principles that the Editor has selected a number of representative modern examples of design by British and Continental workers, which, from their beauty and freshness of treatment, bear testimony to the great advance that has recently been made in the right understanding and rendering of the jeweller's and fan-maker's arts. If articles of good taste are to be produced, there must be a demand for them. So long as a public is to be found that will purchase trinketry in imitation of wheel barrows, cocks and hens, flower-pots, and moons and stars, so long will the advance in art be retarded. The Editor has pleasure in acknowledging the courtesy of the Owners of copyrights for their kindness in sanctioning the reproduction of important work; and his best thanks are due to all the artist-contributors, and especially to those who have made designs expressly for this publication. Book Design and Tradition

Download or read book Design and Tradition written by Amor Fenn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design and Tradition: A Short Account of the Principles and Historic Development of Architecture and the Applied Arts As a result of this more general appreciation the professional services of the artist are necessarily in greater request, thus affording a sphere of work not only lucrative but temperamentally attractive. At the present time the facilities available to the prospective artist are considerably greater than at any previous period. In every district and important centre, there are schools specialising in the Arts and Crafts, giving opportunities for training at fees that are purely nominal. Most of these deal with the various phases of artistic expression on logical and sound lines, but the knowledge and experience essential to a successful artistic career is invariably acquired in professional work to which the art school training is preparatory. Book Theory and Practice of Design

Download or read book Theory and Practice of Design written by Frank G. Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Design: An Advanced Text-Book on Decorative Art The kind way in which a former book of mine, "Lessons on Decorative Design," was received by critics, teachers, and students, has led me to yield to a widely expressed desire that I should write a more advanced work on the same subject. Hence the present volume, which, I trust, may be of service to those for whom it is specially designed. Like the previous volume, it does not pretend to be a book of designs, but a book on design - not a picture book, but a school text-book. The illustrations and diagrams have been selected and designed with the view of explaining principles and directing practice. Many of them are reproductions of impromptu sketches drawn on the blackboard while lecturing to my classes. Throughout the work I have insisted on the observance of principles, regard for construction, and the law of development. Book excerpt: From typographic illustrator Marian Bantjes, I Wonder will make you think in new ways about art, design, beauty, and popular culture. This unique presentation features the elaborately crafted word pictures of Marian Bantjes, the most inventive and creative typographic illustrator of our time. Whether intricately hand-drawn or using computer illustration software, Bantjes's work crosses the boundaries of time, style, and technology. There is, however, another side to Bantjes's visual work: her thoughtful treatises on art, design, beauty, and popular culture that add a deeper dimension to the decorative nature of her best-known work. These reflections cover the cult of Santa, road-side advertising, photography and memory, the alphabet's letterforms, heraldry, and stars. Bantjes's writing style ranges from the playful to the confrontational, but it is always imbued with perspicacity, insight, and a sense of fun. Intended to inspire creatives of any persuasion, this is more than a collection of ideas: Bantjes has meticulously illustrated every page of the book in her inimitable style to create an accessible work of art that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Quirky, poignant, astute, funny--this beautiful book presents a compelling collection of observations on visual culture and design. In Stefan Sagmeister's telling words, Bantjes's work is his "favorite example of beauty facilitating the communication of meaning." This paperback edition is expanded with a new essay from the author.

Book Visual Rhetoric and the Eloquence of Design

Download or read book Visual Rhetoric and the Eloquence of Design written by Leslie Atzmon and published by Parlor Press LLC. This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in VISUAL RHETORIC AND THE ELOQUENCE OF DESIGN foreground the rhetorical functions of design artifacts. Rhetoric, normally understood as verbal or visual messages that have a tactical persuasive objective—a speech that wants to convince us to vote for someone, or an ad that tries to persuade us to buy a particular product—becomes in Visual Rhetoric and the Eloquence of Design the persuasive use of a broad set of meta-beliefs. Designed objects are particularly effective at this second level of persuasion because they offer audiences communicative data that reflect, and also orchestrate, a potentially broad array of cultural concerns. Persuasion entails both the aesthetic form and material composition of any object.

Download or read book The Copyright Design Interface written by Estelle Derclaye and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting designs is complex and diverse; it involves deciding whether to protect them by design law, copyright law, or by both laws. A single protection may be under- or overprotective but two or more can be overprotective if there are no rules regulating the overlap. Legal systems in Europe and abroad have struggled to find the most adequate solution to this problem. This book traces the history of the design/copyright interface of fifteen countries, selected for their diversity in the way they dealt with the interface. It examines how these countries have coped with the problems engendered by the interface, the rules they applied to it over time and the reasons for legislative changes. This analysis reveals the most appropriate rules to regulate the interface at EU and global level and will appeal to academics, practising lawyers, judges, students and policymakers all over the world.
