Book excerpt: Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort - but if it is overcome, change can come quickly. In Switch, the Heaths show how everyday people - employees and managers, parents and nurses - have united both minds and, as a result, achieved dramatic results: • The lowly medical interns who managed to defeat an entrenched, decades-old medical practice that was endangering patients • The home-organizing guru who developed a simple technique for overcoming the dread of housekeeping • The manager who transformed a lackadaisical customer-support team into service zealots by removing a standard tool of customer service In a compelling, story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline.

Book Managing the impact of changes in the value of the euro on EU funds

Download or read book Managing the impact of changes in the value of the euro on EU funds written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Audit Office believes more could be done to manage the risk of a reduction in the value of EU funds to the UK in the event of a depreciation in the euro. The UK Government receives around £5 billion from the European Union each year to fund EU programmes in the UK. However, the relative value of the pound and the euro varies significantly, with the exchange rate fluctuating by up to 14 per cent in a single month. A 14 per cent change can lead to an increase or decrease of £700 million in the sterling value of funds provided by the EU if the exchange rate holds at that level. The use of forward contracts (a form of hedging where the department and a commercial bank agree an exchange rate in advance) has helped reduce the potential funds exposed to a fall in value from £8.5 billion to £2.4 billion in 2009-10. However wider use of hedging could reduce still further the amount of taxpayer funds at risk. Each department managing EU funds works in isolation on developing its policy. Such an arrangement is not cost effective. These departments would benefit from more detailed guidance from HM Treasury in this area, and from developing more pooled expertise to reduce duplication of effort. Government bodies require considerable expertise and support to ensure the most appropriate and cost-effective hedging arrangements are put in place.

Book Oversight Hearings on Meal Pattern Changes in the School Lunch Program

Download or read book Oversight Hearings on Meal Pattern Changes in the School Lunch Program written by United States. Congress. House. Committee on Education and Labor. Subcommittee on Elementary, Secondary, and Vocational Education and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In 1981, the USDA proposed changes in meal pattern requirements (in effect since 1946) for the school lunch program. The regulations proposed a decrease in: the amount of protein-rich foods (to one and one/half ounces); fruits or vegetables (to one/half cup); bread (to 1 serving); and milk (to 6 ounces for elementary children). The wisdom of the proposal was questioned by subcommittee Chairman Perkins who believes it will deprive children of nutrients needed for growth, health, and well-being. Interested parties voiced their concerns either for or against the proposals. Statements were received from advocacy groups, food service directors, USDA officials, nutrition experts, parents, and professional organizations. Food consumption surveys, food and nutrition intake studies, and studies of foods eaten away from home were cited. (kbc).

Book Impact of Climate Changes on Marine Environments

Download or read book Impact of Climate Changes on Marine Environments written by Tymon Zielinski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the current discussion on global environmental changes by discussing modifications in marine ecosystems related to global climate changes. In marine ecosystems, rising atmospheric CO2 and climate changes are associated with shifts in temperature, circulation, stratification, nutrient input, oxygen concentration and ocean acidification, which have significant biological effects on a regional and global scale. Knowing how these changes affect the distribution and abundance of plankton in the ocean currents is crucial to our understanding of how climate change impacts the marine environment. Ocean temperatures, weather and climatic changes greatly influence the amount and location of nutrients in the water column. If temperatures and currents change, the plankton production cycle may not coincide with the reproduction cycle of fish. The above changes are closely related to the changes in radiative forcing, which initiate feedback mechanisms like changes in surface temperature, circulation, and atmospheric chemistry.

Book How Change Happens

Download or read book How Change Happens written by Cass R. Sunstein and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “illuminating” book that “puts norms at the center of how we thinking about change”, revealing the different ways social change occurs—for readers of Freakonomics and Thinking, Fast and Slow (The New York Times) How does social change happen? When do social movements take off? Sexual harassment was once something that women had to endure; now a movement has risen up against it. White nationalist sentiments, on the other hand, were largely kept out of mainstream discourse; now there is no shortage of media outlets for them. In this book, with the help of behavioral economics, psychology, and other fields, Cass Sunstein casts a bright new light on how change happens. Sunstein focuses on the crucial role of social norms—and on their frequent collapse. When norms lead people to silence themselves, even an unpopular status quo can persist. Then one day, someone challenges the norm—a child who exclaims that the emperor has no clothes; a woman who says “me too.” Sometimes suppressed outrage is unleashed, and long-standing practices fall. Sometimes change is more gradual, as “nudges” help produce new and different decisions—apps that count calories; texted reminders of deadlines; automatic enrollment in green energy or pension plans. Sunstein explores what kinds of nudges are effective and shows why nudges sometimes give way to bans and mandates. Finally, he considers social divisions, social cascades, and “partyism,” when identification with a political party creates a strong bias against all members of an opposing party—which can both fuel and block social change.
