Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here You Have My Story vividly describes life on the early Plains in the words of those who came to settle in the rugged region. Originally published by the Nebraska State Historical Society between 1885 and 1919, these stories provide surprisingly accurate recollections of events and life on the Great Plains, with a focus on Nebraska. Many are filled with interactions with Native Americans, from Samuel Allis’s experiences as a missionary to the Pawnees, to Henry Fontenelle’s history of the Omaha Indians, to an account of the Powder River Expedition. Early freighters and cattle drovers share their personal experiences, including the dangers and difficulties of travel, and Nebraska’s state-builders describe the early days of Omaha and the construction of the first state capitol building in Lincoln. Here You Have My Story, edited by Richard E. Jensen, brings to life the struggles and triumphs of early Plains settlement and a time when Nebraska was young.

Book Roadside MBA

Download or read book Roadside MBA written by Michael Mazzeo and published by Business Plus. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this "refreshingly different" high-toned business book, three leading business school professors take to America's back roads in search of offbeat small businesses—enterprises that hold valuable lessons for executives and entrepreneurs everywhere (Bloomberg Businessweek). While playing hooky from a conference in Boston a few years back, three former colleagues from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management hopped in a car and embarked on a life-changing road trip. They pulled into a shoe store in Maine and noticed that the sales help was unusually pushy. After a few questions, they discovered the store had a "secret shopper" program, in which employees would be marked down if they were not sufficiently aggressive with customers. A lightbulb went off. Instead of teaching the tried-and-true case studies involving GE and Microsoft, these three men decided to pull their heads out of their ivory towers and search for insights about product differentiation, pricing, brand management, building a team, and a host of other topics. Why take your cues on employee compensation from Wall Street when you can learn from a Main Street company like Couer D'Alene's best crime-scene cleaner? Want to learn about scaling a business? Come meet Dr. Burris, the flying orthodontist, who operates multiple, profitable practices in rural Arkansas. Spiced with vehicular mishaps and unexpected finds, this is one business book you won't want to miss.

Book The Baby Train and Other Lusty Urban Legends

Download or read book The Baby Train and Other Lusty Urban Legends written by Jan Harold Brunvand and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1994-10-17 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's premier folk detective is back on the case, sniffing out those zany but dubious stories that "really happened" to a friend of your sister's boyfriend's accountant's mechanic. Jan Harold Brunvand—''Mr. Urban Legend" [Smithsonian]—tracks the most fabulous tales making today's cocktail-party circuit and shows why those stories that sound too good to be true probably are too good to be true. The eponymous episode—"The Baby Train"—sheds light on certain predawn activities that have linked unusually high birth rates to the whim of train schedule makers. Other stories offer a revealing peek behind the story of "The Exploding Bra," expose the embarrassing source of "The Hairdresser's Error," resurrect a "Failed Suicide" Buster Keaton would have died for, and show why adults are better off not bringing their comic book fantasies out of the closet. From "Superhero Hijinx" to "The Shocking Videotape" to "The Accidental Cannibal," The Baby Train uncovers the mysteries behind some of the bawdiest, goriest, funniest, most pyrotechnic urban legends yet.

Book A Transplanted Life My Story and Guide on Transplant Success

Download or read book A Transplanted Life My Story and Guide on Transplant Success written by Noah Swanson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age thirteen my world was turned upside down. The summer between my eighth and ninth grade changed my life forever. I went from rarely stepping foot in a doctor's office, to becoming so familiar with them I frequently found myself napping on the exam table. I spent the next several months being passed from one specialist to the next like unidentified matter. However, at age fourteen, I discovered the answer to my failing health: I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. Two years later, after three different hospitals, countless doctors and several surgeries, I was the fortunate recipient of a liver transplant. A Transplanted Life: My Story and Guide on Transplant Success was written for two reasons: to share my story and offer useful, practical advice to patients and parents alike, who are going through a similar experience. Because of the dual purpose, the book is separated into two parts.

Book excerpt: 2021 Nebraska Book Award My Omaha Obsession takes the reader on an idiosyncratic tour through some of Omaha’s neighborhoods, buildings, architecture, and people, celebrating the city’s unusual history. Rather than covering the city’s best-known sites, Miss Cassette is irresistibly drawn to strange little buildings and glorious large homes that don’t exist anymore as well as to stories of Harkert’s Holsum Hamburgers and the Twenties Club. Piecing together the records of buildings and homes and everything interesting that came after, Miss Cassette shares her observations of the property and its significance to Omaha. She scrutinizes land deeds, insurance maps, tax records, and old newspaper articles to uncover a property’s singular story. Through conversations with fellow detectives and history enthusiasts, she guides readers along her path of hunches, personal interests, mishaps, and more. As a longtime resident of Omaha, Miss Cassette is informed by memories of her youth combined with an enduring curiosity about the city’s offbeat relics and remains. Part memoir and part research guide with a healthy dose of colorful wandering, My Omaha Obsession celebrates the historic built environment and searches for the people who shaped early Omaha.

David Paul Eich shares what he learned from several "teachers," whose stories set the bar for those who strive to become outstanding leaders. Readers will meet the teenager whose freedom to smile in the face of death, gives new meaning to a positive attitude; an advertising director who taught the author how to focus on what is, and what is not, "a bad day"; a marketing executive whose unusual approach to fidelity inspired an entire sales force; a father whose "face the wind" philosophy represents an antidote for adversity; a crippled wife and mother that claims her life has been "perfect;" an unbelievable testimonial by a patient who personally gave three hundred health care executives the gift of forgiveness; and the Peace Corps volunteer, who found God in the smiles of two starving children. These role models join several others as they provide the lessons and principles necessary for good men and women to become great leaders.
