Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Certain Methods of the Rambler and the Home and Foreign Review: A Second Letter to the Clergy of the Diocese of Birmingham Man, then, qua animal, was to follow the progressive law of the animal creation; but qua more than animal, as rational being, as a being made for the supernatural, he was not less gradually to discover in the course of generations the existence and the destiny of his soul. His creation was a miracle: it can hardly be called a separate wonder if his higher nature was from the first brought out by an abnormal method into prominence, in order that there might be no possibility of mistake concerning it. He had the supernatural gift, to shew him what his nature was intended for; then he was allowed to lapse into the mere animal condition, in order that it might redound to the glory of God of such stones to raise up suc cessors to the fallen cherubim. In after ages, all religion, all culture, and all civilization, were founded on the tradition of this state, and were the organized endeavours of man to recall the golden age. Book Handbook of Catholic Dogmatics 1 1

Download or read book Handbook of Catholic Dogmatics 1 1 written by Matthias Joseph Scheeben and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where and how do we encounter God’s revelation made once for-all in Christ Jesus? The answer to this urgent question is explored in Matthias Joseph Scheeben’s Handbook of Catholic Dogmatics, Book One: Theological Epistemology, Part One: The Objective Principles of Theological Knowledge, here translated for the first time in English by Michael J. Miller. Scheeben (1835–1888), a renowned German theologian, in this unabridged first part of a two-volume set, begins with a discussion of the nature and scope of dogmatic theology as a science. He treats divine revelation as the source of theological knowledge and as transmitted in Scripture and in the Apostolic Tradition. Included in this volume is Scheeben’s treatise, “The Objective Principles of Theological Knowledge.” Scheeben writes on faith in its source, contents, and handing on in the Church as it confronts the believer, eliciting his or her assent.

Book Romance and System The Theological Synthesis of Matthias Joseph Scheeben

Download or read book Romance and System The Theological Synthesis of Matthias Joseph Scheeben written by Aidan Nichols, OP and published by Emmaus Academic. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Pope Benedict XVI, writing in 1988 as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, described Matthias Joseph Scheeben’s theology as justly praised, but rather less read. My modest hope, through this entirely straightforward study, is to encourage some more—in a phrase Scheeben would relish—ecclesially fruitful reading of him in the English-speaking world.”—From the Author’s Preface Romance and System: The Theological Synthesis of Matthias Joseph Scheeben by Aidan Nichols, OP, is a comprehensive introduction to one of the most significant dogmatic theologians of recent centuries. Exploring the vigor, coherence, and beauty of Scheeben’s theological vision, Nichols concludes that the great German theologian’s work combines “romance and system”: a lyrical appeal to the imagination and a virile challenge to the intellect, the inspiration of metaphor and the conceptual power of an architectonic account of the revelation carried by the Church. Romance and System examines the major themes of Scheeben’s works and underscores their preeminence in Catholic dogmatic theology.

Book The Correspondence of Lord Acton and Richard Simpson Volume 3

This book was released on 1975-07-10 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Acton (1834-1902) and Richard Simpson (1820-76) were the principal figures in the Liberal Catholic movement of nineteenth-century England, an ultimately unsuccessful effort to reconcile the Roman Catholic Church with the leading secular thought of the day. They collaborated in editing the Rambler (1858-62) and the Home and Foreign Review (1862-4), two of the most distinguished Catholic periodicals of the period. The correspondence is the record of this collaboration and sheds light on the religious, political and intellectual history of mid-nineteenth-century England. Though heaviest for the years of their joint work on the Rambler and the Home and Foreign Review, the correspondence continued up to 1875, a year before Simpson's death.
