It is down there somewhere where it cooled into bathylithic crust back in the gray dawn of time when the earth was made. There it is part of the same ledge of which Scituate and Cohasset are built. All above that is terminal moraine, rock detritus piled upon rock foundation by the glacier. Plymouth Rock itself thus came joy riding from some ledge up Boston way, alighting from this first and greatest New England Transportation System only a few hundred thousand years before Mary Chilton arrived to set foot upon it."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pilgrim Trails: A Plymouth-to-Provincetown Sketchbook When the artist says that a house is nautical, he means that it looks as if it had been built by seafaring men; not by wealthy ship-owners, but by generations of skippers and men before the mast. When you build a nautical house, you should begin more than a hundred years ago with a small cot tage on the side-hill over the harbor, and add on a snug cabin now and then, tucking in a shipshape companionway here and there, and running a new section out along the slope. If you like to indulge your taste in roofs, you make a, different kind for every addition. One section may be gable, another lean-to, and the one-story addition may run out as long as you please, shaped on top something like the roof of a barge. Simply fit your building to the ups and downs of the land and the ways of the wind. A bit of faded blue paint somewhere on the blinds or near the door, and all your roofing weathered by many hundred harbor gales, and your house is nautical. There are not as many of these in Plymouth as in Gloucester, but there are a few. In fact, at Plymouth you may find almost any kind of build ing you look for, from Mansard roofs and bunga lows, to the lobster-houses down by Eel River, the shooting-boxes out on the sand-spit, and the dark old structures beside Town Brook and around the region once known as Clamshell Alley. We had left the car at the garage, and had walked along the upper streets over the hill. The artist was going sketching, his brother Alexander was meeting a business appointment, and Barbara and I had come to see Plymouth. In the darkest hour of this night, I saw a thin point of light rise out of the mystery of the sea far to the eastward, the tiny sail of the shallop of the old moon, blown landward by little winds of dawn, making port on the shore of "hither Manomet." In the velvety blackness of this ultimate hour of night the slender sail curved[...]".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plymouth 0 tell the tale of Plymouth in a small book has been by no means an easy task. A longer book would have been in some ways much easier there is such abundant wealth of material that the most rigid selection and rejection have been necessary. There is also a difficulty in giving each period its true proportion, neglecting none in favour of another and the necessity of recording many facts, yet unitmg these in a stream of readable narrative. It will be clearly understood that this is not intended as a guide-book, and that it omits much which the ordinary guide-book would give. Many particulars about the dockyards, the naval and military institutions, the commercial activities, must be sought elsewhere. The endeavour here has been to View the Three Towns as a unity from the commencement, though it was Only themyenaf i914 that saw their final union; and it is hoped that no reader will detect any local prejudice or preference. The fact that the book is published in the Tercen tenary year of the M ayflower's sailing, has added a desire that some readers across the Atlantic may.
