Book Old Javanese English Dictionary

Download or read book Old Javanese English Dictionary written by Petrus Josephus Zoetmulder and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982 with total page 1260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary is based on published texts and copies from unpublished manuscripts in Old and Middle Javanese. The vocabulary is arranged in Latin alphabetical order with the base-words as entries. Meaning and usage of the entries are illustrated by quotations from the whole range of the relevant literature. These are arranged in such a way that changes in usage or minor semantic developments can be traced. The reader can then see for himself how the interpretation given, often based on the context, was reached, and whether he agrees with it. In the case of rare words, or where a question mark indicates that there is a doubt about the correctness of the interpretation, many or even all the places where these words occur are given. In other cases what may seem a profusion of examples is provided because of the insight they give into the life and culture of early Java.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With close to one-hundred million speakers, Javanese is the largest language of the Austronesian family and one of the main regional languages of Indonesia. Javanese predominates in central and eastern Java as well as in a strip along the north coast of west Java (except around Jakarta. Migrants have carried Javanese to other parts of Indonesia (Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi) and outside the country to Malaysia, New Caledonia and Suriname. Javanese speakers migrated to Malaysia mainly from 1880 to 1930 relocating in the peninsula (parts of Perak, Selangor, and Kedah) though there are also some in the province of Sabah in the northern area of Borneo. Migrant workers arrived to New Caledonia, in the Pacific, between 1900 and 1938. In Suriname, a former Dutch colony in South America, plantation workers were brought from Java between 1890-1939. Javanese is a regional language of Indonesia, but not the official one. It is losing ground to Bahasa Indonesia, a form of Malay, used as a lingua franca and promoted as the national tongue of the country. The original dictionary on which this volume is based was published in 1973 by Yale University. As stated in the introduction which follows, the Indonesian government issued a major orthography update after the Yale edition was published. It is now almost 50 years since the Yale edition was published and to my knowledge nothing has been standardized in the interim. The language has continued to evolve while at the same time being strongly influenced by the national Indonesian language and English. We have incorporated the new orthography changes into this edition and added an all-new English - Javanese index which was missing from the original. We have also added many business, computer, and internet terms which have now become common-place in the language. Many of these are loan-words from English, others are taken from Indonesian. It is our hope that this volume will become the standard for building a comprehensive Javanese -English foundation and since we now have and maintain this volume in digital format, corrections and additions can be made regularly.

Book Introduction to Old Javanese Language and Literature

Download or read book Introduction to Old Javanese Language and Literature written by Mary S. Zurbuchen and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest and most extensive written language of Southeast Asia is Old Javanese, or Kawi. It is the oldest language in terms of written records, and the most extensive in the number and variety of its texts. Javanese literature has taken many forms. At various times, prose stories, sung poetry or other metrical types, chronicles, scientific, legal, and philosophical treatises, prayers, chants, songs, and folklore were all written down. Yet relatively few texts are available in English. The unstudied texts remaining are an unexplored record of Javanese culture as well as a language still alive as a literary medium in Bali. Introduction to Old Javanese Language and Literature represents a first step toward remedying the dearth of Old Javanese texts available to English-speaking students. The ideal teaching companion, this anthology offers transliterated original texts with facing-page English translations. Theanthology focuses on prose selections, since their straightforward style and syntax offer the beginning student the most rewarding experience. Four sections make up the collection. Part I offers several short readings as the most accessible entry point into Old Javanese. Part II contains two moralistic fables from an Old Javanese retelling of the Hindu Pañcatantra cycle. Part III takes up the epic, providing excerpts from one of the books of the Old Javanese retelling of the Mahābhārata. Part IV offers excerpts from two chronicles, the generic conventions of which challenge received notions of history writing because of their supernaturalism and folkloric elements. Includes introduction, glossary, and notes.

Book Desawarnana

Download or read book Desawarnana written by Stuart Robson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is just over a century since the first manuscript of Désawarnana (also known as the Nagarakrtagama) was rescued from the sack of the palace at Cakranagara in Lombok. Once its importance for Javanese history was recognized, its place was assured: our picture of the greatness of the Javanese kingdom of Majapahit in the second half of the 14th century is based largely on the evidence of this one text, and it is true to say that this picture has formed an inspiration for modern Indonesians as well. The text is not a literary masterpiece, and it is not typical of its genre; in fact it is unique. One of the reasons for this is the fact that here and there its author, Mpu Prapanca, tells us something about himself, in particular when he accompanies his king as Superintendent of Buddhist Affairs on a long journey through the countryside of East Java in 1359.
