Book THE OLIVE FAIRY BOOK Illustrated Edition

Download or read book THE OLIVE FAIRY BOOK Illustrated Edition written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary volume contains 37 old and forgotten folk and fairy tales including stories like stories Lovely Ilonka, Lucky Luck, The Hairy Man, To Your Good Health! and The Story of the Seven Simons. It also contains Russian, German, French, Icelandic, American (Red) Indian, and other tales from around the world. There was a time when the president of the Folk Lore Society believed it was not acceptable for the editors of the day, in particular Mr Andrew Lang and Mr. Joseph Jacobs, to publish fairy books. Their reply was that they did not see any harm in it, and they were ready to 'put themselves on their country,' and be tried by a jury of children. And so they were proving the President of the FLS wrong. This book also contains many references to fairies. As to whether there are really any fairies or not, is a difficult question. Andrew Lang never saw any himself, but he knew several people who have seen them-in the Highlands-and heard their music. If ever you are near Nether Lochaber, go to the Fairy Hill, and you may hear the music your-self, as grown-up people have done, but you must go on a fine day. If fairies really do not exist, why do so many people believe in them, the world over? The ancient Greeks, the old Egyptians, the Hindus, the Chinese, the Africans and even the Native Americans claim to have seen them and it is unlikely that so many different peoples would have seen and heard them? The Editor cannot say 'good-bye' without advising children, as they pursue their studies, to read The Rose and the Ring, by the late Mr. Thackeray. He believes this book is quite indispensable in every child's library, and parents should be urged to purchase it at the first opportunity, as without it no education is really complete.

The books captured the imagination of British children and later became worldwide bestsellers in the 1880s and 1890s.

Book excerpt: The Olive Fairy Book is a collection of children's fairy tales from all over the world which have been translated into English, edited by Andrew Lang, . There is The Blue Parrot from France, The Comb and the Collar from England, The Thanksgiving of the Wazir, a Punjabi story, Samba the Coward from Sudan, to name but a few. This book presents a wonderful opportunity for readers to take in stories as written by authors from a variety of different cultures and societies. It is also a good demonstration of how similar humans and the stories they tell are, regardless of where in the world the story is being told. Children will delight in hearing these stories of fairies, dragons, warriors, magical animals and beautiful princesses. As with all good fairy tales, the stories presented in this collection are intended to convey a lesson, there is a moral to every story. Though some of these lessons are clearly a product of another time, many still resonate today. Both children and adults will enjoy this light collection of classic stories. While not every tale included in Lang's collection is a homerun, there are enough enjoyable stories contained in The Olive Fairy Book to make this a worthwhile read. With each story being only a few pages long, you are never more than a few page turns away from being transported into an entirely new universe. These characters - young, gay and lesbian Somalis - must navigate the complexities of family, identity and the immigrant experience as they tumble towards freedom. Set in Kenya, Somalia and South London, these stories are imbued with pathos, passion and linguistic playfulness, marking the arrival of a singular new voice in contemporary fiction. Praise for FAIRYTALES FOR LOST CHILDREN: 'Fantastic writing. I am most highly impressed. I've read some of the stories more than once and saw in each of them plenty of talent everywhere - in every sinew and vein.' - NURUDDIN FARAH 'There is nothing more humbling than good writing except when the author is fiercely beautiful and ferociously generous of heart. That Diriye Osman should possess so much talent is only fair in light of his goodness. Read this book.' - MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO -The characters in these fairy tales are displaced in multiple, complicated ways. But Osman's storytelling creates a shelter for them; a warm place which is both real and imaginary, in which they find political, sexual, and ultimately psychic liberation.' - ALISON BECHDEL 'East Africa. South London. Queer. Displaced. Mentally Ill. My excitement over Osman and his writing comes, in part, out of delight at the impossibility of categorisation.' - ELLAH ALLFREY The Telegraph

Book Gender Swapped Fairy Tales

Download or read book Gender Swapped Fairy Tales written by Karrie Fransman and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover a collection of fairy tales unlike the ones you've read before . . . Once upon a time, in the middle of winter, a King sat at a window and sewed. As he sewed and gazed out onto the landscape, he pricked his finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell onto the snow outside. People have been telling fairy tales to their children for hundreds of years. And for almost as long, people have been rewriting those fairy tales - to help their children imagine a world where they are the heroes. Karrie and Jon were reading their child these stories when they hit upon a dilemma, something previous versions of these stories were missing, and so they decided to make one vital change.. They haven't rewritten the stories in this book. They haven't reimagined endings, or reinvented characters. What they have done is switch all the genders. It might not sound like that much of a change, but you'll be dazzled by the world this swap creates - and amazed by the new characters you're about to discover.
