Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Active Service: Ideals of Canada's Fighting Men Great britain was reluctantly compelled to declare war on Germany in order to keep her treaty obligations with Belgium, and also to maintain her national freedom. Germany was inspired by ambitions which menaced our liberties. They imagined that they were the Supermen and that their mission in life was to dominate the world and propagate their Kultur. Great Britain, realising the stupendous struggle before her, called for volunteers, and the loyal sons of the Empire nobly responded to the call of duty, and nowhere more fully than in Canada. The flower and chivalry of Canadian manhood rushed to arms to fight for freedom, and for those great principles for which our fathers were willing to die. Canada may well be proud of her gallant sons. They are brave in battle, patient when wounded, and chivalrous to a fallen foe. They have certainly made good in France and Flanders and have won undying fame at St. Julien. St. Julien - write that word In the blood of the noble dead! Of the men who came at duty's call, And bravely fought and bled. They were loyal young Canadians, Yes, a brave heroic band; Who died for King and country, And the honour of the land. Book The Canadian Experience of the Great War

Download or read book The Canadian Experience of the Great War written by Brian Douglas Tennyson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the United States did not enter the First World War until April 1917, Canada enlisted the moment Great Britain engaged in the conflict in August 1914. The Canadian contribution was great, as more than 600,000 men and women served in the war effort--400,000 of them overseas--out of a population of 8 million. More than 150,000 were wounded and nearly 67,000 gave their lives. The war was a pivotal turning point in the history of the modern world, and its mindless slaughter shattered a generation and destroyed seemingly secure values. The literature that the First World War generated, and continues to generate so many years later, is enormous and addresses a multitude of cultural and social matters in the history of Canada and the war itself. Although many scholars have brilliantly analyzed the literature of the war, little has been done to catalog the writings of ordinary participants: men and women who served in the war and wrote about it but are not included among well-known poets, novelists, and memoirists. Indeed, we don't even know how many titles these people published, nor do we know how many more titles were added later by relatives who considered the recollections or collected letters worthy of publication. Brian Douglas Tennyson's The Canadian Experience of the Great War: A Guide to Memoirs is the first attempt to identify all of the published accounts of First World War experiences by Canadian veterans.

Book Padres in No Man s Land Second Edition

Download or read book Padres in No Man s Land Second Edition written by Duff Crerar and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Padres in No Man's Land is the compelling story of brave and deeply committed army chaplains who brought faith and courage to Canada's troops during one of history's most devastating wars. Tracing the growth of the Canadian Chaplain Service from its chaotic and controversy-ridden early days to its maturation as an efficient field force, Duff Crerar highlights both the role of the Service on the battlefield and the personal experiences of the chaplains. Refuting the widely held view that chaplains serving overseas were cloistered from front-line realities, Crerar describes the padres' experiences in camps, hospitals, and on the battlefield. He examines how they maintained their faith in the face of death and destruction, and explores the bonds forged between chaplains and troops. Padres in No Man's Land concludes in the postwar era with the decline of the chaplains' hopes for spiritual renewal upon their return to Canada - their dreams dashed not by the war, but by the subsequent peace.

Book Mothers of Heroes Mothers of Martyrs

Download or read book Mothers of Heroes Mothers of Martyrs written by Suzanne Evans and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2007 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suzanne Evans finds commonalities between the many images of war mothers - the Canadian Silver Cross mother, the ancient Jewish Maccabean mother of seven martyred sons, the mother of a Palestinian suicide bomber. She compares the lore about mothers of martyrs in the Judeo-Christian, Muslim, and Sikh traditions with stories of World War I Canadian mothers who were depicted in the media as having sacrificed their sons for the sake of civilization, justice, freedom, and God. After the war these mothers were honoured with the Silver Cross medal. Evans argues that, like the mothers of past martyrs, the image of the war-supportive mother in Canada had a powerful influence over public opinion and drew supporters to the cause.
