Of the many defects of my work, due to limitations partly of space and partly of capacity, I am fully con scious, but its deficiencies will perhaps appear less serious if account be taken of the class of readers whose wants it is meant to supply. It is not intended for scholars, who will find in it little that is unfamiliar except the mistakes, but for less advanced students, who require in a text-book not so much extensive erudition as simplicity of method and perspicuity of statement.
