Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Old French and English Ballads The music of these songs has been taken, as a rule, from the oldest forms available, and for the choice between them, when variants exist, the editor's liking has been the sole determinisz ing factor. With regard to time, it is as well to notice that the minim must be taken at the rate of a crotchet in our days. When the type was designed a question arose as to the use of bars. Bars are a device to awaken a sense of rhythm in those naturally deficient in it, unknown to music at the time when these songs were writ, ten, and we have not thought it necessary to in, trude them. The emphasis must be determined by the words themselves, even the relative length of the notes is a matter of approximation only. A song like la Courte Pa1lle for ex, ample, which has never been conventionalised, can only be written down by varying the time signature from bar to bar, and even then the re: which I mean one who sings the words to be understood, intuitively produces. The best ac, companiment for them is a lute, or failing that, a guitar. No word of praise of poems which have been loved and sung by artists and poets since they knew them shall be added. They are. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the visual representation of an essentially oral text, Sylvia Huot points out, the medieval illuminated manuscript has a theatrical, performative quality. She perceives the tension between implied oral performance and real visual artifact as a fundamental aspect of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century poetics. In this generously illustrated volume, Huot examines manuscript texts both from the performance-oriented lyric tradition of chanson courtoise, or courtly love lyric, and from the self-consciously literary tradition of Old French narrative poetry. She demonstrates that the evolution of the lyrical romance and dit, narrative poems which incorporate thematic and rhetorical elements of the lyric, was responsible for a progressive redefinition of lyric poetry as a written medium and the emergence of an explicitly written literary tradition uniting lyric and narrative poetics. Huot first investigates the nature of the vernacular book in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, analyzing organization, page layout, rubrication, and illumination in a series of manuscripts. She then describes the relationship between poetics and manuscript format in specific texts, including works by widely read medieval authors such as Guillaume de Lorris, Jean de Meun, and Guillaume de Machaut, as well as by lesser-known writers including Nicole de Margival and Watriquet de Couvin. Huot focuses on the writers' characteristic modifications of lyric poetics; their use of writing and performance as theme; their treatment of the poet as singer or writer; and of the lady as implied reader or listener; and the ways in which these features of the text were elaborated by scribes and illuminators. Her readings reveal how medieval poets and book-makers conceived their common project, and how they distinguished their respective roles.

  • Author : Pascal Quignard
  • Publisher : Yale University Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Pascal Quignard’s distinguished literary career, music has been a recurring obsession. As a musician he organized the International Festival of Baroque Opera and Theatre at Versailles in the early 1990s, and thus was instrumental in the rediscovery of much forgotten classical music. Yet in 1994 he abruptly renounced all musical activities. The Hatred of Music is Quignard’s masterful exploration of the power of music and what history reveals about the dangers it poses. From prehistoric chants to challenging contemporary compositions, Quignard reflects on music of all kinds and eras. He draws on vast cultural knowledge—the Bible, Greek mythology, early modern history, modern philosophy, the Holocaust, and more—to develop ten accessible treatises on music. In each of these small masterpieces the author exposes music’s potential to manipulate, to mesmerize, to domesticate. Especially disturbing is his scrutiny of the role music played in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Quignard’s provocative book takes on particular relevance today, as we find ourselves surrounded by music as never before in history.
