Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the finest collections of master drawings in America is at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. To celebrate the museum's centennial, the collection's greatest masterpieces of draftsmanship are being exhibited in Worcester, followed by a tour. These one hundred works, in a broad variety of media, are reproduced in full color, each accompanied by a comprehensive essay. They range from a medieval illuminated choir book page; through old masters Rubens, Guercino, Ribera, the Tiepolos, Boucher, Copley, Prud'hon, David, and Rowlandson; nineteenth-century masters Ingres, Millet, Degas, Gauguin, van Gogh, and Homer; modernist masters Kirchner, Modigliani, Sargent, Grosz, Rivera, Marin, Noguchi, and Giacometti; to recent works by David Hockney and Sam Francis - seven centuries in all, the entire spectrum of Western draftsmanship.

Book The Image of Restoration Science

Download or read book The Image of Restoration Science written by Michael Hunter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a single image - the frontispiece to Thomas Sprat’s History of the Royal-Society of London (1667). Designed by John Evelyn, and etched by Wenceslaus Hollar, it is arguably the best-known representation of seventeenth-century English science. The use of such plates to celebrate and legitimise the ‘new’ science of the period falls into a tradition that was well-established both in Britain and in Europe more generally, and which has increasingly attract attention from historians. Nevertheless, there are many questions to be asked about it and how it came into being. Was it an original composition by Evelyn, or is it based on earlier exemplars? Can all the scientific instruments, books and other objects that appear in it be identified, and what significance should be attached to their inclusion? Above all, how did the plate come to be designed in the first place, and what is its true relationship with Sprat’s book? In order to assess such issues, this study provides a full analysis of Evelyn’s image in its Royal Society setting and the wider world of early-modern science. The book first considers the overall iconography of the image and its message concerning Evelyn’s conception of the society’s role, before moving on to examine the myriad of details included in the plate and their significance. It concludes by considering the print’s history after publication, including the extent to which Evelyn used copies to exemplify the combination of technological and artistic accomplishment to which he believed the society should aspire.

  • Author : Dolora A. Wojciehowski

Download or read book Old Masters New Subjects written by Dolora A. Wojciehowski and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The encounter - sometimes conflict - between traditional Renaissance studies and poststructuralism occasions this book. In it, the author analyzes "old masteries," certain notions of freedom, individualism, and control long associated with the Renaissance, in relation to the ideologies of non-mastery that recur in theory today. This book has a dual purpose. First, it recontextualizes the debates on freedom and determinism presented by five "masters" - Petrarch, Luther, Loyola, Teresa of Avila, and Galileo - by showing that their paradigmatic discourses on will share a distinct rhetorical strategy. Second, it argues that the dominant critical paradigms of the late twentieth century, while ostensibly rejecting and transcending early modern ideas of subjecthood, actually recast Renaissance debates on freedom and power. In many ways, the early modern functions as the unconscious of critical theory.

It features splendid works by some of the greatest draftsmen of all time, among them Michelangelo, Tintoretto, Guercino, Canaletto, Giovanni Battista and Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, Jacques Callot, Claude Lorrain, Francois Boucher, Maurice Quentin de La Tour, Thomas Gainsborough, John Hoppner, Peter Lely and George Romney as well as others by lesser-known and unidentified artists. Scripps, who went on to be one of the great benefactors of the graphic arts division. Among the other leading figures in the history of the drawing collection have been donors John S. Newberry and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Walker as well as director William R. Valentiner, who in 1934 made a now-legendary buying trip to Europe, returning with sixty-nine master drawings acquired with a budget of $4,000."
