Book The Words and Music of John Lennon

Download or read book The Words and Music of John Lennon written by Ben Urish and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite John Lennon's immense popularity, little attention has been paid to his work apart from the Beatles. Yet his solo artistry not only illuminates what he gave to the Beatles, but also constitutes a significant contribution to popular music in general. Lennon was able to fuse experiments in technology, instrumentation, lyrics, and musical form into recordings that were both artistically and commercially successful. Few singer-songwriters have been his equal. In this long overdue investigation, authors Ben Urish and Ken Bielen give Lennon's artistry the opportunity to speak for itself. After a brief biographical introduction, chronologically arranged chapters discuss his incredible body of work album-by-album and single-by-single. A discography and annotated bibliography conclude the book. Despite John Lennon's immense popularity, little attention has been paid to the overall efforts of his work apart from the Beatles. Yet his solo artistry not only illuminates what he gave to the Beatles (and what the Beatles experience gave to him), but also constitutes a significant contribution to popular music in general. Lennon was able to fuse experiments in technology, instrumentation, lyrics, and musical form into recordings that were both artistically and commercially successful. Whether expressing emotions, explaining philosophies, protesting social situations, or ruminating on the joys and pains of personal entanglements, few singer-songwriters have been his equal. Although he is often lauded as a spokesperson for his generation, this praise, however intended, is far too limiting. Lennon was able to transform the intensely personal into the deeply universal (as well as the reverse), often with humor and pointed insight. At their core, his songs are simultaneously humanistic and transcendent. And as such, they-and he-continue to be relevant, and will certainly remain a valuable part of our cultural heritage for a long time to come.

Book Tales My Father Told Me

Download or read book Tales My Father Told Me written by E. R. Morris and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original collection of short stories, author E. R. Morris updates classic nursery rhymes and fairytales with a modern, grown-up bent. Written with other adults in mind—especially grandparents—Morris gives these well-worn tales a wry sardonic spin, often asking how they might change if they were set today. Threaded through these mature re-tellings is a constellation of fascinating historical information about their origins. Deftly weaving these facts in with these ironic re-tellings, Morris offers a truly unique collection sure to inspire laughter and eyebrow-raising for the grown-ups familiar with the originals, who might just learn something along the way, too.

Book excerpt: At five foot two, Angel Mahoney finds being a bouncer at a Phoenix nightclub a definite challenge. Trained in the martial arts, she has the edge. Even more of a challenge is working for one of her bosses, James Callahan. Reserved and intimidating, as well as being handsome, Angel had to prove herself capable of the job, since he's not thrilled with having a female bouncer. When malicious pranks start to happen at the nightclub, coinciding with a rash of local jewelry store robberies, Angel is suspected by James of being responsible, at least for the pranks, when she happens to be in the vicinity each time to the storeroom where they originated from. This is thanks, in part, to being sent on errands there by one of the managers, Bob Newsome. It also doesn't help that the secretary of the club, Jannelle Martin, doesn't like her and Angel doesn't know why. When Angel's told to stay away from the storeroom, she asks one of the bartenders to see if he can find any clues to help clear her. He leaves her a note to meet her in the storeroom and on her way to it, she has a confrontation with the manager who'd sent her on the errands. He accuses her of being in love with James Callahan, who he says is seeing Jannelle. Although this shakes her some, when she finds bartender John Mack in the storeroom with a knife in his chest and then Angel is attacked, she pulls it together and decides to starts investigating on her own to find John's killer. What ensues is Angel fighting to clear her name and save her life. Because whoever killed John Mack, not only doesn't want her to find out who his murderer is: they're determined to have Angel to join him.

Book 80s Chart Toppers

  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2012-01-06
  • ISBN : 1780574118
  • Pages : 500 pages

Download or read book 80s Chart Toppers written by Sharon Davis and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The '80s were a decade of musical change. As the '70s disco stranglehold was broken, rock, gay, dance and pop music competed with funk and soul, romantic ballads and political protest, computerised music and controversy. The glamour of costume, greasepaint and cross-dressing was put to good use by New Romantic groups like Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Soft Cell, Culture Club and the Human League, while the world also looked to Britain for the most exciting pop acts such as the multi-million-selling Wham!, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Eurythmics and the Pet Shop Boys. Mainstream dance music was at its peak, spearheaded by Stock, Aitken and Waterman, and their stable of artists, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Rick Astley, were all chart-topping names. From the USA came the artist of the decade, Michael Jackson, while Madonna and Whitney Houston provided the 'Girl Power' of the '80s. The decade also saw the philanthropic side of the music industry as the stars responded to famine in Ethiopia with the charity records 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' and 'We Are The World'. The'80s catered for all musical tastes, no matter how bizarre, and was far more eclectic than any other decade. From bubble-gum pop with Bucks Fizz to the stadium rock of Simple Minds,'80s Chart-Toppers brings a comprehensive year-by-year, month-by-month guide to the hottest sounds of the decade.

Book How Does It Feel

Download or read book How Does It Feel written by Mark Kermode and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Wonderful - such a terrific read. Brilliantly captures the passion, commitment, searing self-knowledge and dizzy happiness that comes with loving music. An enchanting book' STEPHEN FRY *** Following a formative encounter with the British pop movie Slade in Flame in 1975, Mark Kermode decided that musical superstardom was totally attainable. And so, armed with a homemade electric guitar and very little talent, he embarked on an alternative career - a chaotic journey which would take him from the halls and youth clubs of North London to the stages of Glastonbury, the London Palladium and The Royal Albert Hall. Hilarious and blissfully nostalgic, this is a riotous account of a bedroom dreamer's attempts to conquer the world armed with nothing more than a chancer's enthusiasm and a simple philosophy: how hard can it be? *** 'At the heart of this entertaining memoir is a little boy in his back garden in Finchley, banging out a rhythm on saucepans with a couple of wooden spoons' Daily Mail 'A rocking whirlwind of a tale' DANNY BAKER 'Wonderful . . . will increase your zest for life' RICHARD AYOADE 'Entertaining . . . what comes through every anecdote is the author's genuine enthusiasm for music' Spectator

Book Nostalgia Anxiety Politics Media and Performing Arts in Egypt Central Eastern Europe and Russia

Download or read book Nostalgia Anxiety Politics Media and Performing Arts in Egypt Central Eastern Europe and Russia written by Tetyana Dzyadevych and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2025-01-07 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume shows that the cultural production of nostalgia is a major tool for structuring feelings of resentment and anxiety. The current volume is concerned with collective nostalgia as it has been elicited, channeled, and weaponized by media production agents. The book aims to analyze how the performing arts and media (music, cinema, TV, etc.) generate and shape the feeling of collective nostalgia. It shows how the cultural production of nostalgia reflects distinct social-political contexts and serves particular political purposes. The collective monograph prioritizes cases from the post-Soviet context. However, the authors do not argue that the collapse of the socialist bloc in general, and the USSR in particular, has established some unique nostalgic precedent. The book claims that mechanisms of producing nostalgia and marshaling it for political purposes are broadly similar in most (modern or postmodern) settings. It is not our intent to demonize Russia, nor do we want Russia to be our dominant frame of reference, even if, in most of our cases here, 'nolens volens' appeared first in Russia-centric post-Soviet discourse. The “Russian bloc” has been placed in the second part of the book in order to give primacy to non-Russian subjects.

The list-makers - lists are for shoppers not rockers, and this book is not for you. This is not a list - this is a manifesto, and this book is for ... the Freaks. Musician and author Luke Haines embarks on an odyssey through the ages, exploring how the 'freaks' infiltrated modern culture - and almost won the rock 'n' roll wars - only to lose to the rise of Cool Britannia and TV 'talent' shows that turned the strange and the outsiders into fodder for laughter. In this ultimate celebration of freakdom, Haines tells the story of pivotal freaks - including Johnnie Ray, Gene Vincent, Hank Marvin, Syd Barrett, the Incredible String Band and Big Youth - through the prism of rock 'n' roll and explains how freaks infiltrated wider culture through history in the form of the Cathars, the Ranters, Hells Angels and the Yippies. Part memoir, part manifesto, Freaks Out! is a righteous alternate history of rock 'n' roll.

Book I Me Mine

  • Author : Veronica Skrimsjö

Download or read book I Me Mine written by Veronica Skrimsjö and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, there is very little academic literature dealing with the topic of record collecting, and, when the topic is broached, it appears to be done so with some level of suspicion towards the record collector. As such, the only depictions of record collectors in the public domain tend to be very stereotypical and demeaning. This work serves as a new starting point in how the record collector and the practices involved are viewed and understood by considering the roots of these stereotypes, which mainly stem from the work of the Frankfurt School theorists who lived during a time of great insecurity, both in regards to new methods of production for cultural artefacts and art, but also their physical lives. Once this has been achieved, a consideration of more realistic record collecting practices takes place through discussions with collectors themselves, an examination of a collectible record label (Vertigo Records), and a diachronic analysis of the theories that have contributed to a fallacious view of the record collector. The record collector consumes his/her records on an individual basis – both in terms of person to person, but also – and crucially – even record to record. Ultimately, it is argued that one cannot define consumption through (the artefact’s) production, which most considerations of the record collector have mistakenly done.
