Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each poem within this collection, whether historically based, fictional, or fantasy, has some connection with or to my father’s sacred ground, the Old Mill Creek; founded in 1861, the 2,500-acre nature preserve is Ohio’s first district park. Your reading journey includes “Star-crossed Lovers Nevermore,” a poem inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Two poems connected with the family Home Cemetery, where generations of my father’s family and relatives rest, is nestled within the park. The final three poems are a trilogy, part fiction with small, surgical incisions of real events that follow a family’s journey through “Magic in the Trees,” “The Dragon’s Lair,” and “The Miracle of the Polished Stone.” The trilogy presents a dynamic illustration of the dichotomy of human consciousness; the Yin and Yang of the circle of reality and fantasy, tragedy and joy, and despair and redemption.

Book Thomas Lincoln

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of books have been written (and are still being written) about Abraham Lincoln. But in the annals of Lincoln history, Thomas Lincoln, Abraham’s father, is a largely neglected figure. He rates a few paragraphs in an otherwise large biography and has served as a quick backdrop to the birth and childhood of our sixteenth president. Early Lincoln biography did not consider Thomas worthy of much mention. William Herndon set the pattern for how Thomas has been viewed historically. Thomas was seen as “roving and shiftless”, lazy beyond repair. Thomas was said to be uneducated and against education. He was portrayed as mentally and physically slow, “careless, inert, and dull”. He was the obstacle Abraham overcame to become great. That view of Thomas Lincoln is wrong. Thomas was not dull or inert or lazy. He lived in a different path from that chosen by his illustrious son but he was not an obstacle his son had to overcome. Because of this view, many will consider this volume to be revisionist history. In a sense, it is. It will revise the standard view of Thomas based on the historical record available and place him as he was in the events and time in which he lived. However, it is not revisionist in the negative sense that wording often suggests. It is not built from twisting events or rewriting timeframes to make history into something it was not. Thomas Lincoln: Abraham’s Father will correct the old and errant understanding of Thomas Lincoln and show him the man he truly was. It will not enlarge him into something he was not nor will it lower him to be what many have thought him. Lincoln history has a gap in not having the story of Thomas Lincoln readily available. Hopefully this volume will open the doors to taking a new and serious look at the father who raised and shaped Abraham Lincoln’s early life.

Book The Land Before Fort Knox

Download or read book The Land Before Fort Knox written by Gary Kempf and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001-08 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located south of the Ohio River and Louisville, Kentucky, the Fort Knox military installation is the location for the training of U.S. Army Armor and Cavalry forces. Known as the home of Mounted Warfare, Fort Knox is also the location of the U.S. Treasury Department Gold Vault that opened in February 1937. Fort Knox covers 178 square miles and spans parts of Hardin, Meade, and Bullitt Counties. The area was once home to Thomas Lincoln, father of the nation's martyred 16th president, as well as the burial place of Abraham Lincoln's grandmother, Bathsheba Lincoln. Images of America: The Land Before Fort Knox illuminates the past while images bring to light people and places of yesterday.

Download or read book Forever and Five Days written by Lowell Cauffiel and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author’s “auspicious debut in the true-crime genre . . . [a] sensitive and searching story of the murders of at least six nursing home patients” (Publishers Weekly). Outside the dining hall of the Alpine Manor nursing home, there is a sign that reads, “This is Grand Rapids, Michigan,” a reminder for those who can no longer trust their own minds. For months, Cathy Wood has fed these residents, bathed them, and even moistened their eyes with artificial tears. To her, they live in a state worse than death—and she has decided to relieve them of their pain. Wood and her lover, Gwen Graham, make a pact to kill those whom they were hired to care for. No one notices when an elderly person dies a quiet death, but as these two slip deeper into their plan, the terrible secret becomes unbearable. Lowell Cauffiel’s account of the Alpine Manor murders is a chilling saga of true crime and the twisted lengths to which some will go in pursuit of justice.
