Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Manors in the Colony of Maryland In the presentation of this - the second of the series of Early Manors in the Colony of Maryland -it must be borne in mind that it is simply the transcription of lectures given before the Maryland Society of the Colonial Dames of America, under the auspices of the Historic Research Committee, in which the Chairman has endeavored to preserve some traces of these early institutions so rapidly disappear ing. In many cases their later history and that of the large plantations built up in their partition is most interesting, but onlv the earlier lines could be here given and onlv the very earliest documents used. The destruction of so many records by fire in the Court Houses, especially those of 1747 and 1882 in Calvert County, make the work more dif heult and somewhat imperfect, but for the many opportunities afforded the Chairman to gain a personal touch with what remains of the past and to procure the views for illustration, her most sincere obligations are due to a host of friends who will recognize their part and her gratitude in the story'of the Manors on the Patuxent. DELAWARE VAN DYKE--DU PONT--JANVIER--LAMBSON-- STEWART CROSS Delaware Avenue from the Amstel House, New Castle, Delaware, is the David Stewart House, a quaint and charming old mansion built by Governor Van Dyke for his son, Senator Van Dyke, about the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is three stories in height and the front doorway is approached by a high flight of brownstone steps. Dr. David Stewart, the present owner and occupant, is the fifth of his name in New Castle and the fifth of his name to be a physician. The house is simple in exterior and is more attractive for its charm of aspect than for pretension of size or design. The rooms of the interior have lofty ceilings, are well lighted and have good proportions. Downstairs there is a quantity of fine wood-carving in a floral design, especially in the dining-room. A broad hall runs from the front door to the back of the house. Senator Van Dyke, for whom the mansion was built, was born in 1770 in his father's home, the Amstel House. He was educated in Philadelphia and studied law in the office of Chief Justice Kensey Johns. Though an attorney by profession he was a public man by avocation, and spoke for his state in the Halls of Congress for many years. He died in 1826 on the eve of reelection to the United States Senate. Contemporary records of him and traditions speak of him as a man of most delightful personality, known for the charm of his manner and his fine intellectual attainments. Upon the death of Senator Van Dyke, the home fell to the lot of his daughter, Dorcas, who married Charles Irence Du Pont.
