Book The Immortal Deed of Michael O Leary

Download or read book The Immortal Deed of Michael O Leary written by Cónal Creedon and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael O'Leary was born in Iveleary, the ancient tribal homeland of the O'Leary clan. It is a land of the warrior and the poet, where history and story go hand in hand, and the spiritual and the natural complement each other without contradiction or contrivance. This is a story of Ireland with the clan O'Leary at its core. It offers a perspective of Irish history as viewed from the half-door of a hillside cottage in Iveleary. It is a saga that thunders along the beautiful green and leafy Lee Valley - from its mystical source high up over Gougán, all the way to the Gearagh and the broad meandering latticework of waterways of Corcach Mór na Mumhan. Iveleary is not just a destination, it is a journey into time; it is a sound, a scent, a state of mind. Cónal Creedon invites you to join him on his voyage of discovery into the heartland of O'Leary country; a land where fact and fiction dovetail together seamlessly, and pagan tradition and Christian belief become one.

Book Signposts to the Past

Download or read book Signposts to the Past written by Margaret Gelling and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place-names are important to the historian and the archaeologist. Quite apart from the inherent interest of the original meaning of a place-name, the fact that in England there are six successive layers of language reflected in the stock of place-names means that they provide vital evidence for dating and, indeed, for estimating the mixture of races in the composition of the nation. The author, as President of the English Place-Name Society, has succeeded in bringing the story of English place-names to a wider public in this fascinating general study. The response to the first edition demonstrated the book's appeal to the reader with an interest in the evolution, meaning and significance of the names of our towns, villages, rivers and hills. The Listener said that the book 'opens up the whole subject in the most enthralling manner', while Comment observed '...a classic in this field, essential reading for anyone interested in local history'. This new edition emphasises the contribution that this philological discipline can make to the work of the archaeologist and the historian and to our understanding of the long process of human settlement in our island. The sub-title of the book is 'Place-Names and the History of England'...Dr Gelling and her colleagues have made great strides in exploiting the latent store of information about the past preserved in the names of places.

Book Peasants Making History

  • Author : Christopher Dyer
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2022-06-02

  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book Peasants Making History written by Christopher Dyer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peasants have been despised, underrated, or disregarded in the past. Historians and archaeologists are now giving them a more positive assessment, and in Peasants Making History, Christopher Dyer sets a new agenda for this kind of study. Using as his example the peasants of the west midlands of England, Dyer examines peasant society in relation to their social superiors (their lords), their neighbours, and their households, and finds them making decisions and taking options to improve their lives. In their management of farming, both cultivation of fields and keeping of livestock, they made a series of modifications and some dramatic changes, not just reacting to shifts in circumstances but also devising creative initiatives. Peasants played an active role in the development of towns, both by migrating into urban settings, but also by trading actively in urban markets. Industry in the countryside was not imposed on the rural population, but often the result of peasant enterprise and flexibility. If we examine peasant attitudes and mentalities, we find them engaging in political life, making a major contribution to religion, recognizing the need to conserve the environment, and balancing the interests of individuals with those of the communities in which they lived. Many features of our world have medieval roots, and peasants played an important part in the development of the rural landscape, participation of ordinary people in government, parish church buildings, towns, and social welfare. The evidence to support this peasant-centred view has to be recovered by imaginative interpretation, and by using every type of source, including the testimony of archaeology and landscape.
