Book Viscoelastic Modeling for Structural Analysis

Download or read book Viscoelastic Modeling for Structural Analysis written by Jean Salençon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of viscoelasticity has been built up as a mechanical framework for modeling important aspects of the delayed behavior of a wide range of materials. This book, primarily intended for civil and mechanical engineering students, is devoted specifically to linear viscoelastic behavior within the small perturbation framework. The fundamental concepts of viscoelastic behavior are first presented from the phenomenological viewpoint of the basic creep and relaxation tests within the simple one-dimensional framework. The linearity and non-ageing hypotheses are introduced successively, with the corresponding expressions of the constitutive law in the form of Boltzmann’s integral operators and Riemann’s convolution products respectively. Applications to simple quasi-static processes underline the dramatic and potentially catastrophic consequences of not taking viscoelastic delayed behavior properly into account at the design stage. Within the three-dimensional continuum framework, the linear viscoelastic constitutive equation is written using compact mathematical notations and takes material symmetries into account. The general analysis of quasi-static linear viscoelastic processes enhances similarities with, and differences from, their elastic counterparts. Simple typical case studies illustrate the importance of an in-depth physical understanding of the problem at hand prior to its mathematical analysis.

Book On Analysis of Viscoelastic Structures

Download or read book On Analysis of Viscoelastic Structures written by Ju-Eon Kim and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis begins with a comprehensive formulation of continuum-based finite element theory. The theoretical portion concludes with the details of both spatial and temporal discretization, including a discussion of nonlinearity. This study is to understand the effects of nonlinear behavior of structures using a finite element method. The nonlinear behavior equations are derived from equations of motion and constitutive equations. The basic theory is the principle of virtual work. In particular, large displacement problems and visco-elastic problems remain a challenging engineering problems today. The viscoelastic problems depend on the relaxation function which is the source of material nonlinearities. Keywords: Viscoelastic structures problems.

Book Viscoelasticity Basic Theory and Applications to Concrete Structures

Download or read book Viscoelasticity Basic Theory and Applications to Concrete Structures written by Guillermo J. Creus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains notes for a one-semester graduate course which is an introduction to the study of viscoelasticity and creep of concrete. Emphasis was set on the conceptual aspects rather than on the mathematical or computational refinements. The mathematical structure of viscoelasticity is discussed with some care because it clarifies the basic concepts and has important consequences in computa tional applications. Basic ideas are exemplified using the simplest problems and constitutive models in order to be able to show complete solutions. In the computational applications we have also chosen to present the sim plest situations with the greatest possible detail. It has been the author's experience that once the basic concepts are well understood the students are able to follow the rest of the course more easily and to accede to more advanced literature and applications. Chapters I to III furnish the foundations for the course, that may be expanded in diverse ways. If we are interested in finite elements applications we should look at Chapter IV and then go direct ly to Chapter VII. If we are interested in the simplified analysis of frame structures we should study Chapter VI in detail. Chapter V re views the viscoelastic behavior of concrete and Chapter VIII studies the problem of creep buckling. At the end of each chapter we give se lected references to works that complete and extend the subject matter.

Book Efficient Frequency Response Analysis of Structures with Viscoelastic Materials

Download or read book Efficient Frequency Response Analysis of Structures with Viscoelastic Materials written by Eric Dexter Swenson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of DRVs, which are corrections to approximate solutions of the FRP at select frequencies, is new. Because computing DRVs is very expensive on the FE subspace, we accurately approximate DRVs in a reduced subspace associated with the automated multilevel substructuring (AMLS) method. Also, we attempt to minimize the number of DRVs by computing those that will improve the accuracy of frequency response solutions the most. Overall, the cost of solving FRPs with VEMs can be reduced dramatically by including DRVs in the approximating subspace, because the accuracy obtained using DRVs could only be achieved otherwise by including a much larger number of global eigenvectors in the approximating subspace.

Book Finite Element Analysis of Anisotropic Viscoelastic Composite Structures and Analytical Determination of Optimum Viscoelastic Material Properties

Download or read book Finite Element Analysis of Anisotropic Viscoelastic Composite Structures and Analytical Determination of Optimum Viscoelastic Material Properties written by Sung Yi and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quasi-static linear anisotropic viscoelastic responses of composite structures subjected to mechanical and hygrothermal loads are formulated in terms of finite element algorithms. Laplace and/or Fourier transforms rather than direct time integrations are used in this formulation in order to improve accuracy and to save extensive computational time and storage. The present quasi-static viscoelastic analyses require the same computer memory as is needed for corresponding elastic eigenvalue problems. Bending and stretching of composite plates for which analytical solutions exist are examined in order to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of the present approach. The time dependent displacement fields in the transverse direction for the cross ply and angle ply laminates are calculated and the stacking sequence effects of the laminates are discussed in detail. Creep responses for GY70/339 composite laminates with or without a circular hole are also studied. The numerical results compare favorably with analytical solutions, i.e. within 1.8% for bending and 10$sp{-3}$% for tension. Numerical procedures for analyzing dynamic responses of composite structures with time, temperature and moisture dependent linear viscoelastic damping also have been developed in the time domain using variational principles and the Newmark average acceleration method. Recursion formulas have been formulated in order to reduce computer storage and only the previous time solution is required to compute the next time solution. Verification studies were conducted to evaluate the accuracy and convergence of the present numerical algorithm and they show that the numerical solutions agree well with the analytical ones. As examples, the dynamic transient responses of long cantilevered T300/934 composite Euler beams subjected to unit step and impulse loads were calculated using the presently developed procedures. By using generalized Maxwell models, expressions for stored and dissipated energies in anisotropic viscoelastic bodies are derived. The relaxation modulus curves are analytically generated for parameters such as the initial modulus, the fully relaxed equilibrium modulus, the slope of the transition region and the time span of the relaxation. The influences of relaxation modulus shapes and parameters on stored and dissipated energies under specific loads are then analyzed. By using the present finite element methods, the dynamic transient response of cantilever beams with free damping layers on both sides is calculated in order to evaluate performance of free layer damping treatments.

Book Research and Development Needs in Finite Element Analysis of Viscoelasticity Damped Structures

Download or read book Research and Development Needs in Finite Element Analysis of Viscoelasticity Damped Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibration control in structures by means of viscoelastic damping material has gained wide acceptance, particularly in the aerospace industry. Significant weight, cost, performance, and reliability payoffs are possible in situations where resonant vibration cannot be avoided. Numerous examples of damping by constrained or unconstrained layers of viscoelastic material have appeared in the literature. However, the analysis of general structures to predict the damping due to an integral or add-on layered treatment or lumped viscoelastic elements is by no means a routine activity. The key to effective use of the well-developed technology of damping materials-will be a parallel improvement in analytical capability. It will be necessary to make reliable and timely predictions of the system damping which can be expected when a given viscoelastic material is incorporated into a given structural configuration. It must also be possible for working engineers to produce these answers in a project environment using widely available analysis tools such as computer codes. It is natural to look to finite element methods for damping predictions of general damped structures, just as they are used for routine calculation of the dynamic properties of undamped systems. Considerable work has already been done in this area, primarily aimed at prediction of damped response of simple structural elements such as sandwich beams, plates, etc. As participants in this work, it has been the authors' experience that current finite element tools show-much promise for analysis of structures which include viscoelastic damping material. However as with any emerging technology, there are specific questions, both theoretical and practical, which must be investigated and resolved in order to produce a reliable and useful design tool. The purpose of this paper is to describe the problem areas which, in the authors' view, must be addressed in the near term.
