Book Our Oldest Enemy

Download or read book Our Oldest Enemy written by John J. Miller and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberté? Egalité? Fraternité? Or just plain gall? In this provocative and brilliantly researched history of how the French have dealt with the United States, John J. Miller and Mark Molesky demonstrate that the cherished idea of French friendship has little basis in reality. Despite the myth of the “sister republics,” the French have always been our rivals, and have harmed and obstructed our interests more often than not. This history of French hostility goes back to 1704, when a group of French and Indians massacred American settlers in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The authors also debunk the myth of French aid during the Revolution: contrary to popular notions, the French did not enter the war until very late and were mainly interested in hurting their rivals, the British. After the war, the French continued to see themselves as major players in the Western hemisphere and shaped their policies to limit the growth and power of the new nation. The notorious XYZ affair, involving French efforts to undermine the government of George Washington, led to an undeclared naval war with France in 1798. During the Civil War, the French supported the Confederacy and installed a puppet emperor in Mexico. In the twentieth century, Americans clashed with the French repreatedly. The French victory over President Wilson at Versailles imposed a short-sighted and punitive settlement on Germany that paved the way for the rise of fascism in the 1930s. During World War II, Vichy French troops killed hundreds of American soldiers in North Africa, and diehard French fascist units fought against the Allies in the rubble of Berlin. During the Cold War, Charles DeGaulle yanked France out of NATO and obstructed our efforts to roll back Soviet expansion. The legacy of French imperial power has been no less disastrous. The French left Haiti in a shambles, got us into Vietnam, and educated many of the world’s worst tyrants at their elite universities, including Pol Pot, the genocidal Cambodian dictator. The fascist Baath regimes in Iraq and Syria are another legacy of failed French colonialism. Americans have been particularly irritated by French cultural arrogance—their crusades against American movies, McDonalds, Disney, and the exclusion of American words from their language have always rubbed us the wrong way. This irritation has now blossomed into outrage. Our Oldest Enemy shows why that outrage is justified.

Book Alliance Persistence within the Anglo American Special Relationship

Download or read book Alliance Persistence within the Anglo American Special Relationship written by Ruike Xu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to demystify the persistence of the Anglo-American Special Relationship (AASR) in the post-Cold War era by constructing a new theory of alliance persistence. This theory of alliance persistence not only has stronger explanatory power than the predominant model of interests and sentiments, but also opens a new way for understanding what factors have prevented the AASR from collapsing. This innovative new volume fills the gap in AASR literature by focusing on the important role of institutionalization in sustaining the AASR, a factor that has been significantly overlooked in existing academic research.

Download or read book A Library of the World s Best Literature Ancient and Modern Vol VII Forty Five Volumes Bunner Calverley written by Charles Dudley Warner and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 7 include: . excerpts from John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress . speeches of Edmund Burke . the writings of Frances Hodgon Burnett . poems by Robert Burns . travel/adventure writings from Sir Richard F. Burton . poems of Lord Byron . the writings of Julius Caesar . speeches by John Caldwell Calhoun . poems of Callimachus . and much, much more.

Book Fighting With Allies

Download or read book Fighting With Allies written by Robin Renwick and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was Winston Churchill who, in his speech at Fulton, Missouri, advocated a 'special relationship between the British Commonwealth ... and the United States ... the continuance of intimate relationships between our military advisers, leading to the common study of potential dangers'. Through the eyes of Churchill, Roosevelt and their successors, Robin Renwick traces the development of the Anglo-American relationship since the desperate summer of 1940, and the part it played in shaping the post-war world. Detecting once again a whiff of the 1930s in the air, he concludes that, as one of the ties that binds Europe and North America, the relationship remains an important one, and not only to Britain and the United States. There are many on both sides of the Atlantic who will think that the world would have been poorer without it. Its future will depend on learning the lessons of military overstretch in Iraq and Afghanistan and resolving the mismatch between Britain's desire to play a role in world affairs and the resources allocated to doing so.

Book The Anglo Swedish Alliance Against Napoleonic France

Download or read book The Anglo Swedish Alliance Against Napoleonic France written by C. Jorgensen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-03-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study by Christer Jorgensen addresses a much neglected field of study in the history of Scandinavia and the greater Baltic region during the Napoleonic Age. The book concentrates upon relations and the alliance between Britain and Sweden during the middle years of the war; years that encompassed the Austerlitz campaign, the complicated diplomatic talks between the allies, Russia's abandonment of the allied cause at Tilsit (1807), the Russo-Swedish War (1808-09) that decided the fate of Finland, the capitulation of the Gibraltar of the North, and finally the turbulent politics of Sweden during and after the coup of March 1809.

Book America s Special Relationships

Download or read book America s Special Relationships written by John Dumbrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume offers an original collection of essays on the theme of America’s ‘special relationships’. It interrogates in an original and provocative manner the distinctive character of America’s interactions with an array of allies and clients, both international and domestic. The essays vary in their focus; some are primarily historical, some are more contemporary. All consider the quality of ‘specialness’ in the context of America’s relationship with particular countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Russia, Iran and Israel. The collection also concerns the relationship between the American state and key ‘special’ foreign policy interests, notably ethnic lobbies and religious groups. Bringing together a wide range of experts, this timely collection provides a valuable addition to the debates surrounding US foreign policy, and will be of great interest to students and scholars of American politics, American history and international relations.
