Book Who Speaks for the River

Download or read book Who Speaks for the River written by Robert Girvan and published by Fifth House Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Speaks for the River? tells the true story of the collision between power and justice in the desperate final battle between the Alberta Government, Friends of the Oldman and members of the Piikani First Nation surrounding the building of Alberta's Oldman River dam. Environmentalist Martha Kostuch uses the law and "Woodstock of the Environment," the largest environmental rally in Canada to stop construction of the dam. Piikani First Nation activist Milton Born With A Tooth and his group The Lonefighters, use protests, bulldozers to divert the Oldman River, and one shotgun which Milton fires at police. Those shots result in Milton facing an unfair trial, which one observer characterizes as "what Native people have faced for a century." "My world cannot be documented on your white paper with words. Your dictionaries reveal the white society and show how whites go in circles. Words simply refer to words and are only excuses for what's real. The real world is about fresh air as medicine going into my lungs and the enjoyment of each meal as my last one." --Milton Born With A Tooth, from a Southern Alberta Jail, while waiting for his first trial.

Book From Missouri

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thad Snow
  • Publisher : University of Missouri Press
  • Release : 2012-10-01
  • ISBN : 0826272908
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book From Missouri written by Thad Snow and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snow purchased a thousand acres of southeast Missouri swampland in 1910, cleared it, drained it, and eventually planted it in cotton. Although he employed sharecroppers, he grew to become a bitter critic of the labor system after a massive flood and the Great Depression worsened conditions for these already-burdened workers. Shocking his fellow landowners, Snow invited the Southern Tenant Farmers Union to organize the workers on his land. He was even once accused of fomenting a strike and publicly threatened with horsewhipping. Snow’s admiration for Owen Whitfield, the African American leader of the Sharecroppers’ Roadside Demonstration, convinced him that nonviolent resistance could defeat injustice. Snow embraced pacifism wholeheartedly and denounced all war as evil even as America mobilized for World War II after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he became involved with creating Missouri’s conservation movement. Near the end of his life, he found a retreat in the Missouri Ozarks, where he wrote this recollection of his life. This unique and honest series of personal essays expresses the thoughts of a farmer, a hunter, a husband, a father and grandfather, a man with a soft spot for mules and dogs and all kinds of people. Snow’s prose reveals much about a way of life in the region during the first half of the twentieth century, as well as the social and political events that affected the entire nation. Whether arguing that a good stock dog should be left alone to do its work, explaining the process of making swampland suitable for agriculture, or putting forth his case for world peace, Snow’s ideas have a special authenticity because they did not come from an ivory tower or a think tank—they came From Missouri.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overzealousness of man to push beyond destiny in an attempt to achieve success in life had always been the regrettable aftermath that tends to hunt the starving innocent souls to damnation. The issue of compromise between failure to achieve the golden flees of life creates an inner war, within which a decision has to be made. If the cardinal principles of life are to exist as inheritors of what had been, designated for mankind by the creators, shouldnt it be the duty of man to do what ought to be in order to posses possession? Or could it be in conformity with what the Lord Jesus said: Out of thy perspiration shall thou eat bread?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mississippi River occupies a sacred place in American culture and mythology. Often called The Father of Rivers, it winds through American life in equal measure as a symbol and as a topographic feature. To the people who know it best, the river is life and a livelihood. River boatmen working the wide Mississippi are never far from land. Even in the dark, they can smell plants and animals and hear people on the banks and wharves. Bonnie Stepenoff takes readers on a cruise through history, showing how workers from St. Louis to Memphis changed the river and were in turn changed by it. Each chapter of this fast-moving narrative focuses on representative workers: captains and pilots, gamblers and musicians, cooks and craftsmen. Readers will find workers who are themselves part of the country’s mythology from Mark Twain and anti-slavery crusader William Wells Brown to musicians Fate Marable and Louis Armstrong.

Book John Charles Thomas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael J. Maher
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2015-01-24
  • ISBN : 0786483873
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book John Charles Thomas written by Michael J. Maher and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buoyant, irrepressible and hot-tempered, John Charles Thomas captivated audiences worldwide with his incredible voice. The son of a minister, he studied voice at the Peabody Conservatory under the tutelage of Adelin Fermin, one of the few voice teachers in America capable of training Thomas in the French operatic style. By 1915, Thomas had become a leading performer on Broadway, and ten years later had embarked on a trans-Atlantic career in opera and concerts. At the height of his popularity from 1934 through 1946, he was a popular star of radio, phonographs, and the Metropolitan Opera, a favorite of both popular and classical audiences. His decision to leave opera and focus on his radio career during the Second World War cost him his reputation as a serious artist. The singer who introduced "Home on the Range" and launched many other American standards has been largely forgotten today. This thorough biography details Thomas's life and career. Beginning with his school days at the Peabody, it traces his Broadway career as the star of Step This Way and Maytime and his highly successful career as a concert, recording, and opera star. Appendices provide a discography of his recordings, a list of operatic appearances in Brussels and the United States, and the songs he performed on radio broadcasts from 1934 to 1948.

Book Millennial Medicine

Download or read book Millennial Medicine written by Victor Shane and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention, millennials: Before you know it, you will inherit the health care mess that previous generations have left behind. How will history judge you? Will it show that you made smart decisions to battle diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases? Or will it show that you came and went, and nothing changed? In this book, the author examines why so many people continue to die from cancer, which President Richard Nixon declared war on in 1971. Half a century and billions of taxpayer dollars later, it continues to kill hundreds of thousands of people each year. Get answers to questions such as: • How have beliefs about medicine changed over time? • How can we understand the ontology of cancer? • How is our body like an automobile engine? • Why have we made so little progress in fighting cancer and other diseases? Other topics include DNA mutations, why cancer starts in the first place, thermodynamics and how it relates to disease, and the instability of life. Get a blueprint to look at cancer and health in a new way with the insights in Millennial Medicine. “Victor Shane in Millennial Medicine presents a strong and detailed argument that the attack on the plague of cancer should be aimed at what many believe is its root cause: the malfunctioning of the cell’s repair mechanism, the mitochondria. Shane then associates this malfunctioning as due to the mitochondria receiving malnutrition, the junk foods and processed foods that we feed it. An interesting nuance in the search for a cure.” —Gerald L. Schroeder, Ph.D., Jerusalem, Israel “In his wide-ranging book, Shane skillfully points out the mounting empirical evidence that modern nutritional deficits may contribute to cancer and clearly offers some valuable advice about healthy eating and lifestyles.” —Kirkus Reviews
