Book Old Records Never Die

Download or read book Old Records Never Die written by Eric Spitznagel and published by Plume. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Records Never Die is a memoir of one man's search for his lost record collection. Journalist Eric Spitznagel sets out to scour every flea market and dusty attic in the country, every cluttered used record store, every hoarder's basement and eBay seller's home, and every radio station that employs a friend of a friend until he is reunited with the precious vinyl artifacts from his past. As he embarks on his hero's journey, he reminisces about the actual records, the music, and the people he listened to it with old girlfriends, his high school pals, and, most poignantly, his father, who died the year his son was born. He explores the magic of music and memory as he interweaves his adventures in record- culture with questions about our connection to our past, whether we can ever recapture it, and whether we would want to if we could.

Download or read book Old Spacemen Never Die written by John Jakes and published by Armchair Fiction & Music. This book was released on 2012 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels. The first novel is by John W. Jakes. “Old Spacemen Never Die” is about a hate that spilled across the galaxy. They were brothers…yes…but in name only. Each wanted the other dead—and they weren’t too timid about pulling a trigger or sinking a knife. One commanded a powerful galactic fleet, the other commanded a fleet of murderous space pirates. When they met in battle, a wave of unimaginable bloodshed soon spread across the galaxy. And then there was the woman, the wanton woman whom both brothers wanted for reasons unknown even to themselves—the woman whose nakedness of body and rawness of character only fanned the flames of their hatred even brighter. Famed author John W. Jakes spins an exciting, yet decidedly grim tale of bloody interplanetary conflict and intrigue. A story filled with hatred, love, lust, and death—all wrapped in the enigma of twisted human frailties. The second novel, “Return to Earth,” is by veteran sci-fi author Bryan Berry. There was a yearning by some Venusians to return home…to Earth. But there had never been any space flight. It was against the law! The Astronomical Institute had decided ages ago that it was impractical, and that no attempts should be made to break out of the Venusian gravitational field. And so space flight was made…taboo. So people the world over accepted this as fact. It was what they had been taught; it was what they believed. Citizens went about their daily lives with the firm belief that the human race had originated on Venus thousands and thousands of years before, never dreaming the truth, never guessing that humanity’s roots led back to Earth. But there were a few men who had doubts—just a few. Men like Mike Woolf, Kerry, and Rennig. Men who were—curious…

Book Astronauts and Their Cats

Download or read book Astronauts and Their Cats written by Anne Hart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-04-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronauts and Their Cats: A Mother and Daughter Astronaut Team, the Immortal Shape-Shifting Space Cats, Snifferu and Whiskers, keep Patches, the Kitten busy in the Intergalactic Cat Club. They make a rather different family household during the day. However, at night, the space station is cat-shadow dark, except for the human’s cats that mingle with the shape-shifting immortal space cats that prowl the corridors and live among the rows of computers. They are wannabee free cats who travel onboard the space shuttles. Some, unknown to the space program, aren’t even home-grown. "Which cat sprayed gang graffiti on the space shuttle?" A ground controller cat, an orange tabby, studied the photo. "But how did it get there?" He aimed a scowl over his computer at his boss. "Maybe it's a paste-on the astronauts put up to celebrate all those years here," the boss said in a dark-as-coffee voice. The cat’s boss hurried to another computer. Patches, the Earth-born part orange tabby, part Siamese cat, formerly a library cat adopted by the ground controller's boss, sniffed with disdain and curled up on top of the main filing cabinet. A computer screen banner reflected bright red in each kitten's cornflower blue eyes. Rows of blinking computers lit up the room everywhere. The controller called in an expert. Every expert in the room studied the graffiti this time through video monitors as they watched the space shuttle. The controller pressed a button on his phone. "I'll call security."

Book Science Fiction Magazine Story Index 1926 1995

Download or read book Science Fiction Magazine Story Index 1926 1995 written by Terry A. Murray and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the appearance of the first science fiction magazine in 1926, thousands of short stories have been published in periodicals devoted to the genre. These stories cover a wide range of subjects, from spacecraft to the human condition, and feature little-known authors as well as masters like Ellison and Asimov. In the past, finding which issue of what magazine ran a certain story was nearly impossible. This much-needed reference tool provides valuable assistance in the daunting task of locating short stories published in science fiction magazines, providing exhaustive indexes to magazines, authors, and titles, allowing a variety of options for research on 34,000 stories appearing in nearly 5,000 issues of 133 genre magazines. Stories from all major American publications, as well as from several minor periodicals, are indexed. Also included is an appendix of the best known and most prolific contributors, giving the titles of all their stories in this work (necessary because the huge author index does not show titles). A guide to how to use this book clarifies its features for the researcher.

Book Dogs with Careers Ten Happy Ending Stories of Purpose and Passion

Download or read book Dogs with Careers Ten Happy Ending Stories of Purpose and Passion written by Anne Hart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "They're library dogs, Charlie. They're all dog-faces," laughed the space station manager, as he waved goodnight to his security dogs and locked the gates. "They're not just dogs with jobs, but detective canines with investigative sniffing careers at the space station and in outer space." At night, the space station's library is eerie, dim lighted, and in places, simply velvet-shadow dark, except for the human's dogs. They mingle with the shape-shifting immortal space dogs that prowl the space station library's corridors and live among the rows of computers. Career dogs just want to have fun traveling onboard the space shuttles as working companion dogs, never locked behind gates. These dogs don't bite. They are dogs with purpose and passion. This is a team of working dogs that can shape-shift from dog to human and human to dog live outside of time. And in this century, they work for a mother and daughter astronaut team. "Which dog sprayed wolf graffiti on the space shuttle?" A ground controller dog, a mellow, Chocolate Labrador retriever, studied the photo. "But how did it get there?" "Maybe it's a paste-on tattoo that the astronauts put on board to celebrate all those years here," the pack leader howled in a licorice-sweet yelp. The omega canine hurried to switch off another computer. 'Retriever,' formerly a "library greeter dog" but now the ground controller's pet, sniffed with curiosity. He stretched and curled up on top of the filing cabinet.

Book Problem Solving and Cat Tales for the Holidays

Download or read book Problem Solving and Cat Tales for the Holidays written by Anne Hart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a collection of happy, nourishing hero-cat and loving human family historical, adventure, and time-travel stories and novels for all holidays...in spite of the wars. It's Christmas. It's Hannukah. It's Ramadan. It's all holidays, and time for an adventure. For example, take the Silk Road stories: "For where there's worship, there's more trade," Baghatur added. The next morning was another hot day in July, and Bihar went along the road between the fields of wheat. Women were starting to work the fields again. The children carried sheaves on their heads. Everything had to be done by hand. In Nablus, life went with no work. The food was gone, and not enough healers yet. So Bihar was welcome to mix his herbs and alchemy because they made miracles. He passed an old farmer wearing a large Greek cross. "Keev Halik?" In Arabic Bihar asked the man how he was. "Forget me," the farmer waved back. "Your crops are still rotting?" Bihar asked as he walked toward Jerusalem. "I had to sell my farm cheap." The farmer laughed tensely. "So did my forefathers in Sarkel," Bihar answered, with a pointed finger. "Are you a Cherkessk Mountaineer?" "What difference would it make to you from where I come? Does the left side of the Sea mean more to you than the right side of it? There's enough fish at both ends to feed the world." "Where are you going?" The farmer shielded his eyes from the sun with his hands. "I'm going to Jerusalem."
