During the First World War, he served as a Lieutenant of Infantry in the United States Army. As consultant to New H amp shire State Government he has had many contacts with finance, taxation, and state administration; has served as a member of the New Hampshire Tax Commission. During the many years that Mr. Whittemore was identified with The Boston £9 Maine Railroad and with Maine Central Railroad, his have been unusual opportunities to come close to New England, to her background, her traditions, her. People, and her potentialities. Today, he is in a post of highest responsibilities in respect to New England's future. His service, likewise, was conspicuous as President of The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Mr. Whittemore, long interested in education, serves on the boards of trustees of Kimball Union Academy, Pem broke Academy, University of New Hampshire, and The Augustus Saint - Gaudens Memorial at Windsor, Vermont. Is a past-presi dent of -new England Council, at Boston. Mr. Whittemore is a Vice - Chairman of the New England Committee, in The N ewcomen Society of England.
