Download or read book Oliver Hazard Perry and the Battle of Lake Erie Classic Reprint written by James Cooke Mills and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oliver Hazard Perry and the Battle of Lake Erie Who among all true Americans does not cherish the memory of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Grant, and Farragut, and of other patriots, whose deeds of valor and achievements of state have moulded our national progress? Among these patriots was another - the immortal Hero of Erie - upon whom was be stowed all the attributes that give lustre to valorous action and chivalrous self - devotion to the cause of his country; blended with modesty, kindness, courtesy, and With lively sympathies for humanity. To place the deeds and public services of Oliver Hazard Perry before his countrymen, of the present and succeeding generations, in a complete and enduring form, to show his true character, to depict his virtues without concealing his faults, is the purpose of this work. It is not intended to be an eulogy upon him, but a faithful history of the events of his life, so far as they are deemed of interest or of any importance in appreciating his character. If, however, some passages may seem to be unduly laden with praise, it is because the author has found it impossible, after delving into old and authenticated records of a century ago, to give a true account of the short but troubled life of Com modore Perry, without indulging in enthusiasm for the nobility of his character and for the important nature of his public services. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Battle of Lake Erie: A Discourse, Delivered Before the Rhode-Island Historical Society, on the Evening of Monday, February 16, 1852 The Rhode Island Historical Society having requested me to prepare a discourse for this their anniversary public meeting, I have chosen for my subject a history of the Battle of Lake Erie. I have made this choice, first because this battle is a part of rhode-island History, and therefore appropriate to the occasion; secondly, because I could speak of it from personal knowledge and thirdly, because a very inaccurate and perverted account of it has been written and imposed upon the public by the late J. Fenimore Cooper, Esquire. I am aware that this gentleman's mistakes and misrepresentations should have been noticed and corrected before his decease, and my apology for the delay is, that I never saw the pamphlet containing them, nor knew of its existence, until within a few days past, and after commencing this discourse. My aim will be to give an account of the origin of the fleet or squadron on the lake; of its conflict with the British squad ron, of the consequences, immediate and remote, and in conclu sion notice some of Mr. Cooper's erroneous positions and false inferences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Lake Erie: Or Answers to Messrs. Burges, Duer, and Mackenzie It is thus substantially shown that the enemies of Capt. Elliott, first took ground in this controversy; or, at least, it is not proved. As has been asserted, that Capt. Elliot did. On this occasion, several letters were written, by different ofiicers, principally if not all of the Niagara, in justifica tion of the conduct of Capt. Elliott, most of which appeared in the journals of the vicinity of Lake Erie. Capt. Perry took no part against his subordinate, but, on the contrary, in answer to an application from Capt. Elliott, he wrote that officer a letter of the date of Sept. 18th, the battle having been fought on the l0th, expressing his indignation that any rumors to his prejudice should have been in circula tion. There is no reason to think that Capt. Perry, at that time, gave any other opinion in public. This may be termed the first controversy, though, on the part of the ene mies of Capt. Elliott, little was openly promulgated to the world. In a short time, with the exception of a few on the spot, the matter was in a great degree forgotten. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...
