Book The Green Economy in the Gulf

Download or read book The Green Economy in the Gulf written by Mohamed Abdel Raouf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a void in academic and policy-relevant literature on the topic of the green economy in the Arabian Gulf, this edited volume provides a multidisciplinary analysis of the key themes and challenges relating to the green economy in the region, including in the energy and water sectors and the urban environment, as well as with respect to cross-cutting issues, such as labour, intellectual property and South-South cooperation. Over the course of the book, academics and practitioners from various fields demonstrate why transitioning into a ‘green economy’ – a future economy based on environmental sustainability, social equity and improved well-being – is not an option but a necessity for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States. Through chapters covering key economic sectors and cross-cutting issues, the book examines the GCC states’ quest to align their economies and economic development with the imperatives of environmental sustainability and social welfare, and proposes a way forward, based on lessons learned from experiences in the region and beyond. This volume will be of great relevance to scholars and policy makers with an interest in environmental economics and policy.

In a scant four decades, it has become the 6th wealthiest country in the world in terms of per capita GDP and has managed its environment so well that it is now considered to be one of the best in the world. In this remarkable book, Tan Yong Soon authoritatively and objectively analyses how the environmental conditions were radically transformed within this period, and the enabling conditions which made this extraordinary transformation possible. This book will unquestionably make all Singaporeans proud of their environmental achievements, and at the same time enable other countries, both developed and developing, to learn many lessons from a most remarkable success story. Book Sustainability in the Gulf

Download or read book Sustainability in the Gulf written by Elie Azar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability is a topic of great interest today, particularly for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which have witnessed very rapid economic and demographic growth over the past decade. The observed growth has led to unsustainable consumption patterns of vital resources such as water, energy, and food, highlighting the need for an urgent shift towards green growth and sustainable development strategies. Sustainability in the Gulf covers the region’s contemporary development challenges through the lens of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which place sustainability at the centre of the solution to the current environmental, economic, and social imbalances facing GCC countries. The book presents multiple analyses of Gulf-specific sustainability topics, examining the current status, challenges, and opportunities, as well as identifying key lessons learned. Innovative and practical policy recommendations are provided, as well as new conceptual angles to the evolving academic debates on the post-oil era in the Gulf. Through chapters covering sector-related studies, as well as the socio-economic dimensions of the sustainability paradigm, this volume offers valuable insights into current research efforts made by the GCC states, proposing a way forward based on lessons learned. This is a valuable resource for students, academics, and researchers in the areas of Environmental Studies, Political Economy, and Economics of the GCC states.

Book The Blue Economy Handbook of the Indian Ocean Region

Download or read book The Blue Economy Handbook of the Indian Ocean Region written by Attri, V.N. and published by Africa Institute of South Africa. This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As humanity enters the Anthropocene epoch the oceans are more at risk than ever before as a result of the increased exploitation of its resources. The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean in the world comprising 20% of the water on the Earth's surface. The sea lanes in the Indian Ocean are among the busiest in the world with more than 80 percent of global seaborne trade in oil transiting through the Indian Ocean and its vital chokepoints and an estimated 40% of the world's offshore oil production comes from the Indian Ocean. The importance of this region cannot be underestimated and there is no doubt that there are many opportunities for economic growth and job creation presented by the waters washing the shores of the Indian Ocean Rim. In order to ensure a desirable future for humanity it is necessary to make use of the ocean’s resources in a sustainable and responsible manner. Climate change is affecting the Indian Ocean negatively, placing a strain on the ability to ensure food security and damaging the economies of small island states that depend on fisheries and aquaculture for their livelihoods. Increasing ocean temperatures and ocean acidification are taking a toll on ecosystems. This book is the first of its kind, providing fresh insights into the various aspects and impacts of the Blue Economy in the Indian Ocean Region: from shifting paradigms, to an accounting framework, gender dynamics, the law of the sea and renewable energy, this handbook aims at increasing awareness of the Blue Economy in the Indian Ocean Region and to provide evidence to policy-makers in the region to make informed decisions. The contributions are from a mixture of disciplines by scholars and experts from seven countries.

Book Green Economy and Sustainable Development

Download or read book Green Economy and Sustainable Development written by Ibrahim H. Hussney and published by Ibrahim H. Hussney. This book was released on with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green Economy and Sustainable Development Vision, Concept and Applications The current global trend revolves around reevaluating the foundations of development for nations by focusing on the evolving challenges faced by populations. This includes the exacerbation of unemployment, rising poverty rates because of climate change, successive financial crises, and the ensuing food crises. It's a time to confront these crises by reconsidering the fundamental pillars that support economic growth and the developmental policies associated with it across various nations. This unequivocally underscores the imperative to advance concepts related to what it termed the "Green Economy." This is one of the most crucial means to ease the spread of poverty and achieve sustainable development, as per the definition put forth by the United Nations Environment Programme, which states that "the green economy is an economy that leads to the improvement of human well-being and the long-term reduction of inequality, without exposing future generations to important environmental risks and ecological scarcity." The significance of the green economy lies in its essential role in establishing a connection between sustainable development, encompassing economic, social, and environmental facets. It facilitates a positive transition in the requisite processes of production, patterns of consumption, waste, and pollution management. It aids in controlling the reckless utilization of natural resources, energy sources, and the ensuing emissions. The ultimate aim is to transform all these elements into a more efficient and diversified economy, preserving the environment and fostering the creation of dignified employment opportunities for successive generations worldwide. It works towards promoting sustainable trade, curbing the prevalence of poverty, enhancing levels of social justice, and ensuring a fair distribution of income. Several reasons support the adoption of the green economy in sustainable development, especially in emerging economies (developing countries).

Book The Sunken Billions Revisited

Download or read book The Sunken Billions Revisited written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report updates previous studies that measured in economic terms the extent of biological losses attributable to overfishing globally. The new estimates assess these 'sunken billions' at $83 billion annually. The report further shows that a clear path can lead to the recovery of these considerable losses, including through significant reduction in global fishing overcapacity. A breakdown between regions is also included, showing that the effort needed to achieve this reform will not be felt equally throughout the world. While the cost of such reform will likely be high, the expected benefits include an increase in biomass by a factor of 2.7, increase in annual harvests by 13 percent, and a 30-fold increase in annual net benefits accrued to the fisheries sector (from $3 billion to $86 billion annually). This urgent call for action is reinforced by the impacts of climate change on fish stocks and fisheries worldwide.
