He meets Athelstan Bodley Caxton the Word Warden who agrees to allow Oliver's friends to come with him on his next visit. Oliver spends some time in Biblios where he meets some strange people and visits some unusual places. A few days later the children; Lena, Tommy and Oliver and Lena's doll Rose are taken to the library and begin their rite of passage in Biblios. The experience will change their lives forever as they are introduced to books, the world of literature and the importance of words and language. They visit all the wondrous places, the hospital for words, the school for words, the police station etc., and meet the strange characters who inhabit these places and who run the town of Biblios. The children eventually form very close ties with some of the characters; The Bobby of Biblios; PC Peel, the Headmisress; Wilhelmina Primm, the Word Warden; Athelstan Bodley Caxton, the Professor; Sigmund von Rotshcopf, and many more. By the time they return home from their incredible adventure the children have undergone a profound change and have become champions of literacy and correct speaking."
