Book Oldsmobile 1946 1960 Photo Archive

Download or read book Oldsmobile 1946 1960 Photo Archive written by Byron Olsen and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2006-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oldsmobile had long been GM's experimental division, pioneering new engineering and design ideas before they spread to other GM marques. Major ideas pioneered by Olds included the first GM semi-automatic transmission in 1937 and Hydra-matic automatic transmission in 1940. Yet Olds still seemed stodgy in the late forties compared to glamorous sibling Buick, which led Olds in sales. All that changed in 1949 when Olds introduced the first modern high-compression overhead valve engines (with Cadillac), the Rocket V8. Sales boomed in the fifties, helped by dazzling new styling and the industry's first panoramic windshields. All of the great looking Oldsmobiles of this exciting time are presented here in sharp detail with high quality photos from the National Automotive History Collection. Here are the revolutionary first hardtops, and later the first four-door hardtops, Starfires, Fiestas, and concept cars. Here, too, are the less fortunate 1957 and 1958 models, when bad styling decisions caused sales to fall. Oldsmobile would recover and go on to again lead the industry in sales in later years, only to perish for good in the new millennium. Superb photos are tied together with authoritative and informative captions, telling the story of Olds in these nostalgic years.

Book excerpt: This new book highlights General Motors oldest division during some of its most successful and exciting years, 1946 through 1960. When World War II ended in 1945, Buick was champing at the bit to forge ahead in the sales race with its reputation for size, prestige and straight eight cylinder power in every model. By 1954, Buick succeeded in reaching third place in sales, ahead of Plymouth. But after a few heady years among the sales leaders, some unfortunate styling decisions in 1957 and 1958 would topple Buick from the leadership pedestal. Share these heady days of growth and success for an American automotive icon with superb quality original factory photos from the time when Buick was one of America's most popular automobiles. Relive the arrival of 'ventiports', Dynaflow drive, sweep spears of chrome, and all of the other Buick trademarks that became part of the American lexicon.

Book Slingshot Dragsters of the 1960s Photo Archive

Download or read book Slingshot Dragsters of the 1960s Photo Archive written by Lou Hart and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2005-10-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 60s, front-engine dragsters, or slingshots, featured tubular built chassis powered by a variety of power plants, consisting of small-block Chevrolets, Chrysler Hemi's, Ford, Pontiac, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, and Lincoln motors either fueled on Nitro Methane or pump gas. Wheelbases varied from 110 inches in 1962 to over 200 inches in 1969. During the early sixties, racing legend "Big Daddy" Don Garlits ran a series of "Swamp Rat" dragsters which not only dominated the quarter-mile, but many of his creations were made by using experimental aerodynamic parts to give better traction and faster speeds. During a fuel ban from the late 50s to the early 60s, many chassis builders utilized a two-engine power plant to gain more power that was lost due to running pump gas instead of fuel. One of the most popular twin-engine dragsters was the "Fright Train", powered by twin small-block Chevrolets. The dragster was driven by 16-year-old Bob Muraviez who used the alias name of Floyd Lippencott, Jr. to fool his parents who did not approve of his racing. Near the end of the 60s, the Chrysler Hemi came to dominate Top-fuel racing, as it produced tremendous torque and horsepower. These dragsters were the quickest accelerating vehicles in motorsports. Elapsed times in the quarter-mile were ranging from the 8-second bracket in the early 60s to the low 7's late in the decade with speeds over 200 mph.In 1970 at the AHRA Nationals at Lion's Dragstrip (Long Beach, CA), Don Garlits experienced a violent clutch explosion that cut his dragster in two and severed a portion of Don's right foot. After being sidelined for several months, Don returned to racing with an innovative rear-engine, top-fuel dragster, which would eventually spell demise for the front-engine dragsters. Relive the 60s era of the front-engine dragster, nicknamed the slingshot for it's aerodynamic design in crisp high quality color and black and white photos. Enjoy memorable moments from some of the famed drivers that are highlighted throughout this book.

In 1904 Olds was unsatisfied and left the company, which left time to help create the new company bearing his initials, the REO Motor Car Company, in Lansing, Michigan. In 1910, the REO Motor Truck Company began the production of trucks. REOs legendary Speed Wagon led the way with shaft-drive, pneumatic tires, electric starters, and electric lights; features found on all competitive makes. By July 1925, REO Speed Wagon sales, since its introduction, exceeded 125,000. REO sought to create a work environment that stressed "family". A Welfare department existed and a variety of activities were available to employees and their families, including indoor baseball and basketball teams and a REO Rifle Club.
