In Louisiana he realized by contrast that there was very little room in America for a man with nothing to do. He only wanted to live. As a natural consequence Of this feeling he had sailed for Europe, and had for a while been charmed by the capacity Of the Older races to do nothing with wonderful, sleepy intentness. And so he was a little disappointed in the romance of life as he lay back in the Old carriage that now crawled up the hill at less than a foot page, the horse impatiently biting at the flies, first on his right shoulder, then on his left. Hulder reflected upon this the double strain in his temperament, this strange desire to take no active part in life, and this hope that something out side him would happen to stimulate that life and make it vivid.
