Ten miles east of Bloomington he crossed an Indian trail running north and south.5 South of White river, near Brownstown, he recorded another Indian road, going east and west; west perhaps to the old Delaware camp at the forks of White river. There was an army crossing at the mouth of Raccoon creek 7 the trail crossed the Wabash there and followed up the right hand or west bank of the river. This fact made the mouth Of Raccoon creek prominent enough to be a beginning point of the Harrison Purchase, s in 1809. On this ten O'clock line there was an Indian trail between what is now Dana and Hillsdale.9 Since the line ran in a southeasterly direction, the traces must have crossed it nearly at right angles, or the surveyor would not have recorded them. Probably all led toward Ft. Wayne and Vincennes.10 The survey of this line was not pleasing to Tecumseh, and he so intimated to the United States government, August 10, 1810, at Vincennes.11 He was very angry at the chiefs who touched the quill, as the Indians called signing a treaty. Certain chronicles were published in 1854 by the late Franklin B. Hough, whose name is familiar to every student of Northern New York history. Twenty-two years later the Reverend Elizur H. Pratt, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and sometime editor of the New York Evangelist, prepared a sketch of the town which he read at the celebration of the Centennial Anniversary of American Independence. These sources are the most reliable on this subject, and both have long since passed out of print and thus out of convenient reach. Careful research, however, has brought to light some new material which is now offered in combination with the old. I have, by request, published here in book form the manuscript which I prepared, as historian of the town of Cape Vincent, for the celebration of the Centennial of Jefferson County. No claim is made to completeness, but all statements are accurate and authentic, and can be verified from reliable sources. In the meantime, the town grew steadily. Its exports Of raw material and imports of manufactured goods, as shown by the meagre port records of the time, increased pretty steadily and were, at all times, greater in amount than necessary for the support of the little town, indicating that, in spite Of poor roads and bad transportation, its people were doing business with the hinterland and making Chicago, in that early day, the central market for surrounding territory. Dr. Quaife has happily selected this period for his book, and in admirable fashion has pictured the life, the travelers, and transportation methods before the coming Of the canal and the railroads; he describes an eventful period which has hereto fore had but little consideration, and has succeeded in linking the old with the new in a most interesting way.
