Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Mortality Concerning those who came to my Landlord for liquor, and went thirsty away, for lack of present coin, or future credit, I cannot but say it has grieved my bowels as if the case had been mine own. Nevertheless, my Landlord considered the neces sities of a thirsty soul, and would permit them, in extreme need, and when their soul was impoverished for lack of moisture, to drink to the full value of their watches and wearing apparel, exclusively of their inferior habiliments, which he was uniformly inexorable in obliging them to retain, for the credit of the house. As to mine own part, I may well say that he never refused me that modicum of refreshment with which I am wont to recruit nature after the fatigues of my school. It is true, I taught his five sons English and Latin, writing, book-keeping, with a tincture of mathematics, and that I in structed his daughter in psalmody. Nor do I remember me of any fee or honorarium received from him on account of these my labours, except the compotations aforesaid - nevertheless, this compensation suited my humour well, since it is a hard sentence to bid a dry throat wait till quarter-day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Mortality, Vol. 1 Again, the Exciseman pretended, that my deceased Landlord did encourage that species of manufacture called distillation, without having an especial permission from the Great, technically called a license, for doing so. Now, I stand up to confront this falsehood; and in defiance of him, his gauging-stick, and pen and ink horn, I tell him, that I never saw, or tasted, a glass of unlawful aqua vitae in the house of my Landlord; nay, that, on the contrary, we needed not such devices, in respect of a. Pleasing and somewhat seductive liquor, which was vended and consumed at the Wallace Inn, under the name of mountain dew. Book Mortality From Casualties Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mortality From Casualties Classic Reprint written by New York Mutual Life Insurance Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mortality From Casualties I propose to examine in detail the deaths that have occurred from casualties during the past ten years, p classifying them according to the manner and cause of death. I shall give tables illustrating the important facts of each class, and will compare the figures with those given in the previous mortality report of the Company. In comparing the recent mortality with that in the previous report, it will be found that the proportion of deaths from casualties compared with thetotal mortality is far less now than formerly, but that this difference is chiefly due to the difference in the ages of the Company's risks. In the earlier records the pro portion of elderly persons was very small; the business was new business, and consequently there was little accumulation of old lives. Now, it is different, and there is a considerable accumulation of old lives. Among old lives other natural causes of death preponderate and the casualties are reduced to a small proportion, although they may be as numerous when compared with the lives at risk as they were at an earlier age. For this reason it would be more proper to compare only the mortality during the earlier ages or earlier periods of insurance. In some ways Scott was the first author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Europe, Australia, and North America. Famous titles include: Ivanhoe, The Lady of the Lake and Waverley. At the age of 25 he began dabbling in writing, translating works from German, his first publication being rhymed versions of ballads by Brger in 1796. He then published a three-volume set of collected Scottish ballads, The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. This was the first sign of his interest in Scottish history from a literary standpoint. Amongst his other works are Marmion (1808), The Heart of Mid-Lothian (1818), Rob Roy (1818), The Bride of Lammermoor (1819), The Fortunes of Nigel (1822), St. Ronan's Well (1823), The Betrothed (1825), Kenilworth (1821), The Mirror and Quentin Durward.

If the European harvest hacl reaped old men, however many, rather than young, the challenge for explanation would not have been so stinging. Concerning the extinction of the old, we should have felt as we do about the sequence of blossom, fruitage, decay, and seed - always seed. We should have had the reassurance of an ordered economy perceived as rational: the old, dying, had had their opportunity, had served their purpose. For their passing, we should not have had to remake our think ing; we should have grieved a little and gone on about our business. The only way in which death could exact from us its due consideration was to break our hearts with pity and bafile our brains with wastage. It may be that the enigma of the youth of the world destroyed is insoluble, but the New Death, this unprecedented readiness at last to look into the unseen, is the effort of popular thought to translate pity into mo tive, and bewildering waste into a recon structed relationship to Spiritual values. Not alone by the youth of its victims has. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
