Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In seeking for omens, Natives consult the so-called science of omens or science of the five birds, and are guided by them. Selected omens are always included in native calendars or panchāngams. To the quivering and throbbing of various parts of the body as omens, repeated reference is made in the Hindu classics. Thus, in Kalidāsa's Sakuntala, King Dushyanta says: "This hermitage is tranquil, and yet my arm throbs. Whence can there be any result from this in such a place? But yet the gates of destiny are everywhere." Again, Sakuntala says: "Alas! why does my right eye throb?" to which Gautami replies: "Child, the evil be averted. May the tutelary deities of your husband's family confer happy prospects!" In the Raghuvamsa, the statement occurs that "the son of Paulastya, being greatly incensed, drove an arrow deep into his right arm, which was throbbing, and which, therefore, prognosticated his union with Sīta." A quivering sensation in the right arm is supposed to indicate marriage with a beautiful woman; in the right eye some good luck.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Signs, Omens and Superstitions It is an interesting question as to how the many superstitious beliefs and practices had their begin ning. The origin of most of them is no doubt to be found in man's efforts to explain the phe momena of nature, and in an attempt to propitiate an angry deity and to invite a better fortune. From these sources come many of the absurd notions? Still in vogue among primitive people, which have been handed down in modified form to us. First, to exhibit irrefragable evidence of the real feelings of the mass of the people, and thus enable Europeans to see them as they are. Second, to draw public attention to a great body of excellent vernacular literature, in the hope that other persons, far better qualified for the task than myself, will follow the enquiry and publish critical editions and translations of the great ethical works of the Dravidian Augustan period. It is almost impossible now to obtain' a printed copy of any early Tamil book that has not been systematically corrupted and mutilated, to meet the views of those whose livelihood depends on the rejection by the public of Dravidian literature and its acceptance of the Puranic legends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captain Waltham: A Tale of Southern India The life-like view of society in Southern India, which the reader will find in Captain Waltham, could have been given only by one whom years of residence had familiarized with the whole atmosphere of that most peculiar land. The date of the narrative is a little earlier than the great Sepoy mutiny, (even caste-bound India changes in this changeful age, ) and groups in vivid yet strictly true coloring the Englishman, civil and military, the missionary and the Hindoo. The picture presented is characteristically a Southern Indian one. Had the story been of Bengal, Agra or Bombay, its characters and incidents would have varied with the variation of these widely-separated parts of a vast combination of nations in one mass of nearly two hundred millions of souls. The illustrations, by Davenport, like the text, are true to Indian life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Southern India Classic Reprint

Download or read book Southern India Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern India There is no greater contrast than that which is experienced on leaving the gates of Government House in Madras. The change is felt in the scene and moral atmosphere The park in which the house stands - with its deer, its flowers and shrubs, its peaceful retirement - is exchanged at the very gateway itself for a wide dusty street full of life and noise. The street is bordered by portia trees that bear a pale yellow tulip-shaped blossom. They grow readily and love the sea air; and their bright green foliage is pleasant to look upon; otherwise the portia is not altogether a desirable avenue tree. The banyan and tamarind are more graceful and give a deeper shade. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
