Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Kingdom of Elmet, the Land 'Twixt Aire and Wharfe: A Descriptive Sketch of Its Ancient History, Antiquities, Legends, Picturesque Features, and Its Flora; Being a Companion Volume to "Lower Wharfeland" It is at the latter part of this period, known as the Post-tertiary, that the biped figure Of man appears dimly on the horizon, his arms of defence a knotted club, wrested from the trees of the tropical forest, and, peradventure, with a stone fastened by with'es at the end - probably the only rude weapon of man in the early stone age, or Paleolithic. Century after century roll past in startling numbers - how many the greatest scientist cannot tell us; climatic changes are gradually taking place, many of the larger animals become extinct, and the Almighty Ruler altering the face of Nature, in the succession of ages, more suitable for the dwelling Of man in this district. Primeval forests, seeds of our vast coal measures, are slowly, but surely, sinking; the great Eastern Plain, little by little, subsiding below water level, and gradually forming the German Ocean. Book Folklore of Yorkshire

Download or read book Folklore of Yorkshire written by Kai Roberts and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beautiful county of Yorkshire is the largest in Britain, and yet still possesses a strong and cohesive regional identity. Built on centuries of shared tradition, a characteristic body of folklore has thrived and endured well into the present day. Folklore of Yorkshire chronicles such beliefs throughout the whole county, identifying distinctive common themes, placing them in their historical context and considering their social and psychological function. You'll discover Yorkshire's holy wells and buried treasure, its boggarts, Black Dogs and fairies, and the legends behind the county's stunning landscape. This fully illustrated book shows how the customs of the past have influenced the ways of today, whilst also revealing something about the nature of folklore itself, both for the tradition-bearers and those who collect it.

Book Battles of the Dark Ages

Download or read book Battles of the Dark Ages written by Peter Marren and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2006-09-18 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at what world history might have been like if not for the fall of the Western Roman Empire. This is a fascinating exploration of how the history of Europe, and indeed the world, might have been different if the Western Roman Empire had survived the crises that pulled it apart in the fourth and fifth centuries. The author starts by showing how that survival and recovery might plausibly have happened if several relatively minor things had been different. He then moves on to discuss a series of scenarios which might have altered the course of subsequent history dramatically. Would the survival of a strong Western Empire have assisted the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire in halting the expansion of Islam in the Middle East and North Africa? How would the Western Roman Empire have handled the Viking threat? Could they even have exploited the Viking discovery of America and established successful colonies there? While necessarily speculative, all the scenarios are discussed within the framework of a deep understanding of the major driving forces, tensions, and trends that shaped European history and help to shed light upon them. In so doing they help us understand why things panned out as they did, as well as what might have been.

Download or read book Borderlands written by Phil Sidebottom and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2023-09-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period AD 450-1066 was a tumultuous time for the British Isles, and this was in particularly true of what became South Yorkshire. Existing on the borderland between the great Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria, South Yorkshire remained contentious in the struggles between the rival polities, with land ceded and taken, over the best part of four centuries. Evidence suggests that most of southern Yorkshire remained largely occupied by native British inhabitants, rather than Saxon or Viking incomers, at least until the later-Saxon period and after the Viking take-over which began in the 9th century. With a focus on the previously academically-neglected archaeology of the region, this book features new evidence to paint a full picture of South Yorkshire in the Anglo-Saxon and Viking Periods. Included are pre-Conquest charters and the enigmatic Tribal Hidage tribute list, as well as an analysis of place-names and looks at the archaeological record of dark-age earthworks, burials, fortified places and finds. The author uses his expert knowledge of Anglo-Saxon carved stone monuments to supplement the historical and archaeological evidence to identify centres of settlement and control in the area and which also offers a tantalising insight into local ethnicity. The research is brought to life with maps, figures, and photographic evidence throughout the book. In pulling together our current knowledge of South Yorkshire during this pivotal era, the book acts as a reminder of how the wealth of local character is easily destroyed unless we become more aware of its fragility and celebrate its diversity. Written in accessible language, this book will be of interest to both academics and anyone who wants to know more about South Yorkshire in the post-Roman and Early Medieval periods.
