In 1878 he was the subject of an in-depth interview and article for the New York Herald. He and the writer discussed many aspects of life in Virginia from the early 1800's through the American Civil War. They covered such issues as politics, horse racing, card playing, foot racing, fox hunting, George Washington, the War of 1812, John Randolph of Roanoke, and the Civil War. This book was released on 1973 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book rings with the names of early inhabitants and prominent citizens. For the genealogist there is the important and wholly fortuitous list of tithables of Pittsylvania County for the year 1767, which enumerates the names of nearly 1,000 landowners and property holders, amounting in sum to a rough census of the county in its infancy. Additional lists include the names, some with inclusive dates of service, of sheriffs, justices of the peace, members of the House of Delegates, 1776-1928, members of the Senate of Virginia, 1776-1928, clerks of the court, and judges.

Download or read book The Wreck of the Old 97 written by Larry G. Aaron and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cause and aftermath of the horrific railway disaster, examined by an award-winning historian. With Fast Mail train No. 97 an hour behind schedule, locomotive engineer Steve Broady, according to legend, swore to “put her in Spencer on time” or “put her in Hell.” Through eyewitness reports and court testimonies, historian Larry Aaron expertly pieces together the events of September 27, 1903, at Danville, Virginia, when the Old 97 plummeted off a forty-five-foot trestle into the ravine below. With more twists and turns than the railroad tracks on which the Old 97 ran, this book chronicles the story of one of the most famous train wrecks in American history, as well as the controversy surrounding “The Wreck of the Old 97,” that most famous ballad, which secured the Old 97 a place within the annals of American folklore.
Download or read book Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families Classic Reprint written by Walter Lee Hopkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families Particular attention has been given to the earlier generations and no attempt has been made to give full genealogies of all the families treated in the book. However, a foundation is laid upon which each descendant may build and attach his own line to the main stem of the branches mentioned herein. Due to the frequent duplication of names among contemporaries, the very little which has been printed on the families, and the de struction of many priceless county and private records in Virginia, especially in the eastern part of the state, by the Federal Army during the War Between the States, the work is naturally not free from errors; however, every effort has been made to insureits accuracy. Rl'he reader must bear in mind that the writer is not a genealogist, and that these records were collected during the spare moments of his busy life. It is unlikely that the first edition of any work on genealogy is free from mistakes, for the compiler of a genealogy, to a great extent, must be guided by what the members of the families send him, and this is often incorrect; consequently, the compiler can only be guided by his best judgment, trusting to future historians to discover any errors and to correct them. Book excerpt: “Warm, original, funny and heartbreaking, this novel made me drop everything so I could read it in one lovely afternoon. When You Read This is inventive and witty, but more importantly it’s honest and wise. I adored it.” — Jennifer Close, author of Girls in White Dresses and The Hopefuls For fans of Maria Semple and Rainbow Rowell, a comedy-drama for the digital age: an epistolary debut novel about the ties that bind and break our hearts. For four years, Iris Massey worked side by side with PR maven Smith Simonyi, helping clients perfect their brands. But Iris has died, taken by terminal illness at only thirty-three. Adrift without his friend and colleague, Smith is surprised to discover that in her last six months, Iris created a blog filled with sharp and often funny musings on the end of a life not quite fulfilled. She also made one final request: for Smith to get her posts published as a book. With the help of his charmingly eager, if overbearingly forthright, new intern Carl, Smith tackles the task of fulfilling Iris’s last wish. Before he can do so, though, he must get the approval of Iris’ big sister Jade, an haute cuisine chef who’s been knocked sideways by her loss. Each carrying their own baggage, Smith and Jade end up on a collision course with their own unresolved pasts and with each other. Told in a series of e-mails, blog posts, online therapy submissions, text messages, legal correspondence, home-rental bookings, and other snippets of our virtual lives, When You Read This is a deft, captivating romantic comedy—funny, tragic, surprising, and bittersweet—that candidly reveals how we find new beginnings after loss.

Download or read book Privilege written by Mary Adkins and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beloved author of When You Read This, a smart, sharply observed novel about gender and class on a contemporary Southern college campus in the spirit of The Female Persuasion and Prep. Carter University: “The Harvard of the South.” Annie Stoddard was the smartest girl in her small public high school in Georgia, but now that she’s at Carter, it feels like she’s got “Scholarship Student” written on her forehead. Bea Powers put aside misgivings about attending college in the South as a biracial student to take part in Carter’s Justice Scholars program. But even within that rarefied circle of people trying to change the world, it seems everyone has a different idea of what justice is. Stayja York goes to Carter every day, too, but she isn’t a student. She works at the Coffee Bean, doling out almond milk lattes to entitled co-eds, while trying to put out fires on the home front and save for her own education. Their three lives intersect unexpectedly when Annie accuses fourth-year student Tyler Brand of sexual assault. Once Bea is assigned as Tyler’s student advocate, the girls find themselves on opposite sides as battle lines are drawn across the picture-perfect campus—and Stayja finds herself invested in the case’s outcome, too. Told through the viewpoints of Annie, Bea, and Stayja, Privilege is a bracingly clear-eyed look at today’s campus politics, and a riveting story of three young women making their way in a world not built for them.
