Book The Structure of Spherical Diffusion Flames in Microgravity

Download or read book The Structure of Spherical Diffusion Flames in Microgravity written by Kristine Renee Mills and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assuming that the activation energy is large, we develop an asymptotic theory that treats the flame as a surface, on either side of which the chemical reaction rate is negligibly small. By examining the flame structure, we derive an explicit dependence of the combustion parameters on the flame temperature and reactants' leakage through the flame. A new element of this work is that the Lewis numbers associated with the fuel and oxidant are kept arbitrary, and that additional factors influencing the flame structure are included.

Book Microgravity Combustion

Download or read book Microgravity Combustion written by Howard D. Ross and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-09-03 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to understanding combustion, the burning of a substance that produces heat and often light, in microgravity environments-i.e., environments with very low gravity such as outer space. Readers are presented with a compilation of worldwide findings from fifteen years of research and experimental tests in various low-gravity environments, including drop towers, aircraft, and space.Microgravity Combustion is unique in that no other book reviews low- gravity combustion research in such a comprehensive manner. It provides an excellent introduction for those researching in the fields of combustion, aerospace, and fluid and thermal sciences.* An introduction to the progress made in understanding combustion in a microgravity environment* Experimental, theoretical and computational findings of current combustion research* Tutorial concepts, such as scaling analysis* Worldwide microgravity research findings

Book Buoyant Low Stretch Stagnation Point Diffusion Flames Over a Solid Fuel

Download or read book Buoyant Low Stretch Stagnation Point Diffusion Flames Over a Solid Fuel written by Sandra Lee Olson and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on the flame structure and extinction characteristics of diffusion flames in microgravity. A normal gravity low-stretch diffusion flame is generated by means of a cylindrical PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) sample of varying large radii. Solid-phase conductive heat loss is varied by modifying the back surface boundary conditions on the samples. Burning rates, flame thickness and standoff distance, temperature profiles in the solid and gas, and radiative loss from the system are measured.

Book Lectures on Mathematical Combustion Lecture 9 Spherical Diffusion Flames

Download or read book Lectures on Mathematical Combustion Lecture 9 Spherical Diffusion Flames written by J. D. Buckmaster and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law has shown that the analysis of spherical diffusion flames is quite similar to that of counterflow diffusion flames, so that some explanation is needed for devoting a separate lecture to them. There are two good reasons. First, the constant-density approximation has been used throughout these lectures in discussing all but plane flames, so there is room for a problem which does not neglect variations in density. (Plane diffusion flames have to be chambered, i.e. the reactants must be supplied at finite locations, which leads to distracting complications). Secondly, the spherical diffusion flame can lead to quite different (and unusual) responses. These arise in the technologically important application to the quasi-steady phase of fuel-drop burning, when a more realistic boundary condition than the conventional one is used. (Author).

Book An Investigation of Axisymmetric Buoyant Turbulent Diffusion Flames

Download or read book An Investigation of Axisymmetric Buoyant Turbulent Diffusion Flames written by S-M. Jeng and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation considered measurements of the structure of axisymmetric, buoyant, turbulent diffusion flames in still air. Profiles of mean temperature, mean velocity, velocity fluctuations and total radiant heat flux were completed for methane flames, including careful characterization of burner exit conditions, in order to provide data for the evaluation of models of the process. Preliminary tests also provided mean temperature profiles for propane flames. Test conditions were chosen so that the flow was turbulent near the burner exit while effects of buoyancy were significant over most of the luminous portion of the flames. Both the present measurements and those of other investigators were compared with predictions of a k-E-g differential model, which included effects of buoyancy in the transport equations for turbulence quantities. The results indicated anisotropic effects in regions where buoyancy dominates flow properties suggesting the eventual desirability of multi-stress models for buoyant flames, although extensive recalibration of model constants from a limited data based would be required if this step were taken. Additional measurements and analysis of methane flames are in progress, in order to investigate the flame radiation properties and provide additional data on turbulence properties needed for model development.
