Book excerpt: "The author makes an eloquent plea for marine biodiversity conservation."—Library Journal "Harvell seems to channel the devotion that motivated the Blaschkas."—The Guardian Winner of the 2016 National Outdoor Book Award, Environment Category It started with a glass octopus. Dusty, broken, and all but forgotten, it caught Drew Harvell’s eye. Fashioned in intricate detail by the father-son glassmaking team of Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, the octopus belonged to a menagerie of unusual marine creatures that had been packed away for decades in a storage unit. More than 150 years earlier, the Blaschkas had been captivated by marine invertebrates and spun their likenesses into glass, documenting the life of oceans untouched by climate change and human impacts. Inspired by the Blaschkas’ uncanny replicas, Harvell set out in search of their living counterparts. In A Sea of Glass, she recounts this journey of a lifetime, taking readers along as she dives beneath the ocean's surface to a rarely seen world, revealing the surprising and unusual biology of some of the most ancient animals on the tree of life. On the way, we glimpse a century of change in our ocean ecosystems and learn which of the living matches for the Blaschkas’ creations are, indeed, as fragile as glass. Drew Harvell and the Blaschka menagerie are the subjects of the documentary Fragile Legacy, which won the Best Short Film award at the 2015 Blue Ocean Film Festival & Conservation Summit. Book A Sea of Glass Mingled with Fire

Download or read book A Sea of Glass Mingled with Fire written by Barry S. Ross and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the sky should become a sea of glass mingled with fire, will you be ready? The sea of glass mingled with fire is symbolic to the holiness of God in wrath. The apostle John according to his revelation envisiond within the spirit of his mind, while he was in the Spirit on the Lord's day (the day in which the ultimate wrath of God will be poured out into the earth by the seven angels having the seven last plagues of Almighty God.) God will pour out his final ultimate plagues on the world of the ungodly in this earth! John in his revelation notes these seven angels with these plagues. Then the apostle envision the people of God as it were, "Standing by (on in some translations) a sea of glass mingled with fire. They had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his mark, and over his image, and over the number of his name. John saw them holding harps which Almighty God had given them. These redeemed people of God sang the song of Moses, and of the Lamb. As the children of Israel was delived by supernatural means as they crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, they after crossing through the sea, stood by the shore of the red Sea, and saw the Egyptians dead bodies laid out on the shore, after God had poured out his ultimate wrath upon them and had at the same identical time shown his loving mercy on the Israelites, for God fought for them that day as Pharoah and his mighty army persued them into the sea to destroy them. When the children of Israel had gotton to the Red Sea, they found themselves in the midst of an impossible situation: their enemies were all around them and Pharaoh and his army were behind them. They cried out to Moses and to God to deliver them out of a horrific situation of certain death! Moses cried out to God, and God rebuked Moses and instructed him to utilize the rod which was in his hand: Moses instructed the children of Israel to "Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord!" The people of God today are in this same postion spiritually speaking: we are waiting for the supernatural deliverance of Almighty God at the seventh trump of God announcing the coming of our deliverer Jesus Christ: for the trumpet will sound, and the dead in Christ shall rise immortal spirit, and we shall be changed and "Caught Up" together with them in the clouds, "to meet the Lord in the air," and we will forever be with the Lord. In the revelation of the apostle John, he has been projected within the spirit of his mind, by Almighty God, to this future day, shortly ahead of us, wherein the apostle envisions the people of God in their ultimate victory! Jesus will return at the worst time in the history of mankind (WWIII) just prior to the seven angels' pouring out into the earth the seven "last" plagues of Almighty God: the mercy of God, the pureness of God, and the holiness of God is represented by the sea's glass mingled with fire, the fire representing God's wrath mixed also in the sea of glass! My friend, if the sky should become a sea of glass, will you be ready? Jesus have instructed the people of God to remain continually in the state of radiness, "Be ye ready for you know not the day or the hour your Lord will come." Will you be ready?

Unfortunately, with each passing day, sea glass becomes more and more difficult to find, making the hunt more of a challenge to the seeker—especially one with limited experience in sea glass hunting. There are several reasons why the hunt is so important to the sea glass seeker. Some find their Zen moments in the solitude and beauty of the hunt. Some collect to add color to their life. The history, mystery, and discovery of sea glass are also strong forces that draw collectors to shorelines around the world, looking for these pieces of physically and chemically weathered frosted glass. Whatever your reason for wanting to learn about and start your own collection of sea glass, the window for doing so is closing as pieces are becoming more elusive due to a growth in sea glass popularity and a decrease in recent glass bottle production. In The Ultimate Guide to Sea Glass, Beuke provides information that will help first-time seekers start new collections and veteran hunters learn more about their current sets. Beuke shares her experiences in gathering her own collection via photographs of vibrant and rare pieces, as well.

Book excerpt: Old Mrs. Ellison doesn't have much longer to live, and her scheming son Cedric is counting the days until he inherits her fortune. But his plans are upset by the arrival of his niece Varvara, a beautiful and wild young woman from a remote Chinese region known as the 'Sea of Glass', a strange land where wars are fought with crossbows and 'highly damaging curses' and where death may come at any moment in the form of a venomous barking spider. With the aid of a love-struck law student and a bibulous butler, Varvara aims to thwart the wiles of her evil uncle-but events take an unexpected and fatal turn in this unusual story, which is by turns hilarious and macabre. An exquisite blend of comedy, murder mystery, and surreal fantasy, Dennis Parry's masterpiece Sea of Glass (1955) was published to near-universal acclaim and has counted Edward Gorey among its admirers, but sank into an undeserved obscurity following Parry's untimely death a month after publication. This edition features a new introduction by Simon Stern. Parry's novel of possession from beyond the grave, The Survivor (1940), is also available from Valancourt. 'Amazingly original and brilliant' - Illustrated London News 'How well Mr. Parry writes!' - New Statesman 'Preposterous, often wonderfully funny' - The Guardian

From the Hamburg-Amerika Line came the Imperator, Vaterland and Bismarck, which would later find service as Cunard's Berengaria, the U.S. Line's Leviathan, and White Star's Majestic. Book Legend of Sea Glass

Download or read book Legend of Sea Glass written by Trinka Hakes Noble and published by Sleeping Bear Press. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long, long ago there was a time when men did not venture into the deep ocean waters. It was believed that the world was flat and to sail beyond the horizon meant falling off the edge of the earth. So even though they were drawn to and fascinated by the ocean, men feared it. And as men lived their lives above the water, far beyond their view and in the ocean's deepest depths lived mysterious and magical sea creatures, half girl and half fish. These shy, gentle creatures were called mermaids and much loved by the ocean. And when men finally overcame their fear and ventured out to sea, risking disaster and even death, it was the mermaids who came to their rescue. Written by award-winning author Trinka Hakes Noble, this original legend explains the origin of sea glass, attributing it to the tears of mermaids, weeping for lives lost at sea.

Book All the Light We Cannot See

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *NOW A NETFLIX LIMITED SERIES—from producer and director Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) starring Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti* Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, the beloved instant New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review Top 10 Book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris, and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the Resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

Book Sea Glass Treasures from the Tide

Download or read book Sea Glass Treasures from the Tide written by Cindy Bilbao and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We may never find message in a bottle, but most of us have fond memories of collecting beach glass. Let the images captured in Treasures from the Tide bring you back to a simpler time and the joy of discovery. This unique photo keepsake celebrates the simple beauty of found objects. Beaches remind us of simple pleasures—swimming in the surf, building sand castles, and collecting smooth, opalescent beach glass. These once man-made objects, perhaps glass bottles or insulators, were broken, rolled and tumbled by the waves, and smoothed into something completely different, something—almost—natural again. Beach glass is found art. Why we take such pleasure in these bits and pieces of manufactured materials reclaimed by nature may be something to contemplate while enjoying Treasures from the Tide—the author surely has, and she conveys that pleasure in playful, organic sculptures that come to life in the interplay of colors and shapes and their interaction with the sand and surf they came from. The sense of a moment in time captured in these photos is like an insect captured in amber, and, in this book, beach glass becomes just as precious.
