Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theosophical Society (est. 1875 in New York by H. P. Blavatsky, H. S. Olcott and others) is increasingly becoming recognized for its influential role in shaping the alternative new religious and cultural landscape of the late nineteenth and the twentieth century, especially as an early promoter of interest in Indian and Tibetan religions and philosophies. Despite this increasing awareness, many of the central questions relating to the early Theosophical Society and the East remain largely unexplored. This book is the first scholarly anthology dedicated to this topic. It offers many new details about the study of Theosophy in the history of modern religions and Western esotericism. The essays in Imagining the East explore how Theosophists during the formative period understood the East and those of its people with whom they came into contact. The authors examine the relationship of the theosophical approach with orientalism and aspects of the history of ideas, politics, and culture at large and discuss how these esoteric or theosophical representations mirrored conditions and values current in nineteenth-century mainstream intellectual culture. The essays also look at how the early Theosophical Society's imagining of the East differed from mainstream 'orientalism' and how the Theosophical Society's mission in India was distinct from that of British colonialism and Christian missionaries.

Book excerpt: A Guide to Using Out-of-Body Experiences for Spiritual Development The Astral Codex is an effective, practical, and comprehensive guide to what out-of-body experiences are, what to see and do in the astral plane, how it fits into the structure of life, and how to use it for spiritual development. Throughout history, seekers of spiritual wisdom have traveled beyond the body into other dimensions to explore a wider reality. Their experiences formed the basis of otherworldly accounts found in many of the world's sacred teachings. Drawing on decades of out-of-body experiences, Belsebuub explains how someone can use astral travel to seek out spiritual knowledge today. The Astral Codex is based on the popular "A Course in Astral Travel and Dreams" by Belsebuub-a course created in 2001 that was studied online and in-person, and taken by tens of thousands of people worldwide. 67% of people surveyed who took the course reported having an out-of-body experience as a result of it. The Astral Codex includes sections with detailed Q&As from the course. Find out what lucid dreaming and astral projection is. Learn about the multi-dimensional nature of reality. Learn about what the astral plane is and how to travel there. Discover what dreams mean and how to remember them. Learn how to explore destinations in the astral plane. Discover how to become successful at astral projection. Overcome common obstacles to conscious astral travel. Find out how the mind and emotions affects our ability to perceive other dimensions. Learn about how we leave our body every night with sleep. Discover how dreams and the astral plane are connected. Learn about the different ways someone can have an out-of-body experience (OBE). Discover the stages and sensations of having an OBE. Learn exercises to help train the mind to stay focused on astral techniques. Find out why we have bad dreams and nightmares and where they come from. Discover the reasons why science is limited in its studies on OBEs. Mark Pritchard (writing with the name Belsebuub) is the author of a number of books on out-of-body experiences, dreams, self-discovery, and esoteric wisdom including A Course in Astral Travel and Dreams which became a bestseller in its genre, and Gazing into the Eternal which was a finalist in the Best Book Awards 2009 in spirituality. Book excerpt: When Martine’s home in England burns down, killing her parents, she must go to South Africa to live on a wildlife game preserve, called Sawubona, with the grandmother she didn’t know she had. Almost as soon as she arrives, Martine hears stories about a white giraffe living in the preserve. But her grandmother and others working at Sawubona insist that the giraffe is just a myth. Martine is not so sure, until one stormy night when she looks out her window and locks eyes with Jemmy, a young silvery-white giraffe. Why is everyone keeping Jemmy’s existence a secret? Does it have anything to do with the rash of poaching going on at Sawubona? Martine needs all of the courage and smarts she has, not to mention a little African magic, to find out. First-time children’s author Lauren St. John brings us deep into the African world, where myths become reality and a young girl with a healing gift has the power to save her home and her one true friend.

Book Heidegger s Glasses

Download or read book Heidegger s Glasses written by Thaisa Frank and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An occult Nazi program is threatened by a philosopher’s letter to a friend in this “stunning work, full of mystery and strange tenderness” (Dan Chaon). In the waning days of World War II, Nazi Germany is coming apart at the seams. Yet the death machine continues to churn. The Third Reich’s obsession with the astral plane has led to the formation of an underground compound of scribes—translators charged with answering letters addressed to concentration camp inmates who are most likely dead. Into this covert compound comes a letter written by eminent philosopher Martin Heidegger to his optometrist, a prisoner of Auschwitz. Goebbels himself has demanded a response. But the mere presence of Heidegger’s words—one simple letter in a place filled with letters—sparks a series of events that will ultimately threaten the safety of the entire compound. With this debut novel that is part thriller and part meditation on how the dead are remembered—and with threads of Heidegger’s philosophy woven throughout—Thaisa Frank deftly reconstructs the landscape of Nazi Germany in “a spellbinding, innovative, intellectually compelling tour–de–force” (Michelle Huneven).

Book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind

Download or read book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind written by Julian Jaynes and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist: “This man’s ideas may be the most influential, not to say controversial, of the second half of the twentieth century.”—Columbus Dispatch At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes's still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only three thousand years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion—and indeed our future. “Don’t be put off by the academic title of Julian Jaynes’s The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Its prose is always lucid and often lyrical…he unfolds his case with the utmost intellectual rigor.”—The New York Times “When Julian Jaynes . . . speculates that until late in the twentieth millennium BC men had no consciousness but were automatically obeying the voices of the gods, we are astounded but compelled to follow this remarkable thesis.”—John Updike, The New Yorker “He is as startling as Freud was in The Interpretation of Dreams, and Jaynes is equally as adept at forcing a new view of known human behavior.”—American Journal of Psychiatry

Book The Acid Diaries

Download or read book The Acid Diaries written by Christopher Gray and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the personal and spiritual truths revealed through LSD • Reveals that LSD visions weave an ongoing story from trip to trip • Shows that trips progress through three stages: personal issues and pre-birth consciousness, ego-loss, and on to the sacred • Explores psychedelic use throughout history, including the mass hallucinations common in the Middle Ages and the early therapeutic use of LSD Toward the end of his fifties, Christopher Gray took, for the first time in years, a 100-microgram acid trip. So extraordinary, and to his surprise so enjoyable, were the effects that he began to take the same dose in the same way--quietly and on his own--once every two to three weeks. In The Acid Diaries, Gray details his experimentation with LSD over a period of three years and shares the startling realization that his visions were weaving an ongoing story from trip to trip, revealing an underlying reality of personal and spiritual truths. Following the theories of Stanislav Grof and offering quotes from others’ experiences that parallel his own--including those of Aldous Huxley, Albert Hofmann, and Gordon Wasson--he shows that trips progress through three stages: the first dealing with personal issues and pre-birth consciousness; the second with ego-loss, often with supernatural overtones; and the third with sacred, spiritual, and even apocalyptic themes. Pairing his experiences with an exploration of psychedelic use throughout history, including the ergot-spawned mass hallucinations that were common through the Middle Ages and the early use of LSD for therapeutic purposes, Gray offers readers a greater understanding and appreciation for the potential value of LSD not merely for transpersonal growth but also for spiritual development.
