Book Old Man on a Bicycle

Download or read book Old Man on a Bicycle written by Don Petterson and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Don Petterson, a former American ambassador, told family and friends he intended to ride a bicycle from New Hampshire to San Francisco, most of them questioned his judgment, if not his sanity. He was in his seventies, hadn't been on a bike for years, and had never ridden more than a few miles at a time. But, in May 2002, putting doubters-and self-doubt-behind him, Petterson headed west. Laboring against strong headwinds, struggling up steep hills, or coping with extreme weather, he sometimes wondered what in the world he was doing. But he kept going-the lure of riding his bike across the Golden Gate a compelling incentive. Ahead of him lay many challenges-among them, riding his loaded bike over the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada, crossing the Great Plains in brutal summer heat, dealing with the aftermath of a collision with a car, and traversing Nevada's basin and range country and the Great Salt Lake's desert. His rewards included passing through spectacular mountain forests, experiencing the aching beauty of the lonely plains, and viewing the grandeur of the West's sculpted canyons and mesas. In Old Man on a Bicycle, the author relates how he prepared for the 3,600-mile journey and what he saw and did during the two months he was on the road. In addition he rebuts the misconception that aging means debilitating decline and, drawing on certain events of his ride, offers research-based advice on how to ease the physical aspects of aging. It's an inspirational account, emphasizing the importance of exercise to physical and mental well-being.

Wadjda earns money for her dream bike by selling homemade bracelets and mixtapes of banned music to her classmates. Still, Wadjda keeps scheming, and with the bicycle so closely in her sights, she will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ride with a father and his son on an amazing journey through America's past. He had no way of knowing it was to e the autumn of his youth, and that his entire generation would soon be thrust into the most devastating conflict in history. Seven decades later, author John J. Newkirk retraces this epic ride with his father, Jack, in a silent hope the old soldier will still be proud of the America he fought for. Each mile brings discovery as the author learns of his namesake, the heroic Squadron Leader of the legendar Flying Tigers, and of his father's life on the road and in the jungles of the South Pacific during World War II. The result is quintessential Americana, a sweeping portrait of the grit, guts, ingenuity, and sacrifice that defined a nation, and a timely lesson from the Greatest Generation on how we can overcome our most pressing challenges and reclaim the American Dream.

Book excerpt: This is my fi rst attempt at writing a romantic, adventure, so give me a break here. With that being said, here we go. We’re living in an ever changing world. The American industry is down to its lowest point since the industry evolution of the late 1800’s. Tractors, T.V.s, automobiles, household wares, clothes, shoes, and thousands of other products are all being manufactured overseas by cheap labor. Manufacturing plants in the U.S. are closing or moving to foreign countries in droves. Unemployment will continue to rise. We can blame our Government or overseas labor cost, but the bottom line is the American people. We’re shooting ourselves in the foot. In the process of trying to save a buck, we buy the cheapest products without regard to its consequences. There was a time we were proud to drive and wear American made products. I can remember when the fi rst Asian motorcycles hit the streets. They can build fi ve bikes for the cost of one American machine, but the very name HARLEY DAVIDSON screams out, ‘Made in the U.S.A.!! And that fact along gives me hope that the American people can come to their senses and start demanding American products made right here in the good old U.S.A. using American labor.

Book Dormont

Download or read book Dormont written by Raymond W. Smith and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dormont Borough, incorporated in 1909, had slightly less than 10,000 citizens when I lived there in the 1950's. It had no streets, only avenues, and many of them named after the states of the union-like a Monopoly board. Its two connected business districts on Potomac and West Liberty Avenues provided tidy commercial areas that filled the needs of its citizens. I once counted 14 bars. And most prominent of all, Dormont's 26-acre park stood at the heart of the borough. It had a huge swimming pool, a number of athletic fields and many alcoves to hide in. Picnics, sports events, dances, sled riding, proms at the bathhouse, fireworks on Memorial Day (which we typically called Dormont Day) gave its citizens an extraordinarily encapsulated experience. From our point of view, Dormont Park, and, in fact, Dormont itself, was complete.

In his literary debut, Mr. Lottes reminisces about his childhood and explores the plight of men and women as they grow into adulthood. Taut, lyrical, and always running, these transient pieces reach the desolate to the lively. Some are clear-cut tales, some are back pocket-sized interludes, some are intimate dialogues between two people, and others are excerpts from a struggling actor's journal entries. All at once, FIRST PERSON LAST signifies the author's personal pipe dream of individual peace, family appeasement, emotional articulation, and release.
