Download or read book London Bridge and its Houses c 1209 1761 written by Dorian Gerhold and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London Bridge lined with houses from end to end was one of the most extraordinary structures ever seen in London. It was home to over 500 people, perched above the rushing waters of the Thames, and was one of the city’s main shopping streets. It is among the most familiar images of London in the past, but little has previously been known about the houses and the people who lived and worked in them. This book uses plentiful newly-discovered evidence, including detailed descriptions of nearly every house, to tell the story of the bridge and its houses and inhabitants. With the new information it is possible to reconstruct the plan of the bridge and houses in the seventeenth century, to trace the history of each house back through rentals and a survey to 1358, revealing the original layout, to date most of the houses which appear in later views, and to show how the houses and their occupants changed during five and half centuries. The book describes what stopped the houses falling into the river, how the houses were gradually enlarged, what their layout was inside, what goods were sold on the bridge and how these changed over time, the extensive rebuilding in 1477-1548 and 1683-96, and the removal of the houses around 1760. There are many new discoveries - about the structure of the bridge, the width of the roadway, the original layout of the houses, how the houses were supported, the size and internal planning of the houses, the quality of their architecture, and the trades practised on the bridge. The book includes five newly-commissioned reconstruction drawings showing what we now know about the bridge and its houses.

Download or read book The Artist and the Bridge written by John Sweetman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this book explores how, from the stone bridges of neoclassicism which soar out of wild woods to span pastoral valleys to the post-1750 engineer’s bridge with its links to the more industrial landscape, the bridge was a popular feature in painting throughout the period 1700-1920. Why did so many artists choose to portray bridges? In this lavishly illustrated and intriguing book, John Sweetman seeks to answer this question. He traces the history of the bridge in painting and printmaking through a vast range of work, some as familiar as William Etty’s The Bridge of Sighs and Claude Monet’s The Railway Bridge at Argenteuil and others less well known such as Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition IV and C.R.W. Nevinson’s Looking Through the Brooklyn Bridge. Distinctive characteristics emerge revealing the complex role of the bridge as both symbol and metaphor, and as a place of vantage, meeting and separation.

Download or read book The Bridges of Medieval England written by David Featherstone Harrison and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval bridges are startling achievements of civil engineering, which prove the importance of road transport and the sophistication of the medieval economy. The Bridges of Medieval England rewrites their history, offering new insights into many aspects of the subject. It has profound implications for our understanding of pre-industrial economy and society, challenging accepted accounts of the development of medieval trade and communications and showing continuities from the Anglo-Saxon period to the eve of the Industrial Revolution.

Book excerpt: "[It] would not by any means surprise me to find the New Reader, - for there is a New Reader, just as there is a New Journalist and a New Woman - asking with some acerbity what the deuce I have to do in this galley: a craft on board which, time out of mind, the labouring oars have been tugged at by rowers fifty times abler and more observant than I? Assuming this question to have been put, a very brief reply shall be given to it. Thirty-seven years have passed away since I published a book called Twice Round the Clock: or The Hours of the Day and Night in London; and I have been writing, at intervals, about the great metropolis ever since..."--Preface, p. ix.
